Overlander 4WD, Australia's longest running 4WD magazine, has announced the
winner of its 4WDOTYaward for 2003.
This year's winner is Volkswagen Touareg V8.
The testing procedure for 2003 4WDOTY was the most rigorous yet, covering
more than 3000km in a single week over all types of terrain to sort through the
five finalists. The Volkswagen Touareg beat some strong competition for the
title, namely Holden Adventra, Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Prado and BMW X5.
Overlander's 4WDOTY is decided by judging all finalists against a predefined
set of criteria, a formula that has served Overlander very well in the past. The
five criteria are Value for Money, Progressiveness of Design, Soundness of
Engineering, Fulfilment of Intended Function, and a new criterion, dubbed the
'Overlander Factor'.
Former Overlander Editor Fraser Stronach, who was part of the testing team
for 4WDOTY, said of the Touareg "It's no surprise that the V8 Touareg achieved
the highest ranking in the Progressiveness of Design criterion. It's so clever
and so capable, that every 4WD manufacturer should buy one and pull it apart to
find out what makes it tick."
The award for 4WDOTY was presented to Volkswagen on the 20th of January.
