Renault has released two variants of its third generation Renault Sport Clio 182, giving customers the option of choosing the type of driving experience they want from their sports hatch.

The regular Renault Sport Clio 182 offers the well recognized traits found on the previous generation Renault Sport Clio: dynamic performance and tenacious handling and grip.

For customers demanding an even more sporty experience, Renault has also added an additional variant to the range, the Renault Sport Clio 182 Cup.

Utilising the same drivetrain as the regular Renault Sport Clio 182, the Cup offers a firmer suspension set-up and lowered ride height to give improved grip and greater driving precision.

The only external differentiation between the regular Renault Sport Clio 182 and Cup are the charcoal-coloured alloy wheels.

Thanks to the revisions to the engine, the new Renault Sport Clio 182 produces 131kW of power – an increase of 7kilowatts – and maximum torque of 200Nm is produced at 5, 250rpm - down from 5400rpm.

Improvements to the suspension, steering and increases to the front and rear track width have improved the handling and ride comfort of the Renault Sport Clio 182.

Cruise control with a speed limiter function is now standard on the vehicle and allows the driver to maintain a constant cruising speed or to program a maximum speed.

Exterior changes to the Renault Sport Clio 182 are subtle but help reinforce the sporting intent of this popular compact performance hatch.

The most distinctive of the exterior changes are the twin chromed exhaust pipes and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the safety belts have grey-coloured facings to match the underlayer of the perforated alcantara upholstery. The sporting and technical signature of Renault Sport Clio 182 is seen in the leather steering wheel, the instruments with their chromed bezels, the dashboard trim mouldings and door bins with their “soft aluminium” paint finish. The door sill kickplates with their Renault Sport badges, and the aluminium pedals complete this sporting finish.

The Renault Sport Clio 182s have a long list of standard specifications including aluminium drilled pedals, six-speaker AM/FM stereo with in-dash CD, climate controlled air-conditioning, automatic Xenon headlights and rain-sensing front wipers.

Renault’s world renowned passive and active safety standards are prominent in the Renault Sport Clio 182. Both models come equipped with ABS braking with EBD electronic brake distribution control, ESP electronic stability control, adaptive driver and front passenger front SRS airbags, driver and front passenger side SRS airbags, front and outboard rear seat belt pretensioners with load limiters, front and rear anti-roll bars and anti-intrusion bars fitted as standard.

The Renault Sport Clio 182 was upgraded as part of the Clio Generation 3 program. Costs for the program amounted to $ 31.7 million (AUD 81.3 million), of which $ 7.2 million (AUD 18.5 million) was for the new Renault Sport version. The evolution of the Renault Sport Clio 182 2.0 16V required $ 5.3 million (AUD 13.6 million) for development and $ 1.9 million (AUD 4.9 million) for industrial investment.

The Renault Sport Clio 182 is priced from $32,990*, while the Renault Sport Clio 182 Cup is priced at $34,490** - metallic paint is a $600 option on the regular Renault Sport Clio 182.

According to Renault Australia’s managing director, Rudi Koenig, the Renault Sport Clio 182 is not only a much more dynamic and enjoyable car to drive but is even better value than ever.

“The Renault Sport Clio 182 will appeal to enthusiasts who demand a highly responsive and entertaining driving experience,” Mr Koenig said.

“And now, with the option of the Renault Sport Clio 182 Cup we have a car to satisfy the most demanding motor sport enthusiasts.”

Renault Sport Clio 182 – improved handling, response and performance

The Renault Sport Clio 182 2.0 16V engine proclaims its sporting character through its clean and eager note when accelerating hard. With 131kW (182bhp) at 6,500rpm (up from 124kW in the previous model), the performance of the Renault Sport Clio 182 is higher, with acceleration from 0 to 100kph taking only 7.1sec. The maximum torque of 200Nm is now achieved at 5,250rpm (150rpm earlier than before) and 80% of this is available from 2,000rpm to provide vigorous response and real pleasure of driving across the speed range.

A new “3Y” exhaust manifold (replacing the former “4-into-1”) improves gas outflow and allows better cylinder filling to enhance output. The greater duct length of this exhaust manifold results in higher torque at all speeds.

The 2.0 16V is equipped with a metallic catalyst, a technology making its first appearance in the Renault range. More compact and with thinner internal walls, this catalyst provides the same active exchange surface as in the preceding unit but with less resistance to through-flow. At its exit, two parallel-mounted silencers also reduce back-pressure while achieving a distinctly sporting exhaust note.

The smoothness of the power curve is achieved through new calibration of the fuel injection together with that of the inlet camshaft variator.

The chassis combines precision of control with progressiveness and consistency. The new, more reactive chassis makes Renault Sport Clio 182 more fun, while work carried out on the suspension has resulted in better comfort.

The wheelbase has been increased by 13mm (2,485mm instead of 2,472mm for the previous version); the track has been widened by 12mm at the front and by 16mm at the rear. These changes have resulted in greater stability and improved cornering grip.

The traction and steering feel provided by the front suspension have been improved by increasing the castor angle from a nominal value of 1 5. The increased spring stiffness (+10%) favours the operation of the suspension, and the precision of front-end positioning, with a high quality of information feedback.

The connection between the wheel hub carrier and the suspension arm of the rear suspension has been strengthened. Resistance to transverse loading has been increased by 15%, ensuring that the wheels run true despite being subjected to high loads. The rear mountings are also stiffer and contribute to consistency of behaviour.

The 24mm rear anti-roll bar (against 22mm previously) provides 12% greater stiffness. The distribution of anti-roll effect has been revised to improve the rear suspension movement.

To exploit the full potential of this new chassis, the Renault Sport Clio 182 is the first car to be equipped with the new Michelin Exalto tyre. Developed by Renault Sport and Michelin working in partnership these tyres are faster-reacting and stiffer, and provide maximum precision for sporting driving.

The new Exalto tyre concentrates the rubber towards the outside of the tread providing better cornering grip. The distribution of ground contact pressure is improved when running straight as well as when cornering. Control when running on wet surfaces is also ensured through the use of a rubber mix developed from competition technology.

An even more exclusive offer: the Cup with sports chassis

Dedicated to the driving process and to efficiency, the Renault Sport Clio 182 Cup provides a level of grip sufficient to satisfy the most demanding motor sport enthusiasts. With stiffened suspension and lowered ride height, control of body movement is optimal. This development combines existing comfort with a radically sporting character.

The front wheel hub carriers, specific to the Cup, are equipped with larger diameter bearings. The rigorous maintenance of the wheel in its correct plane, when subjected to cornering forces as well as during acceleration and braking, and the traction provided by this strengthened suspension, were the object of special attention.

The steering arm attachment points on the wheel hub carriers have been positioned lower. This adjustment to the suspension favours reactiveness and quicker steering response. Spring rates increased by 20% with matching damper settings for this version provide even more incisive behaviour.

The rear spring rates have been stiffened by 15% and the damper settings increased by 10%.

Outside, the Renault Sport Clio 182 Cup is distinguished by the fitting of charcoal-coloured alloy wheels.
