2. Most successful 7 Series yet is now even better
- Best selling car in its class in Germany and Australia in 2004
- More powerful engines are incredibly frugal
- More ability to specify factory chassis set-up for sporting drivers
The E65/E66 7 Series is the most successful luxury performance car built by
BMW and one of the best-driving luxury cars available.
Almost 160,000 have been delivered to customers since 2001, eclipsing the
previous benchmark E38 7 Series with 8 percent more sales over the same
timeframe.
In Australia last year the BMW 7 Series was the best selling luxury car in
its class, with 311 sales, according to VFACTS industry figures.
Central to the changes to the 2005 7 Series are new, more powerful V8 engines
and associated chassis updates to make the car even more dynamic and deliver
even more precise on-road handling, building on the existing benchmark for
luxury cars of this type.
However, in line with BMW philosophy, increasing power does not come at the
cost of substantially increased fuel consumption. In fact the new 750i/Li uses
exactly the same 11.4-litres per 100 km as the previous 745i/Li and the new
740i/Li uses only 100 ml more fuel than the previous 735i/Li at 11.2-litres per
100 km.
The creamy-smooth muscular V12 engine in the 760i/Li remains one of the
world's most advanced units available in a production vehicle.
As before, a six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is standard on
all models.
All engines excel through their high output per litre, wide useful speed
range, "beefy" torque curve and of course excellent running refinement.
As before, the Australian market 7 Series range is focused on two V8 and one
V12 petrol engines all of which feature advanced variable valve control through
VALVETRONIC.
In all, five models will be available - the 4.0-litre 740i and 740Li and the
4.8-litre 750i and 750Li and the range-topping V12-powered 760Li. In addition,
both the 740i and 750i are available with Sport Packages that deliver even more
focussed driving performance.
The 740i/Li gains an 11 per cent increase in capacity, 13 percent increase in
power and 8 percent increase in torque as output rises by 25 kW to 225 kW at
6,300 rpm, and 390 Nm of peak torque at a modest 3,500 rpm.
The 740i sprints to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds (6.9 seconds 740Li), 0.7
seconds faster than before.
The 750i/Li appears for the first time in the E65 standard wheelbase and E66
long-wheelbase 7 Series. Previously, the 750i badge was reserved for the
muscular V12 powerplant.
This badge now applies to the new 4.8-litre V8 in the 750i/Li, a capacity
increase from 4.4-litres in the previous 745i/Li.
The 4.8-litre V8 delivers 270 kW of power at 6,300 rpm and 490 Nm of torque
at 3,400 rpm, a rise of 25 kW in power (+10 percent) and 40 Nm in torque (+9
percent).
The 750i accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds (6.0 seconds 750Li), 0.4
seconds faster than the 745i.
The 6.0-litre V12 engine continues unchanged in the 2005 7 Series, and
continues to deliver top performance with 327 kW of power at 6,000 rpm and a
mountainous 600 Nm of torque at 3,950 rpm, giving the 760Li a 0-100 km/h time of
just 5.6 seconds.
The chassis and suspension of the BMW 7 Series has now been updated and
enhanced to an even higher standard. A 14 mm increase in rear track and enhanced
axle control and response exert a positive influence on the car's driving
dynamics.
Australian buyers can customise their chassis set-up at the factory through
the availability of two advanced technical solutions - Adaptive Drive and Sports
Package.
Adaptive Drive suspension now combines Dynamic Drive with BMW's EDC-C
continuously adjustable damper control system, thus offering an unprecedented
synthesis of supreme driving dynamics and maximum comfort on the road.
Dynamic Drive almost completely eliminates body roll in bends and once again
improves the car's steering behaviour on the road through the use of fully
variable anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles.
EDC-C, in turn, consistently adjusts damper characteristics to changing road,
load and driving conditions, ranging from very comfortable to sporting and firm.
The Sports Package for standard wheelbase models only, delivers BMW's Sports
Suspension and now adds Dynamic Drive. Cars fitted with Sports Suspension ride
20 mm lower at the front and 10 mm lower at the rear.
Cosmetic enhancements make the new 7 Series even more stylish, purposeful and
luxurious. Subtle refinement in exterior design highlight the car's enhanced
driving dynamics and sporting performance.
