New from the ground up, the next-generation, mid-size Mazda6 is the first of a fresh range of Stylish, Insightful and Spirited models from Mazda.
Sitting on new Mazda designed body architecture and powered by a state-of-the-art, 122 kilowatt, S-VT, 2.3-litre engine, the Mazda6 has been designed and engineered to raise the dynamic benchmark in the midsize car segment.
Benchmarked against more expensive European luxury cars, the Mazda6, which is larger in almost every dimension than the car it replaces, introduces a new level of mechanical sophistication to the class.
It features double wishbone front and a compact multi-link rear suspension and employs new steering and braking systems to ensure it delivers class-leading ride, handling, steering and stopping power.
It also provides world-class safety protection and comes standard with dual stage front airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, anti-whiplash front seats, and side and curtain airbags on some models.
The look of the Mazda6 is new inside and out. The car’s athletic lines, which were penned at Mazda’s Hiroshima headquarters in Japan, will influence the look of all new-generation Mazda models.
With its bold and predatory "face", featuring the family five-point grille dominated by Mazda’s "wings" badge, a crisp beltline, defined wheelarches and striking head and tail lights, the Mazda6 is the style leader in its class.
At 4670mm the sedan and hatch are 80mm longer than before (the wagon is 15mm longer at 4690mm), helping deliver excellent packaging that provides space for five adults and their luggage.
All Mazda6s get a split/fold rear seat, while, hatch and wagon models feature Mazda’s innovative Karakuri fold rear seats.
With a pull of a lever the rear seat, with the headrests in place, folds forward, while the seat base moves forward and down, creating a completely flat load floor.
The managing director of Mazda Australia, Malcolm Gough said: "With the introduction of the Mazda6, we have again demonstrated that great cars lie at the heart of the Mazda brand.
"The Mazda6 sits perfectly alongside the MX-5 and upcoming RX-8.This sophisticated mid-size car delivers the same feeling of oneness between car and driver as our famous sports cars".
"It rewrites the mid-size car rules by delivering world-class dynamics wrapped up in a great looking package that is larger, safer and more refined than its predecessors.
"And it does this while delivering unbeatable value".
To be offered in sedan, hatch and wagon body styles and in Limited, Classic, Luxury and Luxury Sports trim levels, the Mazda6 range is priced from $28,270 for the Limited sedan with manual transmission.
Priced at just $2010 more than the superseded entry-level 626, the Mazda6 has many additional features that add up to more than $2500 in extra value.
Standard features on Mazda6 Limited models includes air conditioning, a CD player, remote central locking with deadlock function, power windows and mirrors, driver’s seat height adjustment and an outside temperature gauge.
Mazda6 has been designed to pass the world’s most demanding crash tests.
All Mazda6 models get ABS anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD); dual-stage front airbags that react to the severity of the crash; an intrusion minimising brake pedal to reduce possible foot, ankle and lower leg injury; a Triple H body structure to maximise side impact protection and anti-whiplash front seats.
Luxury sedan and hatch models and the Luxury Sports hatch come with six airbags that include front side airbags and, for the first time on a Mazda, curtain airbags that when deployed cover the side windows from the A to the rear D pillar.
All three rear-seat passengers get a headrest and three-point seatbelt. ISOFIX child restraint anchor points are also standard.
The Classic sedan, hatch and wagon are priced between $31,705 for the manual sedan and $35,335 for the automatic only wagon.
Standard equipment on Classic models includes a six in-dash CD player, stereo and cruise control switches on the three-spoke, leather-trimmed steering wheel, 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic temperature control air conditioning, a four function trip computer and velour trim.
The trip computer provides readouts for instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, distance to empty and average speed.
The Luxury sedan and hatch, which come with automatic transmission only, are priced at $40,270 and $41,270 respectively.
Luxury models are fully equipped with leather trim, a power sunroof, a power-operated driver seat, seven-speaker Bose stereo system with separate boot-mounted sub woofer and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The range-topping Luxury Sports hatch, which is priced at $41,170 for the manual and $43,250 for the automatic, boasts an aggressive body kit that features a large rear spoiler, side skirts and driving lights.
