Melbourne - Dan Brown’s best-selling novel, “The Da Vinci Code”, cast
the iconic European city car, the smart fortwo, in a hair-raising chase scene
through the heart of Paris. As Australian moviegoers this week settle in to
watch one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated movie releases, they will see
their heroes make their escape in the zippy two-seater on the big screen.
“With more impact and credibility than any advertising or marketing we could
carry out, the car’s spectacular role in the book, and now the movie, conveys
best the European charm and appeal of the smart car,” said Mr Sam Tabart, Senior
Manager for the smart brand in Australia.
According to Tabart, the incredible interest surrounding the book and now the
film version of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ will stimulate plenty of interest in
Australia for the smart fortwo. However he believes the car’s movie role will do
more for smart in Australia than just create additional exposure.
“Like so many iconic movie chase scenes that have gone before it, the smart’s
escape antics in the movie version of “The Da Vinci Code” will help build the
identity of the brand in Australia.
“We’re delighted the producers kept the integrity of the novel intact with
respect to Sophie Neveu’s smart fortwo”, he said.
In “The Da Vinci Code,” the head curator of the Paris Louvre is murdered. He
leaves mysterious clues of a hidden code in the works of Leonardo da Vinci. The
symbologist Robert Langdon, played by Tom Hanks, is the prime suspect. But the
police are not the only ones following him: an obscure sect is after him too.
Its members will do anything to stop him from continuing his research.
The smart demonstrates its qualities as an agile city car in a hair-raising
chase scene: the smart speeds backwards along a footpath, and then just makes it
across the road between two freight trucks coming from opposite directions.
The movie will be screened for the first time ever on Wednesday in Cannes –
as of Thursday, it begins showing in cinemas around the world.