From the front or side profile, the elegant, sporting 7 Series looks more
athletic. Striking new contours for the bonnet’s more prominent power dome taper
from the A-pillars to the kidney grille, to give the front end a particularly
powerful look.
At the rear, a more lavish look arrives thanks to a slim chrome strip linking
the new-look, larger taillight clusters with their jewelled look.
The re-profiled boot lid further helps redefine the visual appeal of the rear
of the car for a fuller road presence.
Overall, the BMW 7 Series combines outstanding driving pleasure and
sportscar-like performance with generous amounts of space and the highest
possible standards of comfort and safety. The car is, quite simply, the leader
in technology in its segment with enhanced iDrive and the availability of
ConnectedDrive.
3. Subtle refinements freshen an outstanding design
- Enhanced powerdome announces more powerful V8 engines
- Wider track spells sportier stance
- New front and rear facias sharpen appearance
- Interior trim revised for more contemporary feel
- iDrive updated and easier to use
Power and elegance form the bedrock of the 7 Series’ design language.
The exterior of the 7 Series has been discreetly yet effectively refined.
New, bolder headlamps give a more athletic feel, accentuated by the enhanced
powerdome and the more steeply rising bonnet. The swept V-design for the nose of
the car helps to give the entire front end a more dynamic, muscular look.
The famous trademark kidney grilles are enlarged as if to reflect the deeper
breathing required by the more powerful engines.
The rear is characterised by clearer contours, the new chrome trim strip,
enlarged taillights and a redesigned air dam and under bumper valance.
Re-profiled side sills boast a light contour line below the door openings
that make the car appear to hug the road more closely. This impression is
enhanced by new bumpers, re-profiled at the side to show off the tyres.
The 14 mm wider rear track assists this pugnacious stance still further.
Inside, the long-wheelbase Li models deliver almost Airline First Class
levels of lounging room, with plenty of legroom and knee room.
Effective legroom at the rear measures almost a metre so passengers can
stretch out in comfort, and thanks to the electrical sunblind for the rear
window, in complete privacy. All long wheelbase models boast side and rear
sunblinds.
The feeling of luxurious space inside the 7 Series has been further enhanced
thanks to new trim strips and panels accentuating the horizontal and vertical
lines of the dashboard.
The function bars and fresh air outlets are finished in special structured
soft paint now presented in a lighter colour. The rotary knobs for the lights
and air conditioning feature a bracket in high-quality pearl gloss chrome.
Dashboard controls and instruments are grouped by function in BMW’s typical
“insular design” and the buttons or rotary knobs are colour coded to contrast
elegantly with that of the trim panels.
Nasca leather upholstery with Ash fine wood trim in high gloss is now
standard, replacing Black Cherry light or dark wood trim. American Walnut with a
matt finish is a no cost option.
The iDrive Controller has also been updated, with a new shape complete with
circumference contours and a leather insert for the upper panel.
The Menu button and a driver programmable button are located behind the
iDrive Controller, adding yet more user-friendly features. The CD Changer
located in the dash ahead of the front passenger is compatible with MP3 audio
files.
The multi-function three spoke sports steering wheel is standard on all 7
Series cars, and contains entertainment and communication/voice function buttons
and buttons for cycling between transmission modes (Drive, Sport, Manual). Metal
tabs on the wheel rim and behind the boss allow manual up and down changes in
manual mode.
Rear seat passengers in the 750Li and 760Li will be able to watch films
played by a boot-mounted DVD changer on a fold out centre console mounted
monitor. This is available as an option on other models.
The range-topping 760Li gains Comfort Access as standard equipment,
Individual paintwork, upholstery, trim, and 20-inch M light alloy wheels.
4. BMW 7 Series: More power for more enjoyment
- More capacity, more power, faster acceleration
- Fuel consumption barely changed compared with previous engines
- All engines comply with EU IV emissions requirements
BMW's V8 engines are renowned for their power, refinement and exceptional
fuel economy, and this is further enhanced for the 2005 BMW 7 Series range.
V8 power is selected by 65 percent of 7 Series customers across the world
where the choice also includes powerful, frugal and low emission six cylinder
petrol engines as well as a range of turbo-diesel options.
For the new 740i/Li, the engine has been increased in capacity from
3.6-litres to 4.0-litres, and for the 750i/Li from 4.4-litres to 4.8-litres.
