TOKYO - Honda Motor Co., Ltd has unveiled its new V10 Formula One racing engine that will propel its comeback into F1 next year.

Pictures of the 3.0-litre engine and details of the new team line-up with British American Racing were revealed on the eve of the Formula One Grand Prix at Suzuka this weekend.

Honda, which will supply engine and chassis technology to BAR, announced that the new collaboration would be called British American Racing Honda.

The company said F1 engines would be developed and manufactured by Honda Research and Development in Japan, while engine maintenance and management would be performed by the new British-based Honda Racing Development (HRD).

Drivers for the British American Racing Honda team will be 1997 World F1 Champion and 1995 Indy Driver's Champion, Jacques Villeneuve, and 1998 FIA GT Champion Ricardo Zonta.

Through this joint project, Honda will be entering its third era of F1 participation, more than 36 years since its first race in 1964. The first era ended in 1968, and Honda resumed racing in 1983 with a record-breaking six championships in eight years.

Honda's success in Formula One includes World Constructors' Championship in:

1986 (Williams Honda);
1987 (Williams Honda);
1988 (McLaren Honda);
1989 (McLaren Honda);
1990 (McLaren Honda);
1991 (McLaren Honda).
World Driving Championships were achieved in: 1987 (Nelson Piquet - Williams Honda);
1988 (Ayrton Senna - McLaren Honda);
1989 (Alain Prost - McLaren Honda);
1990 (Ayrton Senna - McLaren Honda);
1991 (Ayrton Senna - McLaren Honda).
BAR Honda is expected to debut its Formula One car at the opening round of the F1 season in Melbourne in March 2000.

The team is expected to commence track testing of the new powerplant from December this year.