Mazda6 delivers plenty of Zoom-Zoom, with Australian specification models powered by Mazda’s MZR 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine. The engine produces 31 per cent more power and 14 per cent more torque than the superseded 626 powerplant.
Complete with Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) to maximise power and torque across a broad rev band, the new engine delivers a strong 122kW of power at 6500rpm and 207 newton-metres of torque at 4000rpm. It delivers 90 per cent of its torque from just 1750rpm.
This makes it the most powerful mid-size model offered by Mazda, with the new engine producing one kilowatt more than the superseded 2.5-litre V6 engine once offered in this market segment.
Engine refinement is first class with the new powerplant using a balance shaft that spins at twice the speed of the crankshaft to reduce unwanted NVH characteristics.
The exhaust system – all Mazda6 models feature dual exhaust outlets – has been tuned to give a pleasant, sporty note.
Mazda6 provides a choice of transmissions with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission with, for the first time on a Mazda, Activematic manual gear selection.
Manual models accelerate from 0-100kmh in just 8.9 seconds.
The Mazda6 sits on a new Mazda-developed body architecture and has sophisticated front and rear suspension systems to deliver class-leading ride and handling.
The car employs a multi-link front suspension system that mates double wishbones and a MacPherson strut at each corner.
Both the front suspension and power assisted rack and pinion steering are mounted on a rigid, hydroformed steel frame that ensures communicative, linear steering feel and better suspension control.
This rigid frame also reduces NVH levels and plays a significant role in protecting the passenger cell from frontal impacts.
A compact, multi-link suspension, dubbed E-Type, is used at the back. Once again mounted on a stiff frame, the system’s low-profile springs and angled dampers have managed to almost eliminate intrusion into the cabin, while maintaining comfortable, long-travel characteristics.
The sedan, hatch and wagon sit on a 2675mm wheelbase, which represents an increase of 65mm for the sedan and hatch and a 5mm stretch for the wagon over the superseded models.
Width has increased by 70mm to 1780mm, while the sedan and hatch at 1435mm are 5mm taller than before. The height of the Mazda6 wagon, at 1450mm, has decreased by 40mm over Mazda’s previous midsize model.
The Mazda6 is covered by Mazda’s comprehensive three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
The new generation Mazda6 is the first model to fully embrace Mazda’s Stylish, Insightful and Spirited brand DNA.
Mazda’s new-found brand focus is reflected in the company’s alpha-numeric naming strategy introduced with the Mazda6.
The name puts the emphasis on the primary brand (Mazda) rather than on the car itself.
However, the Mazda6 name has a strong connection with the 626, which gave Mazda Australia a significant competitor in the mid-size market for more than 20 years.
During the past two decades this market has undergone many changes. In the 1980s the midsize four-cylinder segment captured a significant share of overall sales.
But in the 1990s it became fragmented with the arrival of the V6-powered 626 and by the introduction of local six-cylinder offerings from Toyota and Mitsubishi.
The appearance of bigger and better-equipped small cars, such as the 323 in the mid 1990s, put further pressure on the segment, resulting in a relatively stagnant midsize four-cylinder market that in recent years has offered little in the way of fresh and exciting products.
Sales figures show that the midsize market has shrunk from 12 per cent of the overall market in 1994 to just 5 per cent for the first six months of this year.
However, Mazda’s market research, which tracks new car buyer intentions, reveals that the level of interest in midsize cars remains well above sales.
It is safe to assume therefore that would-be midsize car buyers are waiting for the right car, at the right price and with the right level of product flair.
Going beyond the usual market research demographics such as age, gender and family status, Mazda also tracks attitudes to owning and driving cars.
Mazda’s brand DNA, the new products that this philosophy will shape and the popular Zoom-Zoom marketing message, connect most effectively with high involvement buyers that enjoy cars and driving, no matter what life stage they are at.
