Australian market leader Toyota has announced a recommended retail price
reduction on all its imported passenger cars effective from January 1, 2005.
The key factor contributing to the price change has been the reduction of
tariffs from 15 per cent to 10 per cent on a wholesale level on imported
vehicles effective from 1 January. Toyota has passed on the bulk of this benefit
by applying a 3.5 per cent weighted average RRP reduction, with the difference
consisting of, among other things, the local costs associated with model
specifications.
The reductions move the recommended retail prices* for entry level Toyota
Corolla under $20,000 and Toyota Echo under $14,500.
Reductions on some models such as Tarago Ultima amount to more than $2,000.
Toyota vehicles with reduced recommended retail prices are market leading
Echo and Corolla, Celica and MR2 sports cars, Tarago and Avensis people movers,
and the petrol-electric hybrid Prius.
Toyota’s executive director of sales and marketing (Dave Buttner) said the
move reflected the carmaker’s desire to maintain the best value for money at all
times.
“Competitive trading activity in the lead up to January 1 has resulted in
customers of many brands including Toyota receiving very favourable purchase
terms," Mr Buttner said.
“Retained values should remain equitable and strong.”
Mr Buttner said the anticipated buyers’ strike in the last quarter of 2004
had not eventuated because of vigorous competitive activity.
The buoyant market was expected to continue because of price reductions
caused by tariff reduction.
“It's been said for some time that there has never been a better time to buy
a new car,“ Mr Buttner commented.
“In Toyota’s case that situation continues unabated into 2005.”
