Andrea Grant is the first woman to join the Holden Board

Holden has appointed Ms Andrea Grant as the company's new Director, Human Resources. Andrea is the first woman to take a seat on Holden's Board of Directors.

Ms Andrea Grant is based at Holden's head office, design and engineering centre at Port Melbourne, Victoria. She is responsible for industrial relations, setting Holden's organisational development strategy, managing change and developing Holden's capability to deliver on its vision, values and strategic objectives.

"Holden has shown it is determined to achieve diversity, and my appointment certainly highlights this aspect of Holden's culture," Ms Grant said. "I believe HR has an important seat at the table at a time when Holden is an organisation very ready for change.

The majority of Holden employees, who currently number almost 8,000, are production workers involved in the company's vehicle and engine manufacturing operations.

"It's already obvious to me that there is a strong sense of community among Holden employees and a very real sense of pride in belonging to such a globally competitive organisation," Ms Grant continued.

"I want to build on that sense of community and to create a high-performance organisational culture where excellence and outstanding business results are not only recognised and well rewarded, but are the 'norm'.

"When you employ people you get the whole person - with family, personal issues, good times and bad. You can't artificially separate work and the rest of life.

"I would like Holden to differentiate itself as an employer so that it can attract and keep the very best people out there. We want to be seen as a stand-out company by those we want working for us," Ms Grant concluded.

Before joining Holden, Andrea Grant was Human Resources Director of the pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme (New Zealand) Limited.

In 2000, Merck Sharpe & Dohme received the Best Employer - New Zealand award, presented by the NZ government's Equal Employment Opportunity Trust, for its 'Work and Life' initiatives. Based on flexible work practices and with an emphasis on personal development, Work and Life assists employees to balance the demands of personal and business life.

Andrea Grant is the mother of three children. She holds a Bachelor of Education Degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching from Massey University and a Diploma in Finance from the Australian Insurance Institute.