High involvement buyers in the midsize market – predominately young families and couples – are typically looking for a vehicle that can combine dynamic ability with good packaging and safety.
With little new model activity in the midsize segment in recent years, many of these buyers turned towards the smaller, four-cylinder, car-based 4WDs that while practical, do little to reward car enthusiasts.
Research done in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this year demonstrated that the Mazda6, with its distinctive style, spacious high-quality interior and class-leading dynamics, is seen as offering an exciting solution for high-involvement car buyers looking for a new-generation midsize car.
These buyers regard the Mazda6 as "stylish, sporty, European-looking and sleek".
Mazda’s national marketing manager Martin Benders said: "The Zoom-Zoom campaign, introduced just last year, has raised brand awareness to an unprecedented level and helped push Mazda to record sales.
"With the introduction of the all-new Mazda6 and with the Mazda2 following later this year, Mazda buyers can fully appreciate Zoom-Zoom and the emotion of motion that our new cars will fully deliver."
The research has given Mazda Australia the confidence to predict increased sales, with the company planning to sell about 600 Mazda6s a month compared with an average of 304 a month for the 626 last year.
Mazda6’s class-leading value will play an important role in reaching this sales goal.
Starting at $28,270 for the Limited manual sedan, which is just $2010 more than the superseded entry-level 626, the Mazda6 offers many additional standard features, which add up to more than $2500 in extra value.
Apart from an all-new and larger body and more sophisticated suspension, the Mazda6 Limited has ABS anti-lock brakes, power windows, improved safety features, an outside temperature display and a larger engine that develops 32 per cent more power and 16 per cent more torque than the 626 powerplant.
Standard equipment also includes air conditioning, new dual stage inflation front airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, anti-whiplash front seats, an intrusion mimimising brake pedal, remote locking with deadlock function, driver’s seat height adjustment, CD player, a lap/sash belt and headrest for all rear seat passengers, a split/fold rear seat and twin exhaust outlets.
The Limited sedan is expected to make up 20 per cent of Mazda6 sales.
The Classic sedan, hatch and wagon, which are expected to grab the biggest slice of sales (60 per cent) add climate control air conditioning, 16-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, trip computer, six-stack CD, wheel-mounted stereo and cruise control switches and velour trim.
The wagon also has a retractable cargo net that can either sit behind the rear seats or stretch between the floor and roof behind the front seats when all of the load bay is being used.
Classic sales are likely to be split into 20 per cent sedan, 5 per cent wagon and 35 per cent hatch.
The Luxury sedan and hatch, which come with Activematic transmission, are priced at $40,270 and $41,270 respectively and feature 17-inch alloys, power sunroof, leather seats, upgraded Bose sound system with seven speakers, side and curtain airbags and a power-operated driver’s seat.
These luxuriously-equipped models are expected to represent 15 per cent of the Mazda6 sales mix.
At $41,170 for the manual and $43,250 for the Activematic model, the range-topping Luxury Sports hatch features a new front and rear bumper that incorporates large spoilers, round front fog lamps, rear boot spoiler, side skirts and "straight-through" twin exhaust outlets. The Luxury Sports hatch is likely to attract 5 per cent of Mazda6 buyers.
Overall, 90 per cent of Mazda6 buyers are likely to opt for the Activematic transmission with its manual control mode.
Mazda will also offer a range of dealer-fitted accessories for the Mazda6 including rear parking sensors on all models, while cruise control and 15-inch alloy wheels will be available on the Limited sedan.

The athletic tension in the design of the Mazda6 gives it a progressive and distinctive look that stamps it as a style leader. Inside, its bold T-shaped
dash, complete with contemporary alloy finish, sets a new design direction for Mazda. Bigger and more generously equipped than the car it replaces, it combines great looks with a high-quality, practical, user-friendly interior that offers more than enough space to accommodate five adults and their luggage.
Athletic, Dynamically Balanced Design
The athletic tension in the design of the Mazda6 reflects its Zoom-Zoom spirit – a progressive design with a distinctively Mazda look.
