Up to 1,000 special vehicles, from historic and classic cars and motorcycles to
street machines and hot rods are expected to pack the lawns of Old Parliament
House Canberra on Sunday March 11 for Canberra’s largest free automotive event –
Shannons Wheels Expo 2007.
Sponsored by Shannons, Wheels 2007 is one of two major annual events hosted
by the Council of ACT Motor Clubs.
Each March since 1982, hundreds of vehicle enthusiasts have participated in
this trip down memory lane, which is an official part of the Canberra Festival
supported by Australian Capital Tourism and Celebrate Canberra.
More than 600 vehicles took part in Shannons Wheels 2006, with their owners,
friends and admirers enjoying a picnic day on the Parliamentary lawns. A feature
of the event was the official unveiling of the Canberra Pie Cart, which was
restored as a joint project between the Council and the students of Copland
College, Melba.
Shannons Wheels 2007 is open at no cost to all members of the ACT’s estimated
100 car and motorcycle clubs, as well as individual enthusiasts and their
vehicles.
Council of ACT Motor Clubs organiser Chris Faulkner expects the growing
popularity of the event will soon see the magic 1,000 vehicles in attendance –
many from clubs that have not previously participated in ‘Wheels’.
Although it is the second largest motoring event in the ACT in sheer size
behind January’s Summernats, Shannons Wheels 2007 is the largest local event of
its type and is predominantly patronised by Canberra-based enthusiasts.
“Wheels is a non-competitive, relaxed day out with a huge range of special
vehicles and its informal nature is its attraction, “ said Chris Faulkner.
Shannons Wheels Expo is also the CACTMC's annual charity display day. In
2006, the Noah’s Ark Resource Centre Rivett benefited from the display of
vintage, veteran, historic, classic, modified cars, commercials, fire engines,
radio controlled cars and motorcycles.
Noah’s Ark lends toys and books and provides early intervention services to
families and children with special needs. This community based and funded
service has been operating for more than 30 years. Now in its 24th year, Wheels
has raised nearly $300 000 for local Canberra charities.
