Melbourne’s early spring weather has lifted the lid on some classic
Mercedes-Benz sports models in time for Shannons classic vehicle auction on
Monday September 4.
Three SL roadsters, a beautiful 300 SE cabriolet and a stylish 380 SEC coupe
are going under the hammer in the auction, alongside 37 other classic vehicles
and 17 memorabilia items.
Perhaps the standout SL is the original right hand drive 1965 ‘Pagoda roof’
230SL that is being offered with both factory soft and hard top roofs.
The vehicle has been the subject of a recent total rebuild and comes with a
Worrell’s of Toorak service history. It has been driven sparingly and never in
the wet over the past 10 years and is regarded by Shannons as one of the most
outstanding examples of the 230SL available.
It is expected to sell in the $44,000-$50,000 range.
As an alternative, bidders at Shannons on Monday will have the choice of two
190SL convertibles: a white 1958 model and a red 1959 example.
Delivered new in Australia, the white 1958 model was the winner of the 1991
Mercedes-Benz Club Concours d’Elegance and remains in excellent condition. The
red 1959 model was originally an English right hand drive delivery that arrived
in Australia in 2000. According to Shannons, it requires some minor attention to
its paintwork, but otherwise is in good order.
The 190SLs are expected to sell in the range from $64,000-$72,000 and
$40,000-$46,000 respectively.
Just as stylish, but with room for five adults is the stunning white with red
leather Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Cabriolet that Shannons expect to sell for
$55,000-$65,000.
However those looking for classic Mercedes-Benz style at a more affordable
price will be drawn to the lovely Signal Red 1984 model 380 SEC coupe that has
covered just 153,341km since new in the hands of its two owners – the most
recent being well-known Melbourne social identity and former race driver Peter
Janson.
Shannons expect it to sell for between $10,000 and $14,000.
All lots in Monday’s auction can be viewed at Shannons showroom, 321 Warrigal
Road, Cheltenham over the coming weekend, September 2-3 from 9.00am-5.00pm both
days.
