Ride and handling

Extensive local tuning and specific calibration of the i40 Tourer’s suspension and steering systems was carried out over thousands of kilometres of differing road conditions, to meet the needs of Australia drivers.

The i40 Tourer features a new MacPherson strut front suspension setup which significantly reduces cornering lean and enhances stability. A multi-link rear suspension system assists to provide outstanding ride and handling characteristics.

Amplitude Selective Dampers (ASD) are standard across all trim levels on the i40 Tourer. ASDs deliver a smoother more comfortable ride under cruising conditions, whilst providing superior vehicle dynamics under demanding driving conditions.

Speed-sensitive Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) is utilised on the i40 Tourer, in-lieu of a conventional hydraulic system, not only minimising weight and fuel consumption, but allowing integration of the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system.

The i40 makes use of new technology in the Cornering Brake Control (CBC) system, which provides side-to-side brake pressure proportioning using EBD, resulting in optimised vehicle deceleration and stability whilst braking into a turn.

Advanced safety technology

i40 Tourer achieves the maximum ANCAP 5-star safety rating.

i40 Tourer comes with a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies as standard, including Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), ABS with EBD & Brake Assist System (BAS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC).

The VSM system integrally manages the active safety features (e.g. ESC, TCS, ABS and EBD) and Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system. VSM enhances directional stability by applying the active safety features as needed and by providing counter steering assistance for the driver, helping the driver steer the vehicle in the correct direction. The implementation of VSM can alleviate the loss of vehicle control which can be experienced whilst applying sudden braking or rapid acceleration under asymmetric (wet/dry) road surface conditions, as well as sudden lane changes.

All variants feature a full host of advanced passive safety features including nine airbags as standard on all trims - driver and front passenger, driver knee, driver and front passenger side (thorax), rear outboard side (thorax), and full length curtain - as well as anti-whiplash headrests for the driver and front passenger.

Furthermore, the i40 Tourer’s body makes extensive use of ultra-high tensile steel. Several design features are also used to improve crashworthiness, resulting in a stiffer and safer car. Multiple pedestrian safety features (such as the impact absorbing bonnet structure and member-less front-end side module) are implemented to reduce the chance of pedestrian injury in the case of a collision.

For parking with safety and ease, the i40 Tourer is fitted with a reverse camera built into the tailgate. Images from the camera are relayed in the driver’s rear-view mirror with additional distance indicators projected on screen to show the width of the vehicle and distance to any objects behind (Premium variants).

Front and rear park assist systems (Elite and Premium variants) operate when parking or manoeuvring the vehicle in confined spaces. Body-coloured sensors mounted on the front and rear bumpers enhance safety by sounding an audible alarm and providing a visual indication when an obstacle is detected. The front and rear sensors may be disabled via a switch in the centre console.

New technology glossary
In Hyundai’s quest to make driving both safer and more pleasurable, the company is continually developing and applying innovative thinking, further strengthening the brand’s reputation as a technology-driven company, demonstrating Hyundai’s brand philosophy of ‘New Thinking. New Possibilities’.

Nine-airbags & active anti-whiplash headrests
Standard on all trims is a nine airbag system. The system consists of driver and front passenger, driver knee, driver and front passenger side (thorax), rear outboard side (thorax), and full length curtain protection, as well as active anti-whiplash headrests for the driver and front passenger.

Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system
VSM integrates all the active safety systems in the vehicle, including the MDPS steering. VSM intervenes alongside other active safety features such as ESC, TCS, ABS and EBD to help maintain vehicle control by applying a variable input to steering weight, helping prevent the vehicle losing control in emergency situations, such as when suddenly braking or rapidly accelerating under asymmetric (wet or slippery on one side and dry on the other) road surface conditions.

Cornering Brake Control (CBC)
During braking in a turn or steering while braking, the EBD provides appropriate side-to-side brake proportioning through CBC to optimise vehicle deceleration when braking into a turn.

Emergency Stop System (ESS)
When the Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) system on the i40 Tourer senses emergency braking, it automatically flashes the rear brake lights three times and activates the hazard lights until the vehicle starts moving again, providing a warning to any surrounding traffic.

Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS)
Night driving visibility and safety is enhanced with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps incorporating the new Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS). They operate by swivelling in the steering direction. The dynamic beam pattern is able to adapt to varied road conditions (Premium variants).

LED daytime running lights
Providing a distinctive glower to i40 and enhancing visibility, the addition of LED daytime running lights offer a further passive safety treatment for pedestrians and other road operators.

Static bending lights
Additional low beam lamps provide improved side illumination during cornering in the steering direction by throwing a beam outward sideways from the front end of the vehicle.

Speed limiter
The i40 Tourer is fitted with a speed limiter function. The driver simply specifies the desired maximum speed via the steering wheels controls, with the figure displayed in the trip computer. The system allows the vehicle to accelerate up to the selected speed but not beyond, irrespective of accelerator pedal inputs – except if the pedal is depressed to 100% in which case the system is overridden. If the vehicle goes beyond the set speed limit due to road conditions, a chime will sound and the speed will flash in the trip computer as a warning.

Electric Park Brake (EPB)
The new-style park brake frees up cabin space and is applied by simply lifting the lever. The EPB is disengaged by simultaneously depressing the lever and applying pressure to the brake pedal.

Auto Hold
Auto Hold is a driver selectable function which automatically applies the brakes to the vehicle when stationary, to prevent rolling. The braking force is automatically released when the accelerator pedal is depressed. The Auto Hold function is disengaged each time the vehicle is turned off. When the Auto Hold function is activated the EPB will be automatically applied whenever the vehicle is stopped and park gear is selected in the transmission.

Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
Hill-Start Assist Control prevents slipping for as long as two seconds after the brake is applied when the vehicle is on an incline.

Air control system with auto-defogging
When the first droplets of condensation are detected on the windscreen, the sensor automatically initiates the defogging cycle, ensuring optimal clarity all times. This frees the driver to maintain focus and ensure constant maximum forward visibility (Elite and Premium variants).

Ventilated front-seating / heated front & rear-seating
Ventilation technology employs fans under the front seat cushions to pump a gentle stream of cooling air through the seat cushion perforations with three settings for personal comfort (Premium variants).

This system features heating elements in the front and rear seat cushions enhancing passenger comfort. Front passengers have three heat settings to adjust intensity (Premium variants).

Remote key panic button
All i40s have a ‘panic button’ function on the remote key which is clearly marked in red. When the driver presses and holds the red panic “horn” symbol the horn will sound.

Luggage Rail System
Innovative, highly rugged and simple-to-use, this cargo rail system ensures luggage and other loose items can be securely and safely anchored during transport. The system has flexible fittings to accommodate all load shapes and sizes and the segmentation bar can be removed when not in use (Elite and Premium variants).

Colour and trim
The all-new i40 Tourer is available in three trim levels, Active, Elite and Premium; and nine exterior colours matched to a black tone interior.

Exterior colours include solid Creamy White (Active and Elite variants) and a range of stylish metallic or mica colours including Total Black,  Sleek Silver, Blue Passion, Stone Grey, Titanium Silver, Eco Beige and Blue Spirit, with White Crystal (Premium variants).