VALVETRONIC variable valve control and double-VANOS variable camshaft control
make the BMW V8 engines the most progressive in their class.
With BMW’s VALVETRONIC fully variable valve drive, engine output is no longer
controlled by the throttle butterfly, but rather by the valve opening period.
The main advantage for the driver is a significant decrease in fuel consumption
and emissions, VALVETRONIC reducing fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent
especially under part load – the most typical of driving conditions.
Complementing the valve opening periods controlled and masterminded by
VALVETRONIC, double-VANOS controls the individual intake and outlet phases with
maximum precision and fully variable flexibility. The benefit is "beefier”
torque available at low engine speeds and extra power at high speeds.
For the 740i/Li, engine output rises from 200 kW to 225 kW and from 245 kW to
270 kW on the 750i/Li. Despite this increase in engine power, fuel consumption
on the 750i/Li remains unchanged.
The 740i/Li develops 225 kW of power at 6,300rpm and 390 Nm of torque at
3,500 rpm. The 740i goes from 0-100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds (6.9 seconds
740Li).
The 750i/Li develops 270 kW of power at 6,300 rpm and 490 Nm of torque at
3,400 rpm, powering the car to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds (6.0 seconds 750Li).
The highly innovative V12 engine in the 760Li is the first in the range with
direct petrol injection in addition to VALVETRONIC and double-VANOS.
The engine offers a unique balance of power, dynamism, fuel economy and low
emissions. The V12 develops 327 kW of power at 6,000 rpm and a mountainous 600
Nm of torque at 3,950 rpm. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and is
electronically governed to a top speed of 250 km/h.

5. BMW 7 Series: Sharper, sportier handling with no loss of comfort
- Alloy suspension refined for greater responsiveness
- Comfort: Adaptive Drive available with continuously adjustable EDC-C
Electronic Damper Control and body-roll reducing Dynamic Drive
- Agility: Sports Suspension for even more car control at high speed
To maximise the benefits of the powerful V8 and V12 engines under the bonnet
of the 7 Series, the entire suspension and brake callipers are made from
weight-saving aluminium.
This highlights BMW’s policy of adopting intelligent lightweight technology
to deliver customer benefits and driving agility.
The purposeful stance of the 7 Series is enhanced by the 14 mm wider rear
track that give greater emphasis to the car's sporting and elegant looks.
The standard suspension settings for the 7 Series are already extremely well
matched to the car’s role as a luxury limousine, but for customers who want to
get the most from their driving experience, there is the choice of two optional
suspension packages: Adaptive Drive featuring BMW Dynamic Drive and EDC-C
Electronic Damper Control and the Sports Package with BMW's Sport Suspension and
now with Dynamic Drive also.
Adaptive Drive is a comfort-oriented suspension package comprising Dynamic
Drive and EDC-C Electronic Damper Control, that allows the driver to switch
between Comfort and Sport on the move, offering a combination of driving
dynamics and motoring comfort unique in this class.
Available as an option on the 740i and 740Li, but standard on other models,
Adaptive Drive can be enhanced by optional self-levelling on the rear axle
(standard on the long-wheelbase models) for a consistently high level of driving
stability regardless of the load the BMW 7 Series is currently carrying.
Adaptive Drive is an ideal choice for the driver seeking supreme comfort in
every situation.
The Adaptive Drive suspension package is standard on 750i and adds
self-levelling suspension on 750Li.
A Sports Package is also available as an option on the standard wheelbase
740i and 750i models, comprising BMW's Sports Suspension. This now adds Dynamic
Drive to the mix, but eschews Electronic Damper Control, reflecting the sporting
flavour of the package.
The 740i Sport and 750i Sport ride 20 mm lower at the front and 10 mm lower
at the rear and are fitted with 19-inch light alloy wheels, with the option of
moving up to a 20-inch rim.
Harder springs and firmer dampers ensure a more resistant, extra-taut
suspension set-up for the driver seeking enhanced cornering ability.
The steering is thus more responsive and directional stability is enhanced,
while the driver enjoys even more road feel.
To complete the Sports Package, the enthusiastic 7 Series driver gains Sports
seats on 740i, in Pearl Leather, while interior trim is Vavona matt wood . The
750i Sport retains the highly adjustable Comfort Seats in Nasca Leather from the
standard 750i, with Club Leather an option. Both Sport models feature high-gloss
Satin Chrome finishes.
