A ‘dirty dozen’ of highly desirable Australian and American V8 muscle cars is
going under the hammer at Shannons 13th annual Melbourne Motor Show Auction on
Monday (March 10).
The local bruisers are led by a muscular 1971 XY GT-HO Phase III sedan and
ably supported by four Falcon GTs (an XW, an XY, an XA and an XB), a 5.0 litre
V8 Holden HJ Monaro SS, two LX Torana A9X models (a sedan and a hatchback), a
5.0 litre Torana SS hatchback and a 1986 VL Commodore SS Group A sedan.
With an estimated selling range of $550-$620,000, much of the focus will be
on the Falcon GT-HO, which apart from a respray in its original Yellow Ochre
colour, remains entirely unrestored.
Described as being in excellent condition throughout, the car recently
featured in Shannons television advertisements and numerous magazine articles.
However perhaps the standout car of this muscle pack is the two-owner,
matching numbers 1971 XY Falcon GT, which was totally restored from the ground
up over a 12-month period by the G.T.Shop.
The car is stunningly presented in Electric Blue with black vinyl trim– one
of just 13 made in this colour combination, of which just three survive – and is
being sold with its original books, manuals and a letter of verification from
Ford.
Because of its exceptional condition, Shannons expect it could sell in the
range from $260-$310,000.
The other Falcon GTs in the auction are a Diamond White 1970 XW GT 4-speed
manual (formerly a 3-speed automatic) that was restored back in the 1980s
($120-$140,000), a very well cared-for Summer Gold 1972 XA GT 3-speed automatic
($85-$105,000) and an unrestored Copper Bronze XB GT 3-speed automatic – the
only one made in 1976 in this colour scheme ($40-$50,000).
A9X enthusiasts have a choice of two highly-desirable Jasmine Yellow 1977 LX
Toranas – an award-winning A9X hatchback with tan interior that is understood to
have covered just 78,000km since new and a restored four-door A9X sedan with
black interior that was restored over a nine year period after being found
neglected behind a block of flats in Melbourne.
Shannons are quoting a guiding range of $210-$250,000 for the hatchback and
$140-$180,000 for the sedan.
A more affordable alternative for Torana hatchback lovers is a carefully and
correctly restored, white 1977 Torana LX Torana SS 5.0 that Shannons expect to
sell for $25-$40,000.
The other ‘Aussie’ muscle cars are a striking Mandarin Red 1975 HJ Monaro GTS
5.0 litre coupe with three-speed automatic transmission ($40-$50,000) and a very
original Permanent Red 1986 VL Commodore HDT Group A SS sedan ($50-$60,000).
The American V8 muscle cars in the auction are a 1969 Dodge Charger 440 R/T
‘General Lee’ coupe – one of a handful of show cars built to promoter the Dukes
of Hazzard TV series by General Lee Enterprises ($220-$260,000) and a right hand
drive twin turbo 1987 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway convertible with just 31,077
miles on its odometer ($80-$90,000).
The ‘dirty dozen’ muscle cars are amongst 53 vehicles and 50 items of
automotive memorabilia in the Shannons Motor Show auction, which will be held
from 2.30pm on Monday, March 10.
All lots can be viewed free of charge each day leading up to the auction in
the Concourse area of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, No 1 Clarendon Street,
South Melbourne.
