New sporty GLX-R model introduced
Mitsubishi’s rugged and reliable one tonne workhorse, Triton, has just
received an upgrade, along with the release of a new sporty model designed to
capture share in one of the fastest growing segments in today’s pick up market.
The current generation Triton ute has established a solid reputation over
time as a strong, tough, dependable and stylish utility, and Mitsubishi has
built on that for the release of its most recent model upgrade.
Recognising the ever increasing trend of passenger car replacement with pick
ups, ABS with EBD is now available throughout the range – it is standard on the
top-of-the-line GLS Double Cab and the newly introduced GLX-R models, and is
optional on the GLX. This change follows on from the styling changes made to the
front of the vehicle late last year to bring the look of the vehicle into line
with Mitsubishi’s new global styling.
However, the big news is the introduction of a new, sporty GLX-R model. This
model has been particularly developed to capture the imagination of consumers
that want a reliable workhorse during the week, and a stylish “weekend warrior”
for a night out on the town, or to go bush with a group of mates.
Based on the proven GLX model, the GLX-R has the following additional
external styling features:
- Unique body coloured sports grille with black mesh insert, and floating
three diamond symbol,
- Body coloured front and rear bumpers,
- Body coloured fender flares,
- A chrome nudge bar with “bash” plate,
- A chrome sports bar,
- Soft tonneau with “GLX-R” logo,
- Unique 16” X 7” alloy rims,
- Side steps,
- Privacy glass (from March 2005 production)
- Unique “GLX-R” badging.
Inside, the GLX-R has the following additional features over standard GLX
models:
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel,
- Leather-wrapped gear shift knob and transfer lever,
- Titanium look instrument panel and air vent surrounds,
- Full floor console,
- Full floor carpets,
- Unique sports seat trim,
- Driver and passenger air bags.
Power is provided by either the proven 3.0 litre SOHC electronically injected
24-valve V6 petrol, or the gutsy 2.8 litre intercooled and turbocharged diesel
engine. The petrol engine delivers 133kW of power at 5250 rpm and 255Nm of
torque at 4500rpm, while the diesel delivers 92kW of power at 4000rpm and 294Nm
of torque at a low 2000 rpm.
The standard transmission for both petrol and diesel models is a five-speed,
fully synchronised manual transmission, while four-speed automatic is optional
on the petrol model.
Drive is put to the ground through Mitsubishi’s ‘Easy Select’ part-time
four-wheel drive system that enables the engagement of 4WD from the driver’s
seat. The engagement and disengagement of 4WD (between 2H to 4H) can be made on
the fly at speeds up to 100 km/hour. To engage Low range it is simply a matter
of stopping the vehicle to shift from 4H to 4L.
Triton is a reliable performer that can handle the most rugged jobs thrown at
it. This is due, in part, to its strong ladder frame, with large side members
that increase torsional rigidity for improved safety and durability. When the
front double wishbone and rear rigid elliptic leaf spring suspension is added,
Triton is built to carry everything a tradesperson, farmer, or council worker
might reasonably expect to carry. The GLS and sporty GLX-R variants are ideal
for carrying the camping gear and esky on a weekend away, or for just looking
the part when cruising.
Braking is provided by ventilated discs with single piston calipers in the
front, and drums with leading and trailing shoes in the rear with a load sensing
proportioning valve. ABS is standard on the top-of-the-line GLS and the newly
introduced sporty GLX-R models, and is optional on the GLX V6 and TDi models.
The Triton colour range now includes one new colour for the GLX-R model in
Gunmetal. In keeping with the sporty theme of GLX-R this colour is exclusive to
GLX-R. The complete range is as follows:
- Cool Silver, #
- Warm Silver,
- Deep Green,
- Red,
- Deep Blue,
- White, #
- Black, #
- Gunmetal, #
- Deep Purple / Warm Silver,
- Black / Warm Silver,
- Deep Blue / Warm Silver
# colours for new, sporty GLX-R.
Prices for Triton are unchanged, and range from $18,990 for the 2WD GL 2.4
litre petrol engine to $44,990 for the 4WD intercooled turbocharged diesel GLS.
Prices for the newly introduced GLX-R are:
- 3.0 litre V6 petrol, 5 m/t
|
$36,990 |
- 3.0 litre V6 petrol, 4 a/t
|
$38,990
[available from July 2005] |
- 2.8 litre i/c diesel, 5 m/t
|

To kick start the launch of the new GLX-R model, air conditioning will be
fitted to all GLX-R models sold in April through June 2005 at no extra charge.
This sees this already extremely attractive package become quite simply the most
outstanding 4WD double cab pick up, in value for money terms, on the Australian
market today.
The specification changes made to the range and the introduction of the
sporty GLX-R model have made the tough Triton even more attractive to people
looking for a reliable good-looking one-tonne ute.
