Mitsubishi Motors has extended its powerful 3.0 litre V6 engine into the Triton 2WD range, and introduced two new diesel models in its latest upgrade of the Company's workhorse.

Originally launched as the L200 Express in 1981, with the reputation of being a tough one-tonne ute, the 9th (and current) MK generation was launched onto the Australian market in November 1996. With an enviable reputation for toughness and reliability established over many years the current generation used a 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol and naturally aspirated 2.8 litre diesel engine in 2WD variants, while a powerful 3.0 litre V6 petrol and the 2.8 litre diesel engines were available in 4WD models at launch.

The introduction of the 3.0 litre V6 was the first time an engine of this size, power and torque char acteristics had been available for the Australian one-tonne ute market from the dominant Japanese manufacturers.

Triton set the class image with its muscular rounded look when it was introduced in late 1996. This same bold 4WD look is carried through into the four new 3.0 litre V6-engined 4X2 models, as these models come with 1 6"X6" new-style six-spoke alloy-look polished pressed steel wheels, filled with 205/80R16 tyres. The additional 25mm ground clearance should be a boon for owners.

Mitsubishi is now making the same power available throughout Triton's 2WD models, so that the tradespeople who find this ute an ideal workhorse will be able to carry their loads more safely. This engine augments the 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine throughout the range, resulting in petrol engines being the engine of choice in 2WD models.

The 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine produces a healthy 133kW of power at 5250 rpm and 255Nm of torque at 4500 rpm, while the 2.4 litre four-cylinder engine delivers an impressive 192Nm of raw torque at 4000 rpm.

The 2WD Triton range now becomes:

  • 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, manual transmission GL cab chassis,
  • 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine, manual and automatic transmission GLX cab chassis (new mod els),
  • 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, manual transmission GLX club cab,
  • 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, manual transmission GLX double cab,
  • 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine, manual and automatic transmission GLX double cab (new models).

At the same time as making the changes to its 2WD Triton range Mitsubishi has also overhauled its 4WD range. Added to the existing range of GLX cab chassis, club cab and double cab mod els are two new manual diesel variants — a GLX club cab and a GLS double cab.

The 4WD Triton range now becomes:

  • 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine, manual transmission GLX cab chassis,
  • 2.8 litre four-cylinder diesel engine, manual transmission GLX cab chassis,
  • 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine, manual transmission GLX club cab,
  • 2.8 litre four-cylinder diesel engine, manual transmission GLX club cab (new model),
  • 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine, manual transmission GLX double cab,
  • 2.8 litre four-cylinder diesel engine, manual transmission GLX double cab,
  • 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine, manual and automatic transmission GLS double cab,
  • 2.8 litre four-cylinder diesel engine, manual transmission GLS double cab (new model).

Mitsubishi has also added its acclaimed INVECS II intelligent logic automatic transmission to the Triton range with this upgrade. The transmission is widely regarded as arguably the best main stream automatic transmission available. It learns and adapts to the driver's individual driving style, and varies the shift points accordingly.

Remote keyless entry also becomes available on the top-of-the-range GLS double cab petrol and diesel models.

Pricing for all Triton 4X2 V6s will be set competitively with the market leader, Holden Rodeo.
