If it was any more macho, it would need a shave, not a polish.
The lime metallic green 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet Fastback that
Shannons are auctioning in Melbourne on Monday November 27 is the stuff American
muscle car fans loose sleep over.
Big block Mustangs, particular Mach I models with the 428 Cobra Jet option
rated at a conservative 335HP, are rare and extremely desirable vehicles.
Described by Hot Rod magazine as “the fastest running pure stock car in the
history of man”, the 428 Cobra Jet was introduced in April, 1968 and ran for
three glorious years, providing Ford with a heavyweight contender for the
toughest muscle cars of the day.
The Mach 1’s iconic fastback body, with its special ribbed aluminium rocker
panels with distinctive script, black bonnet stripes, NASCAR twist-lock bonnet
pins and prominent ‘Shaker’ scoop fitted as standard on big-block V8 variants,
gave the vehicle its aggressive stance beloved by collectors today.
This very special left hand drive 1970 Mach 1 with matching numbers is one of
only 320 built with the desirable combination of the 428 Cobra Jet engine and
factory four-speed gearbox.
Recently imported into Australia, the Mustang comes with the Vass
Certificate, original dealer invoice and receipts (showing delivery to Elgin
Motors of Bay Street in Toronto, Canada) supplied on sale.
Additional factory options fitted include power front disc brakes, power
steering and an AM radio. Fully rebuilt in 2002, the car has a fresh motor, a
new ram clutch plus a 3.45:1 ‘locker’ differential.
It is believed that the vehicle has never been involved in an accident and
the very straight and rust-free body was repainted in 1994 and remains in top
condition.
Shannons are quoting a selling range of $50,000 to $60,000, but after the
$150,000 paid for a 1968 left hand drive Shelby 350H and $189,000 paid for a
1967 Shelby GT500 at Shannons Sydney Motor Show Auction, this may be
conservative for such a desirable big-block Mustang.
