Can you drive a car around the world in 80 days and use only 1,000 litres of fuel? Thats the challenge Volkswagens engineers have set for themselves as they left Germany on May 16 in a Volkswagen "3 litre" Lupo.
The Lupo, the smallest car in Volkswagen European range, can travel 100 kilometres on less than 3 litres of diesel fuel, without sacrificing passenger comfort, safety or performance. It is not only the worlds most economical production car, but is also the most environmentally friendly - low fuel consumption means low emissions.
With a long list of advanced features, the Lupo showcases Volkswagens leading edge technology. Extensive use is made of aluminum and magnesium in its construction, whilst the engine s a three cylinder, 1200cc turbo diesel driving through a tiptronic gearbox. Left in drive, the engine will automatically cut off its fuel supply when stationary or on overrun, restarting when the throttle is reapplied.
Volkswagens "Lupo 80 Days" project started in Berlin and will end at Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany on August 3.
It is anticipated by then that the Lupo will have travelled 33,333 kilometres and shouldl be eligible for an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.
The Lupo is due to cross five continents in the 80 days, including Australia from Perth to Sydney. It will travel approximately 400 kilometres a day across Europe, South Africa, Asia, Australia, Amercia, North Africa and return to Central Europe.
The Lupo is due to arrive in Perth on May 30, crossing the Nullabor and arriving in Sydney on June 7.
