Suzuki today launched the world's ultimate performance motorcycle onto the Australian market.
Called 'Hayabusa' after an indigenous Japanese bird-of-prey, which is also capable of speeds in excess of 300km/h... the new Suzuki GSX1300R is the fastest production motorcycle available anywhere in the world.
"From this simple concept, Suzuki has designed a motorcycle that has the performance capability of its namesake and makes normal sports-touring riding equally effortless," says Greg Bryant, Suzuki Australia's National Marketing Manager for Motorcycle and Marine.
"The Hayabusa is a credit to the engineering team, they have not only created Suzuki's most powerful motorcycle ever, but also its most aerodynamic."
Suzuki's Hayabusa GSX1300R is a complete showcase of mechanical and aerodynamic design technology.
The secret to its performance is its advanced aerodynamic package, which was developed not just around the bike itself, but for maximum stability with the rider in place even at 300 km/h.
Its distinctively-styled fairing nose is essential to create the smallest possible frontal area and had to be positioned as low as possible, requiring a new headlight design to be specifically developed.
The newly-shaped headlight combines a free surface multi-reflector low beam positioned above a 70mm projector high beam, producing a wider, brighter light pattern.
Not only does the GSXl300R cut through the wind like no other Suzuki, it utilises its aerodynamic shape to optimise power.
Suzuki's Ram Air Direct (SRAD) intakes are placed close to the centreline of the carefully shaped fairing nose, near the point of maximum air pressure. The integrated turn signals are also positioned and shaped to force more air into these intakes, to maximise the ram-air effect.
This pressurised air is then ducted into a large-capacity airbox and fed into the engine through straight, downdraft intake tracts, resulting in a significant boost in both horsepower and torque.
Underneath the aerodynamic bodywork the new Suzuki is powered by a high-performance 1298cc double overhead camshaft in-line four-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, featuring four- valves per cylinder.
Electronically fuel-injected, the system uses an eight-trigger-pole crank-angle sensor which accurately calculates fuel required to complete optimum combustion at every stage of the performance spectrum.
A compact fuel pump is also mounted to the throttle-body to reduce overall weight.
Not only is the GSX1300R Hayabusa performance-friendly, it is environmentally-friendly too thanks to the addition of Pulsed-secondary Air-injection (PAIR) which minimises unburned hydrocarbons by introducing fresh air into the exhaust ports.
Unlike its namesake, Suzuki's Hayabusa is extremely civilised and rider friendly with plenty of useable power delivered through the six-speed constant mesh transmission.
The frame combines extruded main spars with a cast steering head and swingarm pivot sections, while the engine has been designed as small as possible and mounted low to maximise balance and stability.
Front suspension features inverted forks with 43mm stanchion tubes, and extensive use of aluminium-alloy internal components to reduce weight. Both front and rear suspension have adjustable rebound and compression damping.
Hollow-spoke cast aluminium-alloy wheels carry high performance Bridgestone radial tyres, 120/70ZR17 at the front and 190/50ZR17 at the rear.
Braking comes from twin 3 20mm floating front disc brakes on six-piston calipers, with a 240mm single disc on an opposed two-piston caliper and semi-metal pads at the rear.
Rider comfort on the Hayabusa is assured, even for the pillion passenger, with well-padded seats and, at the rear, an ergonomically placed grab handle and foot pegs.
There is also a storage space located under the passenger seat with enough room to fit an anti-theft U-lock and for added convenience an optional centre stand can be fitted.
Finishing off the Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R is a compact instrument cluster with stepmotor tachometer and speedo, with LED backlighting and indicator lights.
The all-new Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa is priced at $17,490 plus on-road costs. It comes standard with a two-year unlimited kilometre warranty and is available in the colours of Metallic Light Copper Brown/Metallic Ecru Silver or Candy Antares Red/Candy Saturn Black.
