The Toyota Fraser Island Fishing Expo is set for a record attendance in 2004.
The annual six-day event held at Orchid Beach on the north-eastern corner of
Fraser Island will this year run from May 22-28 and attract entrants who want to
fish the offshore reefs or cast a line around the island's beaches and creeks.
The twentieth anniversary event held in 2003 attracted a record crowd of
competitors and spectators and organiser Doug Bell reports registrations are
close to a sell-out for this year’s expo.
Less than 100 of the 1500 places allocated to competitors for the event
remain unclaimed.
Organisers have set a total prize pool of over $200,000 for the 2004 Toyota
Fraser Island Fishing Expo.
The big prize draw on the final night will be a highlight of the week.
First prize is a Toyota HiLux four-wheel drive 3.0 litre turbo diesel
five-speed manual single cab chassis with aluminium tray and air conditioning
valued at $35,160* and second prize a 4.75 SeeJay Haven Centre Console with
Yamaha F60 engine, valued at $21,780.*
A Toyota Echo 3-door manual hatch valued at $14,740* is third prize, bringing
the combined value of the first three prizes to over $70,000.
“The event’s popularity has a lot to do with the location, the fishing, the
additional activities organised throughout the week - and the friendships struck
up at the event,” said Mr Bell.
“We’ve noticed more families are attending the Toyota Expo each year.
“Approximately two thirds of competitors return to fish the event the
following year.”
