Shannons GP Auction Achieves Record $1.6 M Sales

14 March, 2001

Cars and automobilia worth more than $1.6 million changed hands at the Official Grand Prix Auction presented by Shannons at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre on Monday.

With more than 60 per cent of all lots sold, the result was a record for a Shannons Grand Prix Auction, which has been part of the annual Australian Grand Prix programme in Melbourne since 1996.

Around 500 registered bidders snapped up items as diverse as a rare 1936 Alvis Speed 20 Drop Head Coupe to assorted Grand Prix memorabilia.

Top price of the auction was $170,000 paid for the Alvis, which was originally passed in but sold later to a Melbourne enthusiast. A superb 1973 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible that carried Mohamed Ali on a lap of honour at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before the 1998 AFL Grand Final, sold for $120,000, while a 1936 SS1 2.5 litre Tourer went to a telephone bidder for $117,000.

A highlight of the auction was the prices paid for two special Ford Mustangs. A 1967 GTA Convertible formerly owned by Kylie Minogue and restored over a six-year period by her father Ron, sold for $59,000, while a 1969 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback brought applause when it sold for $82,000.

The 'Kylie' Mustang will join a Melbourne vehicle collection, while the GT500 is off to Hong Kong.

A once-stately Rolls-Royce, which was traded in on a humble Ford Prefect in 1949 and is believed to have competed in the 1953 RedeX around Australia Trial, was reunited with its original owner’s family at the auction.

Queenscliff, Victoria car enthusiast, John Mackeddie, paid $31,000 to repurchase the 1926 Phantom I Coupe originally owned by his grandfather, John Mackeddie and subsequently traded by his mother when he was four years old.

The vehicle, which was complete, but only partially restored, featured a distinctive two-door coupe body by well-known Melbourne coachbuilders, Martin and King.

The lowest vehicle price of the auction was $1500 paid for an unrestored 1936 Daimler Straight Eight chassis.

One of two cars owned by the late Robert Shannon - a 1995 Maserati Bi-Turbo Spyder - sold for $54,000. But his prized 1916 Locomobile Speedster was passed in.

Special number plates fared well as usual. The Victorian black and white enamel plate ‘162’ brought $24,000; the number ‘1002’ sold for $10,750 and the number ‘986 986’ was worth $1500 to a Porsche Boxster owner.

However, despite an all-the-way victory by reigning Formula 1 Champion Michael Schumacher in the recent 2001 Qantas Australian Grand Prix, there was comparatively little interest in the personalised Victorian plate ‘SCHUE’, which sold unreserved for only $1300.
