1966 Volvo P1800 Enters Guiness Book of Records

21 December, 1998

A 1966 Volvo P1800 coupe has been officially named by the Guinness Book of Records as the holder of the world record for the highest car mileage.

The classic two-seater has covered more than 2,689,200 kilometres (1,671,000 miles) and is still driven every day by its original owner Irv Gordon, of East Patchogue, in New York State.

Mr Gordon's Volvo accumulated the amazing distance - at an average of 81,490 kms a year - on trips through the United States, Canada, England, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and Germany.

How does Mr Gordon explain the durability and longevity of his vehicle?

"I treat my car with love. I maintain and clean it regularly, and I always use genuine Volvo parts during servicing," he said.

The Volvo's latest trip was to Dallas, Texas, where Mr Gordon and his pride and joy welcomed visitors to the Volvo exhibition at an automotive conference and trade exposition.

The low-slung, finned Swede - made famous by the British television series "The Saint" - was sold in Australia between 1962 and 1973.

Many examples are still in regular use in Australia and enthusiasts regard it as one of the most collectable Volvos. In 1986 the Volvo 1800/120 Club of Australia Inc was formed. The 250 member club holds bi-annual rallies around Australia. Bathurst, New South Wales is the venue for the next rally at Easter 2000. Irv Gordon may attend this rally with his famous million miler P1800.

The Volvo 1800/120 Club of Australia is a member of the Volvo Owners Clubs of Australia which also incorporates six state-based all-models clubs.