The Mazda6 sets a new design direction for Mazda and the midsize car segment.
In all three body styles – sedan, hatch and wagon – the Mazda6 makes the statement that it has been designed for the purpose of sophisticated driving dynamics and roominess.
The Mazda6's athletic stance is the result of its taut upper body resting on a wider lower body.
Athletic, Predatory Face
The "face" of the Mazda6 is bold and predatory; its aggressive smile says this is
not an ordinary midsize car.
Each headlamp on the Mazda6 contains two projector beams, a parking lamp and indicator set into a fluted chrome housing covered by a clear lens, giving the
Mazda6 its confident and strong front end design.
The tail lamps receive a similar, but slightly more concentric treatment, similar in shape to the interior gauges of the Mazda6. The tail lamps wrap into the side
panels, giving the rear of the vehicle a less pinched, more natural flow.
Some of the distinctive visual features on the new family of vehicles include:
- A five-point grille with a centre-focussed, thick chrome horizontal bar and bold Mazda badge
- Defined beltline and wheelarches
- Shapes and lines consistent between exterior and interior
- The design of headlights, tail lamps, air vents, steering wheel, door handles and shift knob exemplify the unrelenting attention to detail on the Mazda6
The Mazda6 is available with three tyre sizes: 195/65R15, 205/55R16 and 215/45R17 tyres. The Limited sedan comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels.
Two aggressive-looking, five-spoke, aluminium wheels are offered. All Classic variants get 16-inch alloys and Luxury and Luxury Sports models get chunky
17-inch alloy wheels.
The Mazda6 is available in 12 colours: Silver Contrail, Titanium Grey, Blue Pacific, Strato Blue, Garnet Red, Sparkling Silver, Grace Green, Black, Snow Flake White Pearl, Classic Red, Arctic White and Canary Yellow.
Fresh and Spacious Interior Design
The interior design of the Mazda6 reflects the car's global reach. It is designed to
be as innovative as the exterior, giving a completely fresh and dynamic look unique to the class.
Optimising entry and exit and carrying young children and luggage, was
paramount for Mazda6 designers. To address this, the Mazda6 rides on a long
2,675 mm wheelbase and with a wheel-at-each-corner, it gives the Mazda6 an aggressive stance, while providing a class-leading interior package.
At 2675mm, the wheelbase of the sedan and hatch has been increased by 65mm, while the wheelbase of the wagon has increased by 5mm over the superseded models.
At 1780mm Mazda6s are 70mm wider than before, while the height of the sedan
and hatch, at 1435mm, has increased by 5mm. The height of the Mazda6 wagon,
at 1450mm, has decreased by 40mm over Mazda’s previous midsize car.
Engineers spent a great deal of detailed effort to develop an interior with a form
that would follow function, carefully choosing material and colours for a
harmonious design.
This effort led to a roomy, sporty interior with easy to use controls and instruments.
Drivers will find intuitive and easy to use controls on the T-shaped dash.
The concentrated use of oval displays in the vehicle – a shape found in Mazda sports cars of the past – is aesthetically and functionally pleasing, but also enhances safety by improving the visual orientation for the driver, reducing driver/user workload.
The centre dash panel has an alloy finish with chrome accents on the round dials, giving the interior a high-quality, contemporary look.
Chrome rings are used around a large tachometer and speedometer. Interior door handles are finished in semi-gloss chrome to convey strength and precision. Fully closable heating and cooling vents are also circular in design.
To provide information to the driver as clearly as possible, a digital display for the audio, climate control, cruise control, outside temperature and trip computer
readouts is located near the top of the centre dash panel.
Carefully textured materials are used on the full door trim and instrument panel, matching the premium appointments used throughout the vehicle's interior.
The door insets come in either cloth or leather, depending on the model.
The doors feature large, moulded map pockets and bottle holders.
To enhance driving comfort, the three-spoke steering wheel has a thick rim.
Classic, Luxury and Luxury Sports models have a leather-trimmed wheel
complete with remote controls for both the stereo system and cruise control.
