Toyota has topped the motor vehicle sales charts in New South Wales for the
first half of 2005.
According to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries
(FCAI), Toyota sold 32,380 vehicles to the end of June, achieving a 20.6 per
cent share of the market, compared to nearest rivals Holden (17.4 per cent) and
Ford (12.4 per cent).
Top performer for Toyota was its ever-popular Corolla, which was the state’s
best-selling Small Car with 7745 sales – up slightly on the same period last
year.
Four-cylinder Camry was the top-selling Medium Car in New South Wales with
sales of 3841 – up 2.9 per cent in the first six months of 2004.
Echo dominated the Light Car class over the period with 3415 sales, an
increase of 4.4 per cent.
“It’s notable that Toyota’s fuel-efficient four-cylinder models have all
performed strongly so far this year in a market where the sharply rising cost of
petrol is a major issue, especially in larger car segments,” said Toyota’s
regional manager – eastern region, Sean Hanley.
New-generation HiLux retained the outgoing model’s position as the state’s
most popular 4x4 Cab Chassis/Pick-up with 1965 sales – representing one in four
of all sales in the segment.
New-generation HiAce Van has been greeted enthusiastically by commercial
vehicle customers in New South Wales, its sales growing by 9.4 per cent for the
half-year to easily top the Van segment.
“For those who own and drive vans for a living, new HiAce has become the
vehicle to be seen in – dealers are telling us it’s got real street
credibility,” said Sean Hanley.
Toyota has also dominated the booming sports utility vehicle (SUV) market so
far this year.
The Toyota SUV line-up of RAV4, Kluger, Prado and LandCruiser wagon captured
26.1 per cent of the growing market.
