Prominent pioneers in the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, China and France have already racked up more than two million km in a fleet of BMW Hydrogen 7 limousines.

Drawn from the world of politics, business and the Arts, the pioneers are the first to experience the full integration of hydrogen technology with typical BMW driving dynamics.

The first Hydrogen 7 driver, German Federal Minister for Economy and Technology, Michael Glos, spoke with enthusiasm about the handover.

“We urgently need alternatives that conserve our natural resources and global climate.

“BMW demonstrates how the German automotive industry is pressing ahead with methods of resolution to ensure the sustainable mobility of tomorrow,” Mr Glos said.

Since April, BMW’s Hydrogen 7 has been handed over to many prominent personalities including the Deputy Mayor of London, Nicky Gavron, the CEO of Marks & Spencer, Stuart Rose, and the EU Commissioner for Energy, Andris Piebalgs.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 has also been sharing the limelight with several prominent celebrities, such as Richard Gere and Sharon Stone, who recently arrived in BMW Hydrogen 7 style at the Cinema for Peace Gala in Berlin.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie also enjoyed a taste of Hydrogen 7 power at the “Ocean’s Thirteen” premiere in Hollywood.

Even the world's most famous soprano, Anna Netrebko, will be driving a BMW Hydrogen 7 during her tour through Germany this year.

German actors Christiane Paul and Axel Milberg will also be driving with the BMW Hydrogen 7 over the next few months. Since Christopher Lee and Kevin Kline have also travelled in the BMW Hydrogen 7, they will be in good company.

Recently the CEO of Linde AG, Wolfgang Reitzle, received his new BMW Hydrogen 7 company car.

"BMW and Linde are working intensively together on the realisation of hydrogen-based, sustainable mobility. With the BMW Hydrogen 7 BMW has made a very important step towards series production. The vehicle therefore means much more to me than just a new company car. The BMW Hydrogen 7 is proof that hydrogen technology is suitable for everyday use in driving," he said.

Christoph Huss, the head of Science and Transport Policy of the BMW Group is satisfied with the first BMW Hydrogen 7 handovers.

“The positive response of our first customers undoubtedly supports the fact that we are on the right course with the concept of the BMW Hydrogen 7 which uses a hydrogen internal combustion engine,” said Mr Huss.

The BMW Group is forging ahead with hydrogen technology. The group has been actively pursuing the concept of sustainable mobility for more than two decades. Petrol is expected to be replaced by hydrogen as a source of energy in the long term.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 limousines already on the road are the first of a small production run of 100 cars that offer a bi-fuel solution, giving the choice of petrol or hydrogen as a power source. The cars underwent a typical full BMW engineering pre-production process to ensure they meet the same quality and durability standards as every BMW. In addition to the rigorous production development work, all the BMW Hydrogen 7 vehicles will deliver the driving dynamics, refinement and interior comfort expected of a BMW 7 Series.