Top Quality Sound Systems
All Mazda6 models come with a fully integrated stereo system. The Limited sedan has a 100 watt unit with single CD as well as an AM/FM radio and four speakers.
The system provides separate control for bass, mid range and treble settings.
Classic models add a six in-dash CD player, while Luxury and Luxury Sports models also come with a premium 200 watt, seven-speaker Bose system with a separate
sub woofer mounted under the rear parcel shelf in the sedan and in the spare
wheel well in the hatch.
Interior Spaciousness and Comfort
A clear objective in the design of the new Mazda6 was to maximise the
spaciousness of the interior for the comfort and ease of the occupants, regardless
of size.
The Mazda6 is 50mm wider than many vehicles in the midsize segment and has 1425mm of front shoulder room – 45mm more than the car it replaces.
The extra shoulder room contributes to the feeling of roominess and comfort in this new midsize Mazda car family.
In their efforts to achieve segment-leading interior comfort and spaciousness, Mazda6's designers ensured that rear-seat passengers weren't overlooked.
Not only do they benefit from increased shoulder room, but more importantly, passengers in the rear have more knee room.
Rear seat knee clearance in the new Mazda6 is a generous 61mm – more
knee room than some vehicles in the next larger vehicle class – giving rear-seat passengers a comfortable seating position for relaxed, long-distance cruising.
Damped assist handles for all three passenger doors provide assistance during
entry and exit.
In The Driver’s Seat
Mazda's objective was to design a vehicle that develops a "oneness" with drivers.
Extensive effort in the design and ergonomic engineering of the Mazda6 was
devoted to providing the optimal seating position for the driver.
The adjustability of the seats was an important design consideration.
Great emphasis was placed on developing a front seat that could live up to
Mazda6's performance and handling, while still providing outstanding long distance driver comfort.
The result is a seat design with excellent shoulder, upper pelvis and lower body support.
The driver's seat has a wide degree of adjustability for both length and height.
On Limited and Classic models a wide bar-type handle is easily accessible for adjusting the fore-aft movement of the driver's seat. Its range is a generous
260mm, helping Mazda6 accommodate a broad range of body shapes.
The driver seat also is height adjustable, with an easy to operate, ratchet-type
lever on the outboard edge of the seat cushion standard on Limited and Classic models. The seat ratchets higher or lower – a range of 55 mm – in small increments.
Luxury and Luxury Sports versions come with a driver’s seat with power seat height, fore/aft and seat back adjustment.
The Mazda6 driver can adjust the rake of the three-spoke steering wheel through
a range of 45mm for the best position of comfort and control.
The layout of the pedals has been selected to enhance the driver's feeling of oneness with the new Mazda6, while the operation of each pedal provides a reassuring feel that reflects the vehicle's dynamically responsive acceleration and braking capability.
Other controls have been ergonomically designed and positioned.
The audio controls are mounted high on the centre console for easy driver reach without distraction from the road. Lesser-used controls, such as the heating and ventilation system switches, are mounted lower.
Even the feel and sound of the switch operations have been carefully crafted to match the levels of quality and craftsmanship throughout Mazda6.
Interior Storage Flexibility
Mazda6's interior provides its occupants with plenty of storage places, including
a nine-litre glove box.
The dashboard of the new Mazda6 features a felt-lined upper storage tray that is concealed by a flip-up lid. The tray has the capacity to stow a mobile phone, garage door opener or wallet.
Mazda6's centre console provides several clever storage solutions:
- A large, double-bottomed armrest with integrated coin holder and hinged lid, sits between the front seats.
- The armrest between the two seats opens into another concealed felt-lined storage area.
- Conveniently placed on the passenger side of the console, adjacent to the parking brake lever, is a lid that flips open to reveal two large cup holders, each capable of holding a 500ml drink bottle.
Door pockets for the driver and front-seat passenger feature large bins that include
a drink holder capable of holding a 500ml bottle.
Mazda6's driver also has access to a sunglasses compartment low on the
right-hand-side of the dash.
Rear passengers have a fold-down, centre armrest with built-in cup holders.
