- 210 BHP/155 kW power peak for MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works Tuning Kit
- 0-100km/h in just 6.6 seconds
- Suits MINI Cooper S hard-top and Cabrio models
- John Cooper Works wheel, suspension and interior trim programme
MINI muscles its way deeper into the high-performance market with the
unveiling of the new, improved 210 BHP / 155 kW John Cooper Works Tuning Kit.
In the true tradition of John Cooper Works, the factory’s approved tuning
associate company has refined its go-faster package for MINI Cooper S,
delivering a more satisfying hot-shot road-rocket armed with blistering
off-the-line pace and sling-shot in-gear flexibility.
The 2005 MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works Tuning Kit zaps its way to 100
km/h in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 230km/h. In-gear elasticity has
also improved with the 80-120 km/h overtaking rush completed in just 5.4
seconds, the improvement augmented by the revised ratios of the six-speed manual
Getrag gearbox instituted for the 2005 Model Update.
The kit can be optioned for both MINI Cooper S hard-top models and the just
revealed MINI Cooper S Cabrio, which makes its Australian debut at the Motor
Show in Sydney on 7 October, 2004.
There is no Australian-market four-seater Cabrio priced under $100,000 that
can match the 7.2-second 0-100 km/h performance of the MINI Cooper S Cabrio. The
John Cooper Works Tuning Kit extends this gap still further with its 6.6-second
0-100 km/h supercar-like performance.
The first supplies of the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit are expected in
Australia late in 2004.
In just 18 months since the original kit’s introduction, over 6,000 MINI
Cooper S drivers worldwide have selected the sportier performance offered by the
John Cooper Works Tuning Kit.
For 2005, the MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works drivers’ smile-per-mile meter
revs off the scale thanks to a revised air filter system. This allows a greater
airflow at high revs (above 4,500 rpm) by triggering an extra air intake flap to
reduce pressure losses within the intake system.
New fuel injectors and engine management calibration are also required to
ensure optimum performance and durability under all operating conditions.
Customers will be delighted to know pricing for the more powerful John Cooper
Works 155 kW Tuning Kit in Australia will remain below $10,000, which includes
fitting only at authorised MINI Garages.
The modular nature of the Tuning Kit means that the almost 150 Australian
John Cooper Works customers who have optioned the original 147 kW Tuning Kit
since last July will be able to purchase an up-grade kit to bring their cars to
155 kW specification.
In addition, owners of the pre-Model Update 120 kW MINI Cooper S will be able
to specify the 155 kW Tuning Kit as well.
Mike Cooper, Managing Director of John Cooper Works commented on the dynamic
performance improvements:
“While it equates to only a small increase on paper, it feels like a
considerably bigger hike. With the improved feel, throttle response and sound
quality, we’re delighted with the results and can’t wait to pass the benefits
onto our customers.”
Both the new Tuning Kit and upgrade to existing owners’ cars are fully
approved by MINI, which means that the new vehicle warranty remains unaffected.
Every component of the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit is the result of years of
development work and innumerable road tests. The gutsy performance and
first-class handling are testament to 150,000 road miles (240,000 km) of
durability testing and 20,000 miles (32,000 km) of high-speed testing undertaken
by experienced and exacting engineers. The John Cooper Works Tuning Kit has been
put through its paces in 35-degree heat and a freezing minus 20 degrees.

New John Cooper Works Accessories
- Coil Springs
- Engine Bay Cross-Brace
- Brake Package
- 18-inch Wheel Option
- Carbon Fibre Spoiler
- Carbon Fibre Dash
- John Cooper Works Racing Seats
New John Cooper Works sports suspension uses specially developed components
for outstanding road-holding, including short and stiff body-lowering coil
springs to allow for even faster cornering, without compromising safety.
A new cross-brace for the engine compartment adds stability by reducing body
vibration.
A first class sports brakes system combines larger brake discs and massive
brake callipers at the front with special brake pad linings on the rear axle.
The braking system is a genuine racing tool – just like the 18-inch
star-spoke R95 light alloy wheels.
All accessories have been developed jointly by Mike Cooper’s specialists and
MINI engineers.
In order to generate an even sportier appearance, a new carbon fibre rear
spoiler, tailgate handle and exterior wing mirror covers will be added to the
list of available exterior accessories.
On the inside, for drivers requiring an authentic racing feel, a new carbon
fibre dash panel can be teamed with John Cooper Works Sports Seats.
The sports brake system, cross brace and carbon fibre trim are due for launch
early in 2005.