Dynamic Drive is the highly acclaimed BMW active chassis control system that
provides high-tech stability by reducing body roll in bends. Passenger comfort
is increased, directional stability improved and understeer reduced.
A further benefit is the reduction of low-frequency vibrations from minor
road irregularities, keeping the cabin quieter.
EDC-C Electronic Damper Control continually and automatically adjusts the
damper control settings (C stands for ‘continuous’) as a result of changing
road, load and driving conditions.
EDC-C switches from a supple, comfort-oriented set-up to a firmer, more
dynamic setting, thus offering the passengers optimum suspension comfort without
the driver having to intervene. At the same time the driver can consciously opt
for sporting damper settings by choosing the Sports set-up in the iDrive menu.

BMW's iDrive control concept, introduced in 2001, opened a new, trendsetting
development in driver orientation and vehicle control. For 2005 the iDrive
system has been revised and updated.
iDrive enables the driver to control many different functions, updated with
more advanced logic.
Many of the frequently required functions are controlled via buttons on the
multi-function steering wheel, which give direct access to audio and
entertainment functions.
Functions adjusted less often can be controlled by knobs housed in the centre
console.
Most other functions are activated through the iDrive Controller on the
centre console for intuitive operation in a precise dialogue with the Control
Display in the upper middle section of the instrument panel.
BMW's innovative iDrive system has been widely copied and still further
competitors are poised to follow in the future. Clearly, this proves the
benefits of this concept and underlines BMW's pioneering role in ergonomic
development.
The driving force behind BMW’s iDrive control system is to reduce the
potential for distraction by the driver. It takes a short time behind the wheel
to master the paths to adjust, select, activate or deactivate functions using
the iDrive Controller, tasks that can be undertaken without the drivers having
to take his or her eyes off the road.
The Controller is ideally located for easy access while the high mounted
display panel can be scanned in a second, without the driver having to move his
or her head to take in the information provided.
A voice recognition system rounds off this enhanced control system, enabling
the driver to activate more than 200 functions through their voice alone.
The most important iDrive enhancements are:
- The new Mode button on the radio operating console enables the user to
switch directly from one audio source to another (radio, CD, CD changer, DVD
changer).
- The new AM/FM button on the radio control console allows direct access for
changing frequency bands.
- Colour coding of the four main menus (with an overall range of 8 menus, as
before, ensures easier operation).
- The display colours and contrast effects have been modified for even greater
clarity.
- Subdividing the monitor into three sections with a clearer optical breakdown
and new graphics is more intuitive.
- A frame and contrasting colour makes the cursor even more clearly visible.
- "Ticks" clearly mark the functions activated.
- The direction of rotation of the Controller is shown by a circle marked with
an arrow, making it easier for the user to find various menu items.
- The new Climate Control menu and Navigation menu are easier to use.
- iDrive controller knob has leather insert, more ergonomic shape and heavier
weighting.
7. BMW 7 Series: The Logic7 Professional HiFi System
- Sensational sound reproduction on the move
The 7 Series is one of the first production cars in the world to boast the
LOGIC7 concept, previously only found in stationary professional and
semi-professional sound systems.
LOGIC7 allows passengers to enjoy an absolutely authentic, original sound
environment for all types of music. This feature is standard on the 760Li.
LOGIC7 is a special digital audio signal processing concept for two-channel
stereo signals and multi-channel multi-media signals.
A further important feature is that this top-end HiFi fits perfectly into the
iDrive concept, requiring only the Controller and Control Display for all
functions and operations.
The LOGIC7 system available on top of the already standard HiFi loudspeaker
system in the new BMW 7 Series also offers the very best sound possible for an
automobile.
With its matrix circuit, the system can convert analogue or digital stereo
recordings into surround-sound signals heard and felt through nine separate
speakers. To do this, the system splits up all stereo input signals into several
individual signals and then processes them according to the car's specific
geometry and requirements.
To generate a sound effect as close to the original as possible, the LOGIC7
uses the space information in each stereo signal and breaks this information
down into two sound dimensions: The place where the sound was generated and the
acoustic environment or place in which the sound is now transmitted.
