Nissan's popular compact SUV, the X-TRAIL, has received a significant upgrade for 2004 with the release of the Series II.

Featuring a new look interior and stylish updates to the exterior design, a revised range and extra equipment, the X-TRAIL is now even better than ever.

Since its launch in late 2001, the X-TRAIL has gone from strength-to-strength in the sales charts. In less than two years, it has taken on all competitors and now leads the compact SUV segment with 10,714 sales year-to-date 2003.

The success of the X-TRAIL comes down to its rugged styling, practical interior, gutsy 2.5-litre engine and intelligent ALL MODE 4x4 system.

X-TRAIL series II is available in ST, Ti and two Ti-L variants - Ti-L with "Nissan Rear Seat Entertainment" (NRSE) pack and Ti-L with "Sunroof pack".

All X-TRAILs now come with standard cruise control, active headrests, multi box with hot and cool functions and cooled front drink holders, rear seat armrest, three rear lap-sash seatbelts, outside temperature gauge and leather steering wheel.

This is in addition to the ST variants' already high level of appointments which includes a CD player, air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and EBD and Brake Assist, front seatbelt pretensioners, dual front airbags, 60/40 split fold rear seats, and a washable luggage board.

Higher specification X-TRAIL Ti variants receive redesigned 16" alloy wheels, climate control air conditioning, a six-stack CD player, rear spoiler, fog lamps and aluminium pedals. The Ti-L variants add power front seats with leather trim and the choice of an electric tilt slide sunroof or rear seat DVD system with 8" screen and infra red headphones.

Externally, the X-TRAIL series II has a redesigned front and rear bumper and front grille and on Ti and Ti-L variants new look fog lamps and 16" alloy wheels.

Inside, the changes to the styling and features have made the X-TRAIL even more user-friendly with a new instrument panel and a dial-in ALL MODE 4x4 system. Further improvements have been made with the addition of soft pad finishes on the dash and front door armrests, new rear cup holders and an additional driver's air vent.

All models come with a powerful 2.5-litre engine, which delivers 132kW of power at 6000rpm and maximum torque of 245Nm at 4000rpm.

This engine can be matched to either a standard five-speed manual transmission or the optional four-speed automatic.

Despite the additional features, the X-TRAIL ST and Ti pricing remains unchanged at $31,990* and $35,990* for the manual models. The highly specified manual Ti-L variants retail from $38,490* for the "Sunroof pack" and $39,990 for the "Nissan Rear Seat Entertainment pack". The optional four-speed automatic adds $2000.

According to Nissan's managing director and chief executive officer, Leon Daphne, the X-TRAIL is a superb compact SUV and the sales figures reflect this.

"Since the launch in late 2001, over 22,000 X-TRAILs have been sold," Mr Daphne said.

"We have been pleased with the success of the X-TRAIL to-date and expect the series II to lift sales even higher in 2004."

*Pricing is recommended retail and does not include dealer delivery or on-road costs.
