Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI – Best Small Family
Car Volkswagen Eos 2.0 TSI – Best Open Top Car
Wolfsburg / London, 18 January 2008: Yesterday Volkswagen scored
victories all over Europe. At midday, Germany’s Automobile Association ADAC
presented its “Yellow Angel” award to Europe’s biggest carmaker in Munich. A few
hours later in London, Volkswagen won the prestigious “What Car? Award” in two
categories.
The Golf 1.4 TSI was named “Best Small Family Car” for the second year
running amidst fierce competition. The ten-man journalist jury from the UK’s
top-selling motoring magazine was looking for the “small family friend” among
numerous vehicle types. The car needed to provide sufficient space and
protection for adults, children and their luggage when travelling on motorways,
in town and in commuter traffic. One decisive criteria was certainly the fact
that over 70,000 Golfs were sold in the British Isles last year.
Dr Rüdiger Szengel, head of petrol engine development, says: “I am extremely
proud. This award confirms the international success of our innovative TSI
engines. By using this concept, Volkswagen has managed to reduce consumption
and, at the same time, increase performance.”
The Eos also picked up an award in London last night for the second time in
succession. In the category “Best Open Top Car”, the What Car? editors voted in
favour of the Volkswagen by a clear majority. They were impressed by both the
powerful 2.0-litre TSI engine and also the excellent design that is rounded off
by the five-part folding roof.
