Volkswagens interpretation of the luxury saloon of the future is a major attraction at the Frankfurt Motor Show, currently being held in Germany.
The design study "Concept D" embodies luxury in the shape of a large four-door coupé. The "Concept D" combines elegance with clear and functional design, redefining the term luxury class.
The vehicle sets new standards in design and technology and is a first taste of the luxury saloon to be built at Volkswagens transparent factory in Dresden from the beginning of the next millennium.
With this addition to its range, Volkswagen is aiming to attract buyers of sporting luxury cars. A review of the engine demonstrates the technical sophistication of "Concept D". The striking lines of the bonnet conceal an engine, which is without equal among luxury class vehicles: a V10 direct injection diesel.
This boosted engine boasts an impressive set of performance data as well as a range of innovative features. The two five cylinder banks are set at an angle of 90 degrees have a total volume of 5.0 litres. The high-pressure injector system in combination with a biturbo unit, charge air cooling and electrical charge pressure control enables an output of 230 kW (313 bhp) at 4000 rpm. Even more impressive is the maximum torque of 750 Newton metres at only 2000 rpm.
