Proton Cars has returned to television with the announcement that it will again be the feature vehicle on one of Australia's longest running quiz shows.

Proton's all new Waja will be the featured prize on the Seven network's highly succesful afternoon quiz show Wheel of Fortune hosted by Rob Elliott.

The company will return to the show after having been the featured vehicle on the show for three years up until the end of 2000.

According to Proton Cars Australia general manager John Startari the decision was made to return to Seven to increase the awareness of the brand and the new Waja.

"It proved very successful in the past and we felt that after a break last year in which we revised our marketing program and believe that this is an ideal way of reaching our target audience and raising the brand profile," said Mr Startari.

"Program host Rob Elliott has also been a great ambassador for Proton over the years and he is looking forward to getting behind the wheel of a Waja now that we are back on board," he added.

Proton's Waja is the first car designed and engineered in, Malaysia utilising the vast R&D facilities of Proton and subsidiary company Lotus.

The Waja went on sale in November through Proton's network at a recommended retail price of *$27,990 for the Waja 1.6 and *$29,990 for the Waja 1.6X.

The Waja 1.6 includes ABS anti-lock brakes, traction control, four SRS airbags, air-conditioning, power windows, central locking, power remote control mirrors, premium CD/AM/FM audio system and steering wheel audio controls all as standard equipment.

Along with the same standard equipment as the Waja 1.6 the 1.6X model will also include full leather trim, climate control air-conditioning and remote control foldback mirrors.

Proton engineers have benchmarked this car against the world's best C class sedans from the Opel Vectra to the Honda Accord and Audi A4.

The result is a car which can hold its own in what is an impressive line-up of automotive engineering not only in ride and handling but also in terms of safety and body integrity.

The Waja out-pointed the cars it was benchmarked against in eight different ride and handling tests including ride comfort, cornering, body control, steering response, linearity, lane change and wheel control.

The Waja is available initially with a 1.6 litre 16 valve engine producing 76 kW of power and 140Nm of torque with either a five speed manual transmission or a four speed "fuzzy-logic" automatic.

The Waja will feature an extensive range of standard equipment including front and side airbags for driver and front seat passenger, air-conditioning, power steering premium sound system, power windows and leather trim.

Proton will continue to operate its three factory owned proton cars Direct Showcases in Sydney along with a dealer network of approximately 30 outlets around the country to market the Waja.

All Protons, including the Waja, benefit from the extensive Customer Protection program that includes a three-year/one million-kilometre warranty and a 5-year anti-corrosion warranty as well as 24 hour roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty.

The Waja will also feature a seven-year warranty on body corrosion.

*Prices do not include on-road costs. Automatic transmission adds $1850.
