Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) have been virtually standard equipment on most makes of passenger cars for several years but it has taken the truck operators a little longer to realise the real cost/benefits of this safety feature.
Standard on Sterling
Sterling Trucks Australia announced today that ABS braking is now standard on its new flagship SilverStar and AT9500 heavy duty trucks.
"I believe that the addition of ABS as a standard fitting on the SilverStar and AT9500 models, and the availability of the system as an option across our whole range, is an excellent example of Sterling's commitment to the safety and well being of its customers," said Frank LaSerra, Senior Executive, Sterling Trucks Australia.
'We not only believe that ABS offers a definite safety advantage to operators, we are also committed to providing the system at the lowest possible cost. Not only is ABS standard on our premium models but is also an extremely competitively priced option on our LT9500 and LT7500 models at a recommended retail price of only $2,268 (inc. GST).
The System
ABS is simply a system that adjusts brake application pressure to a wheel as soon as it begins to slip, thus helping that wheel to maintain grip. It uses sensors in the wheels to relay the message to the ABS control unit that the wheel is slipping and the unit temporarily releases the brake on that wheel. Of course, all this happens several times a second.
Sterling Trucks Australia is launching its new-look range across the country in July this year.
