Gaydon, Warwickshire, 6 December 2004 - Land Rover's all-new Discovery 3 scooped
its third accolade of 2004 at the recent Top Gear awards, hosted by Jeremy
Clarkson at Soho's Groucho Club.
The all-new Discovery 3 won the 'Best SUV' award for 2004 following a
group-test win in the latest issue of Top Gear magazine over the BMW X5 and
Toyota Land Cruiser. The magazine's road testers described the Discovery 3 as
'possibly the best SUV ever'.
Also commended in the awards issue of Top Gear magazine are a collection of
'men of the year', amongst whom are the creators of the Discovery 3 - Land
Rover's design team.
Headed up by design director Geoff Upex, Land Rover designers Dave Saddington
(chief platform designer, Discovery 3), Richard Woolley (chief platform
designer, Range Rover Sport) and Andy Wheel (principal designer and man behind
the famous first sketch of the Discovery 3) were characterised as: 'The
Revolutionaries'. The magazine went on to say, "the Discovery 3 shows that icons
can be reinvented. They have done it before with Range Rover, and will do it
again with the Range Rover Sport. Make no mistake. These boys are onto
something."
Land Rover managing director, Matthew Taylor added: "As the widest read,
viewed and listened to opinions in the motor industry, it truly is praise indeed
to be awarded by the people at Top Gear. We are thrilled and delighted to be
recognised as 'onto something'."
