“The intent to decrease taxes by 1.43 billion over four years,
retain a budget surplus and provide for increased services to the community is a
credit to Treasurer Lenders and Premier Brumby.”
In VACC’s view, 5% less payroll tax, a 1.387% Workcover
premium and a $490 million decrease in land taxes resulting from raised
thresholds and lower rates would improve Victoria’s competitiveness for
businesses when compared to other States.
“A further extension of the apprentice and trainee completion
rebate and attention to skills development and TAFE Funding is also beneficial
and will assist the automotive industry to remain competitive,” Mr Purchase
said.
“VACC is looking forward to further consultations on skills
and TAFE equipment funding in the near future.
Mr Purchase also supported increased road funding and a
commitment to reduce traffic congestion. Improved public transport and freight
is also welcomed by VACC as is the increase of $224million in spending on
regional road works that include the Princes Highway, Western Highway and Yarra
Glen truck bypass.
On the road safety issue, Mr Purchase acknowledged the
commitment to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. “However, we also recommend
that funding for motor scooter safe routes be considered by the Government over
the next year as a key part of the solution to traffic congestion.
“Overall VACC’s initial analysis is that the first John
Lenders budget is a solid performance and likely to find favour by business
owners and families,” Mr Purchase said.
