Volkswagen has introduced the latest generation of its MPV, the Sharan, at the recent Geneva Motor Show. The new Sharan features some dramatic styling changes in both the interior and exterior.
The Sharan, while not available in Australia, has been a popular people move in Europe and this latest model demonstrates that it is a class leader.
The Volkswagen designers have, with the new design of the front and rear ends, progressively integrated the Sharan into the current brand design line. Furthermore, the interior of the Volkswagen MPV has been redesigned in every detail. The comprehensive revision of the dash panel, instruments, door trims and seats have made the new Sharan fit for the new millennium.
Two new engines and the introduction of the six-speed gearbox as standard are the most important developments in the drive technology. The V6 and the 85 kW TDI with 4MOTION four wheel drive will be available at a later date.
Hardly any of the elements in the interior have remained unaltered in the new Sharan. In this way, Volkswagen has emphasised, both in style and function, the top demands that the brand makes on its products.
A variety of van-specific solutions have been implemented in the interior in order to suitably meet the special requirements of an MPV. There are, for example, two additional large stowage areas which can be opened easily by gently pressing on the release.
Above average driving comfort has always been one of the Sharan's strengths. The level of comfort has, however been increased in the new model. The seat unit in particular will now set the top standard for this class.
The front seats, which can rotate if requested, provide optimum side support and the thigh support on the back seats has been considerably improved.
The drive technology: For the market launch, the new Sharan will be on offer with three petrol and two unit injector diesel engines. The performance spectrum lies between 66 kW (90 bhp) and 150 kW (204 bhp). New to the Sharan programme are the high torque diesel direct injection 1.9 PD TDI with 85 kW (115 bhp) and the dynamic 2.8 V6. This six-cylinder petrol engine builds up an output of 150 kW (204 bhp).
Currently there are no plans to introduce the Sharan into the Australian market.
