A hard-to-miss hot hatch showcar - Torana TT36 - headlines an extensive
display of recently released and debut performers from Holden and Holden Special
Vehicles at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.
The twin turbo Alloytec V6-powered Torana TT36 concept is a stunning
spiritual successor to Holden's Bathurst-dominating 70s icon, the Torana A9X.
Right alongside is Project Marilyn, a convertible Monaro engineering
study, revealed to the media earlier this year and making its first public
appearance.
The well-received new generation AH Astra makes its Australian debut
with a trio of available models. A limited edition version of the country's
top-selling convertible, the TS Astra 'Linea Rossa' takes its first
public bow.
Holden's latest VZ model range is well to the fore. It includes the sporty
new 190kW ESP-equipped Commodore SV6 and sports luxury Calais, and
the 260 kilowatt twin-scooped, twin big bore exhaust CV8 Monaro in
exclusive Turismo blue.
A detailed Alloytec V6 engine display outlines highlights of Holden's
new six-cylinder powerplants. V8 enthusiasts can check out the performance hero
Commodore SS and sports luxury flagship WL Caprice.
The Holden light commercial and all wheel drive ranges are represented by the
hero model VZ
SS Ute, the LT Rodeo Crew Cab, Adventra LX8 and Crewman Cross 8. Completing
the line-up are Vectra, Zafira, Barina and an HBD-enhanced Holden Cruze.
Holden Special Vehicles presents its hot-off-the-press, smartly styled
new Z Series range and a super high-performance racetrack special, the GTS/R.
All Z Series HSV models, represented at the show by the Club Sport and Maloo
R8 Ute, are powered by GM's all-new, premier performance LS2 6.0 litre V8
engine. The GTS/R coupe, its 6.0 litre engine modified to produce 335kW of power
and 605Nm of torque, is intended for a range of racetrack projects. Also
displayed are the all-paw HSV Coupe 4 and Avalanche XUV models.
The retro-cool Holden designed and V8-powered Elfin Streamliner MS8, a
big attraction at the Melbourne Motor Show, makes its first trip to Sydney.
Torana TT 36 Concept Holden drew on GM global resources to build
the Torana TT36 showcar, which is powered by an experimental 280kW twin turbo
Alloytec V6 engine, sports a glass roof and showcases directional design themes.
Not for production, this mid-sized hatch concept is intended to demonstrate
to a worldwide audience the strength and versatility of Holden's design talent
and emphasise its ability to react swiftly to meet changing market demands. It
also points up Holden's rear wheel drive powertrain engineering know-how and the
practical benefits of global component sharing.
The 'Project Marilyn' convertible Monaro is an engineering study built
to evaluate the possibility of a convertible coupe based on Holden's current
V-car platform. Although production costs prevented this good looker from
hitting the streets, 'Marilyn' provided Holden with valuable information on
future model feasibility.
AH Astra - buyers at the premium end of the small car market will
appreciate the opportunity to check out a stylish new-generation, larger version
of the perennially popular Holden Astra. It offers more Euro-style refinement
and rewarding driving dynamics. All three available models are on display - AH
Astra CD, CDX and the top-spec CDXi.
In addition, the limited edition Astra 'Linea Rossa' Convertible
offers plenty of individual appeal with a striking red-on-red colour combination
and unique additional features for little extra cost - among them Magma Red
exterior finish, red and black leather trim, 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and
Rear Park Assist.
The Elfin Streamliner MS8 is a 2004 interpretation of a 1950s-style Le
Mans roadster. It blends Holden design expertise and V8 powertrain muscle with
the hand-built skills of all-Australian sports car marque, Elfin.
Racing legend Peter Brock will join current Holden V8 Supercar drivers from
the Holden Racing Team, Kmart Racing, Garry Rogers Motorsport, Paul Weel Racing
and Castrol Perkins Motorsport to meet fans at various times throughout the
show.
Visitors can view personalised features and complete details of the Holden
vehicle range on computer work stations and access an interactive brochure for
the new AH Astra. Using linked Xbox consoles, they can also test their virtual
driving skills against multiple players.
Holden personnel representing a range of departments will assist in manning
the stand and will be available to share their product knowledge.
The Australian International Motor Show 2004 is at the Sydney Convention
Centre, Darling Harbour. It runs from Thursday 7 October to Sunday 17 October.
