Sterling Trucks Australia has a brand new flagship — the SilverStar — and it looks set to shine brilliantly in the Australian truck market.

The SilverStar represents the next step in the establishment of Sterling as a major manufacturer and distributor of quality heavy-duty trucks. It also represents a new image for the company and the first all-new model since the company began selling trucks in Australia in 1999.

"We are all very excited about the new SilverStar," said Sean Flaherty, National Sales Manager with Sterling Trucks Australia. "This impressively-styled truck is instantly recognisable as a Sterling due to the new bold nameplate, chrome grille and front sheet metal changes.

Sean Flaherty said he was pleased with the first year of trading but was looking forward to a substantial lift in sales when the new models take to the roads.

The SilverStar is the 'flagship' of a new model range from Sterling that includes three other updated models with some exciting new developments to come at a later date.

Big, Bold And Beautiful

The SilverStar's aggressive stance and classic chromework immediately establish it as a powerful, well-built and tough truck. The long bonnet and Bumper to Back of Cab (BBC) dimensions of 122" help make it stand out on the highway and provides superior ride characteristics and a safe driver environment.

Polished alloy wheels, bright SilverStar door emblems, body colour bumper with polished alloy inserts and the bold 'Sterling' name across the wide grille stamp this truck with instant authority.

The standard power plant is the new powerful and economical Caterpillar C-15, 435hp with 1 ,6501b/ft of torque. The C-15 engine is also available with a rating of 550hp and 1 ,850lb/ft of torque for higher power applications. For even more power and torque the SilverStar also offers the Caterpillar C-16 that is rated up to 600hp and a stump-pulling 2,050lb/ft of torque.

The Detroit Series 60, 1 2.7litre engine with ratings up to 500hp and 1 ,650lb/ft of torque and the well-proven Cummins N14 are also available on request.

Accessibility to the engine and maintenance points is enhanced by the large forward-opening bonnet and guards which allow easy 'walk-in' servicing and access to service areas.

A choice of 13 or 18-speed transmissions from Eaton, heavy duty front and drive axles from Mentor and a range of suspensions that include Sterling's AirLiner as well as Hendrickson and Neway air suspensions thus ensures that the SilverStar has the equipment to deliver the promise of its dramatic appearance.

The AirLiner rear suspension, with its low-maintenance design that saves weight and operating costs, uses the latest technology to produce a superb ride without compromise — easier on the driver and the load!

Safety

Standard ABS braking system adds considerably to the overall safety of the SilverStar. It provides the driver with total steering control even under severe braking conditions. The addition of standard ABS is further evidence of Sterling's commitment to driver safety in its trucks. Three-point seat belts are also provided for driver and passenger.

Inside

For drivers, the inside story is all good news. Standard seating is the new National 2000 Series High-Back units with arm rests provided for both driver and passenger. Bostrum Talladega 915 seats can be specified as an option.

The interior trim has a truly upmarket look and feel with 'Prestige' Pewter cloth trim on doors and seats with a lighter Sahara colour used on textured surfaces, headliner, sun visor and dashboard.

Colour-coordinated non-woven material is used on the lower segment of the cab interior and Sahara vinyl wrap on the upper surfaces. Ash coloured vinyl mats cover the floor area.

The additional standard equipment list reads like some other vehicle's options list. Apart from those mentioned above, the SilverStar has dual Hadley air horns, exterior sunvisor, two-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome finish door handles, spring-mounted stainless steel tail lamp brackets and 8" spotter side mirrors.

"The SilverStar is a very prestigious addition to our range and is the spearhead of Sterling's new look for 2000," Sean Flaherty said. "With the other new releases plus some exciting new models in the pipeline, Sterling Trucks Australia is rapidly establishing itself as the leader of conventional truck sales in Australia."
