Land Rover has had a long and successful relationship with the Australian Armed Forces, in particular the Army for over 40 years. Tomorrow July 4th marks a special occasion for one of the Army's specialist units and Land Rover Australia are proud to be partners of this team.
The NORFORCE (North West Mobile Force) unit of almost 600 soldiers surveys the top end of the country safeguarding the security of our vast and precious coastline. Tomorrow they celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the raising of the unit.
Today, NORFORCE operates in an area covering over 1 800 000 square kilometres – around ¼ of the Australian landmass. The area stretches from the Red centre to Broome in the west, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the wetlands of Arnhem Land. The soldiers operate in small groups called patrols and rely on their specialised Land Rover vehicles, small boats and foot patrol to carry out their work.
The NORFORCE group are the most culturally diverse unit in the Australian Army and comprise mainly part-time members of which almost 50% are Aboriginal, with 80% of them coming from remote northern communities.
Land Rover Australia provides the troops with vehicles allowing them to access remote and rugged territory with the reliability and dependability only the Defender can deliver. This is only a small part of the role Land Rover plays in the assistance of the Australian Defence force, having purpose built over 13,000 vehicles during their long and on-going relationship.
