Toyota has sold a record number of MR2s in each of the two months since the launch of the new model.

In November, its first full month of sales, 74 MR2 Spyders were delivered, beating the previous best of 61 established by the first generation MR2.

December sales climbed again to 99 of Toyota's first designed-from-the-outset open-top sports car.

Toyota expects to deliver more than 600 of the new MR2 Spyder in its first full year on sale, which would beat the MR2's previous record of 483 sales achieved in 1990.

The company believes sports car sales will boom this summer, and that MR2 has the potential to push sales of the sports and coupe segment to over 10,000 units for the first time in four years.

Toyota hopes its MR2 will capture a third of the market for true soft-top sports cars.

MR2 Spyder came to market in October 2000 at $44,990 - 6.1 percent less than the model it replaced, and 21.6 percent beneath the previous premium model.

The new MR2 has improved overall handling, performance, safety and economy compared with the superseded MR2 coupe.

It has an easy-to-use manual convertible top incorporating a glass rear window.

The MR2 Spyder is also the first Toyota to feature a sequential-shift manual transmission.

It has an automated clutch and gears that can be changed either by using a short- throw gear lever or E-shift buttons on the steering wheel.

The MR2 is powered by a new 1.8 litre four-cylinder Twin Cam Multi-valve engine equipped with variable valve timing (VVTi), which produces 103kW of power and l7ONm of torque.

The car is significantly lighter than the previous model, giving it a better power to weight ratio than its competitors and helping to improve fuel economy.

The weight reduction has been achieved despite the car having a longer wheelbase and wider track than the previous MR2, thereby improving roadholding.

The steering system is Toyota's unique electro-hydraulic power steering (or optimum response and minimum load on the engine.

Safety equipment includes dual SRS airbags, pretensioning seatbelts with force limiters, whiplash lessening seat design, and an ABS anti-skid braking system fitted as standard.

Interior features include a four-speaker audio system with 6-CD in-dash multi changer.
