For Volvo Car Australia, 2001 was a big year following the successful introduction of the V70, Phase 2 S40 and V40, Cross Country and the S60, Volvo's new mid-size sedan, which by year end had racked up more than 1000 deliveries. Total registrations were up by 17% to 3542.

For 2002, there are important refinements for most models, especially in the areas of performance, safety, appearance, comfort and warranty. In spite of the improvements, Volvo has announced there will be no price increases at model year introduction.

S40 and V40

To reduce deformation in an offset collision, the front part of the floor on the S40 and V40 has been reinforced next to the transmission tunnel. This results in less intrusion in the driver and passenger foot-wells and thus reduced injury.

For the thirsty, there are now two cup-holders in the centre console with two more (optional) in the rear armrest. Radio reception on the V40 has been enhanced with an improved antenna amplifier. There are three new optional alloy wheels and two new colours – Black Sapphire and Bamboo Green.

The compact Volvo line-up has been strengthened with the introduction of a limited edition S40 Sport and V40 Sport offering a range of standard appointments valued at $4580 for only $1000 on the retail price.

S60/V70/Cross Country

New throttle software mapping for all models with turbo engines produces a faster reaction when the accelerator pedal is depressed, resulting in smoother take-off.

The four-channel braking system - each wheel is equipped with a speed sensor making it possible to regulate the brakes on each specific wheel - has been further enhanced by way of new software and a more powerful processor.

On models with Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (S60T5, V70T5), braking has been further improved with the introduction of EBA (Emergency Brake Assistance). EBA determines if the driver is braking under emergency conditions. In this situation, extra brake force is applied and braking distance reduced.

For S60 2.4T and V70 2.4T, Stability and Traction Control (STC) is now active up to 120 km/h.

From January, the Cross Country is also available in a special Volvo Ocean Race Edition of which there are only 50 available. They incorporate a number of special features including Ocean Blue - a colour unique to this model.

There are four new optional alloy wheels for the S60 and V70. The premium sound which is standard on the T5s is now an option on all other variants.

Bi-Xenon High-Intensity Gas Discharge Headlights can be ordered as a factory option for mid year delivery. Volvo's Bi-Xenon lights give almost daylight-level illumination with wider beam and less dazzle.

The choice of Cosmos Blue on the S60 has been extended to the V70.

S80

Volvo's flagship, the S80, has been continuously refined since its introduction in 1998, when it won the NRMA's Best Luxury Car Award in its segment. The S80 is available as an S80 2.9 (naturally aspirated) and an S80 T6 (bi-turbo).

For 2002, the S80 incorporates the same changes as the S60 and V70: new faster throttle characteristics, enhanced four channel braking system, Emergency Brake Assistance (standard with DSTC) and Bi-Xenon lights (factory option).

For 2002, with CVVT now on both inlet and exhaust cams and a higher capacity faster-acting ECU, low speed torque has been improved on the T6.

On the S80 2.9, a new inlet manifold and longer exhaust pipe also help to improve torque at 2700rpm and throughout the mid range.

C70 Coupe and Convertible

The C70 Coupe and Convertible, Volvo's eye-turning two-doors, take the consolidated 2001 engine specification into 2002 – with a high boost turbo engine putting out 176 kW and five-speed automatic transmission engine as standard.

3 year Unlimited Kilometres Warranty

In addition to hardware changes, Volvo Car Australia is introducing from 2002 models onwards, a 3 year unlimited kilometres warranty. This supersedes the 2 year unlimited kilometres warranty. The 24 hour Roadside Assistance, introduced in 2001, continues.
