Production of Toyota's popular Corolla range has passed the 28 million mark.
Corolla is Toyota's biggest-seller, with annual production of just over one
million cars.
By the end of 2003 the company had reached the 28 million figure, with more
than 22 million produced in Japan and nearly six million Corollas produced in
other countries.
Corolla was first produced in 1966 and is now in its ninth generation. It is
now produced in 14 countries around the world.
Corolla is built in Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the
Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Turkey, the
United Kingdom and the United States.
Toyota offers 19 Corolla model variants in Australia - all with 1.8-litre
engines and variable valve timing.
Eighteen Corolla model variants have a 100kW VVT-i 1.8-litre engine.
The nineteenth model, 141kW Corolla Sportivo, has variable valve timing and
variable lift.
Corolla's Australian range of 19 models provides the choice of three body
styles, three transmissions and five equipment grade levels.
In addition to Corolla Sportivo, there are seven hatchback Seca models, five
sedan models and six wagon models - all with a 100kW VVT-i equipped engine.
The 100kW engine can be matched to a five-speed manual transmission or an
electronically controlled four-speed overdrive automatic.
Corolla was the first small car in Australia with a 100kW engine across the
range.
The ninth-generation Corolla range marked the return of the Corolla wagon to
Australia for the first time since 1994.
All models have versatile 60/40 split-fold rear seats.
Standard specifications across the range include 1.8 litre engine, driver's
SRS airbag, front tilt-adjustable seatbelt pretensioners with forcelimiter on
the driver's seatbelt, tilt-adjustable power steering, four-wheel disc brakes,
three rear-seat height-adjustable head restraints, power mirrors, central
locking, driver's seat height adjust and engine immobiliser.