Cargo Spaciousness
The new Mazda6 offers excellent boot space in all three body styles.
The sedan’s boot has a 500 litre capacity, while the Mazda6 hatch (492 litres)
and Mazda6 wagon (505 litres with the rear seats in place) have similarly generous luggage capacities.
All three models benefit from the Mazda6’s innovative chassis design, which eliminates the intrusion of strut towers into the cargo compartment. This clever approach gives the Mazda6 family of vehicles a wide load floor of 1,063mm for
the wagon and hatch model. The sedan has a load floor width of 1,016mm.
The Mazda6 wagon, with a total cargo volume of 1,712 litres with the seats folded down, features a tonneau cover to conceal the cargo area contents from onlookers.
A package tray performs the same duty on the hatch.
To ensure cargo remains restrained at all times, the wagon comes with a roll-up mesh cargo net that fixes to the roof behind the rear seats or from the floor to the
roof when the second row seat has been folded flat.
Additionally, the wagon's cargo area features a covered underfloor compartment
to provide out-of-sight storage of smaller items. The wagon features four upper and four lower hold down hooks to further help keep cargo in place.
And, the Mazda6 doesn't penalise its sedan owners' cargo capacity as some competitors in the midsize segment do.
Thanks to a smart, double-link hinge design for the Mazda6 sedan boot lid, the
entire hinge mechanism is contained outboard of the luggage compartment.
The damped hinge folds neatly into the gutter area under the edge of the trunk lid, preventing luggage and other large items from being damaged by the hinge.
This makes all of the sedan’s 500 litre boot capacity usable space.
Innovative thinking from Mazda has given Mazda6 even more flexibility to carry bulkier cargo.
Its 60/40 seat back design allows the customer to fold down one section of the
rear seat to accommodate longer items, like skis, without sacrificing the entire
rear seating section.
The Karakuri Fold
The name comes from a traditional Japanese wind-up children's doll, called a Karakuri, which inspired a true innovation in the flexibility and ergonomic excellence of Mazda6's luggage capacity.
Hatch and wagon models feature what Mazda engineers have called a Karakuri
fold.
With the pull of a handle at rear of the vehicle and without removing the rearseat headrests, the seat folds, while the seat base moves forward and down, creating
an entirely flat load floor from the rear of the vehicle forward to the back of the front seats.
And one simple pull brings it back into position when the extra space is no longer required.
Sedans also feature a one-touch, split/fold rear seat.
Using new body architecture, a new 122kW engine, a new braking system
and sophisticated double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension,
the Mazda6 has been engineered to set the dynamic benchmark in the
medium car market.
All-New Body Architecture
Mazda6’s body architecture is slightly wider than the previous generation of midsize vehicles. That extra width contributes significantly to Mazda6's solidity and stability.
Its confident stance reflects a widening of the wheel track by 50mm. The extra width effectively drops the Mazda6's centre of gravity by 20mm, a significant measure
in shaping the stability of the vehicle's handling characteristics.
The new geometry and intelligent engineering of the body architecture moved its yaw axis to the middle of the vehicle. The yaw axis is a theoretical vertical axis on which the chassis responds to driver inputs.
Front Suspension and Steering Systems
At the front, Mazda6 features a high-mounted, double wishbone with MacPherson strut suspension and a friction-optimised rack-and-pinion steering system mounted on a rigid perimeter frame for extreme rigidity and isolation of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
The design of the front suspension system geometry is central to Mazda6's linear steering, handling precision and straight-line stability.
The perimeter frame itself required a design with high levels of stiffness that would contribute not only to handling characteristics and steering precision, but would
also provide ideal NVH-isolation and crash safety properties.
To meet these complex design requirements, the perimeter frame uses ultra-stiff, hydroforming technology.
The perimeter frame is attached to the Mazda6 body structure with four complex, rubber-and-steel composite, duplex mounts. This carefully engineered design achieves robustly stiff connections without transmitting road vibrations into the
body structure that could compromise the quietness and comfort of the Mazda6 passenger compartment.
