The 2001 New South Wales Road Racing Championships were held last weekend at Sydney's Oran Park circuit. The Championship was run as a one round affair and the weekend started off on a great note for Honda after Alex Gobert took pole in both SuperBike and SuperSport. "Both bikes worked really well during qualifying. The wind was a major problem but the conditions were the same for everyone. I was very happy to score pole on both bikes."
Another Sydney teenager, Josh Brookes, was having his first outing onboard a Honda CBR 600 F4i in SuperSport but was immediately up to speed and qualified on the front row. "Friday free practice was my first outing on the bike so we were under the pump to get things sorted for Sunday's races. I thought qualifying 3rd was excellent for our first go on the CBR."
On race day Alex Gobert was a little uncomfortable on the Fireblade for some reason. "I just didn't feel comfortable enough to push the bike to that extra few tenths that are required to run right up the front so had to settle for two 5th places and a 9th on the SuperBike." Those placings saw Alex end up 6th overall in SuperBike.
"Aboard the 600 in SuperSport things were a little better but my starts let me down a little and I took too long getting up to speed in the races. I did manage to score the fastest lap in the 2nd SuperSport race though and ended up 5th in both races."
Josh Brookes had a great run on the SuperSport bike and finished 2nd in both races. The 18 year old only missed winning the Honda sponsored New South Wales SuperSport Championship by a measly 1 point. "We finished 2nd in race 1 and then worked on the injection mapping to gain a little more power for the 2nd leg. We also made some minor suspension adjustments but once again had to settle for 2nd. Still for our first outing on the bike I think we did very well here this weekend."
Robert Baird won the 2001 NSW FX Unlimited SuperBike Championship from Craig Coxhell and Jamie Stauffer while Wollongong teenager Wayne Maxwell took overall honours in 600 SuperSport.
