Toyota has extended its lead in the Queensland motor vehicle market, topping the
May registration figures by 636 vehicles.
Toyota's lead in Queensland represented two thirds of the make's national
winning margin of 948 vehicles.
Figures released by official industry statistician VFACTS show Toyota
registered 3,569 vehicles in Queensland in May, compared with Holden's 2,933.
Toyota was the only “big-four” manufacturer to post an increase over its May
2003 result.
Toyota achieved 21.8 per cent market share for the month, fuelled by strong
demand for its light cars, sports utility vehicles and light trucks.
One in three sports utility vehicles sold in Queensland in May was a Toyota,
with 1,031 SUVs sold in a total market of 3,155.
This represented a 17.6 per cent increase on Toyota's May 2003 SUV
registrations.
Toyota also claimed 28.8 per cent of the light truck market with 1,056
registrations - an increase of 12 per cent on its May 2003 results.
Toyota's year-to-date May registrations in Queensland stand at 18,185, a lead
of 4,768 vehicles over Holden and an improvement of 2,420 vehicles (15.3 per
cent) on Toyota's result for the first five months of 2003.
Top Toyota performers during May in Queensland were: Corolla (586 vehicles),
2.4-litre Camry (392), HiLux 4x2 (383), HiLux 4x4 (370), LandCruiser Prado
(363), LandCruiser 100 Series (311), RAV4 (245), workhorse LandCruiser 78 Series
(222) and Echo (212).
Toyota's senior manager - Northern Region, David Stone, said Toyota's overall
model strength was once again reflected in a strong Queensland motor vehicle
market.
“The overall market for May was up 1,542 vehicles (10.3 per cent ) on the
previous month and by 1,406 vehicles (9.3 per cent ) compared with May 2003,” he
said.
“Camry four-cylinder, the LandCruiser models and the HiLux range enjoyed good
success, and helped us make a significant contribution to Toyota's national
result.”
Toyota Corolla and four-cylinder Camry won their segments in May, with
Corolla capturing 20.7 per cent of Small Car sales and 2.4-litre Camry
increasing its hold on the Medium segment with a 54.7 per cent market share.
Toyota's hold on the SUV Medium segment was confirmed by combined
registrations of 475 new-generation LandCruiser Prado and Kluger, for a combined
46.1 per cent of the segment
King Off The Road LandCruiser 100 Series was unchallenged in SUV Large, with
56.3 per cent market share.
HiLux 4x2 topped the month in the very competitive 4x2 Pick Up/Cab Chassis
segment, achieving 21.9 percent market share.
Toyota also headed the Queensland market in May with 4WD HiLux in the 4x4
Pick-up category and HiAce Commuter bus (23 vehicles for 88.5 per cent market
share) in Light Buses.
Heartland LandCruiser 78 Series workhorse added a further 222 sales to the
May 4x4 Pick-up segment, giving Toyota a total of 592 vehicles and 39.2 per cent
of this segment.
Nationally, Toyota's market-leading range of Sports Utility Vehicles has
propelled the company to its fifth consecutive monthly sales win for 2004.