Mazda6's tall, double wishbone configuration – with double lower pivots – minimises negative road inputs for optimal stability. This style of suspension features only
a slight offset from vertical in the relationship between the kingpin and the wheel centre, ensuring optimal tyre-to-road contact.
The lower wishbone features one straight lateral leg and a longer, bow-shaped leg that curves from the wheel hub carrier to the perimeter frame at a 45-degree angle. Both legs are mounted to the perimeter frame via bushings that have been tuned to provide lateral stiffness (for precise handling and steering) and longitudinal compliance, for ride comfort.
At the hub carrier end, the lower wishbone legs are connected with low-friction ball joints. Their ultra-smooth ball surfaces contribute to Mazda6's precise, linear
steering response.
With similar compliance and friction-fighting characteristics, the upper wishbone system has two inboard bushings and one ball-joint connection to an arc-shaped vertical link to the hub carrier.
The MacPherson struts feature offset springs to compensate for the slightly off-vertical damper angle. This helps reduce friction that could compromise handling characteristics and lead to premature wear. The struts feature built-in rebound spring dampers for improved roll motion and roll stiffness. The tall design allows longer suspension travel.
The suspension system also features a large diameter front lateral stabiliser bar.
It is mounted to the suspension via ball joint drop-links and to the perimeter subframe.
All Mazda6 models feature standard power-assist steering. The hydraulic power steering system is optimised for low-speed steering effort and progressively direct responsiveness at higher speeds.
The Mazda6 has a tight 10.8m turning circle and the steering has just 2.75 turns
lock-to-lock.
New E-Type Multi-link Rear Suspension
Mazda6's E-Type multi-link rear suspension delivers great ride and handling, while achieving a low-profile design that contributes to Mazda6's voluminous luggage capacity.
Mazda engineers created an under-floor rear suspension system for the new Mazda that would not intrude into the luggage compartment.
The Mazda6 rear suspension features low-profile springs and angled dampers
that solve the packaging issue without compromising handling capabilities.
Mounted to a rigid subframe, the suspension system is characterised by its long suspension travel, its self-levelling capability and its compliance management.
Like the front suspension system, every detail of the rear suspension has been optimised to achieve demanding targets for lateral stiffness and longitudinal "give"
for ride comfort over uneven or bumpy road surfaces.
The Mazda6 suspension was engineered for a controlled but comfortable ride.
For that reason, the vehicle's rear suspension travel is long, 100mm upwards
and 110mm downwards, for a total of 210mm.
The pressed steel trailing arm linkage features a rubber pivot bushing that helps isolate bump harshness. The rear suspension design also includes a dual jounce bumper format.
The low-profile angle of the rear damper was a technical challenge. The optimal angle was determined to be 30 degrees, and extensive effort was devoted to manage friction in the angled configuration and to assure very stiff mounting points for rear dampers into the body structure.
The design of the damper mount also provided two side benefits. It allows the rear frame rails to be of a straight design for enhanced resistance to side impact collision forces, and the mounting design enhanced road vibration isolation.
The body structure was further enhanced in the rear for optimal suspension performance. A robustly-designed inner wheelhouse structure was created, reinforced with high-strength steel gussets to aid the rear-end structure in resisting lateral and torsional bending forces.
Strong mounting points in the body were also provided for the rear suspension subframe itself.
The tubular steel fabricated subframe is attached by four rubber mounts, chosen
for their ability to isolate road harshness.
Braking System
A class-leading braking system with outstanding response and linear feel has been delivered on the Mazda6.
The Mazda6 comes equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. An anti-lock braking (ABS) system with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) is standard across the range. All models have ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear.
Using advanced computer software and driver evaluation clinics, Mazda developed
a brake system that delivers confident stopping power under all conditions.
At the conclusion of rigorous testing procedures, involving 10 repeated
100 km/h-to-zero stops, Mazda6 achieved a class-leading stopping distance of
37 metres.
Pedal ergonomics were factored into the development of the brake system for the Mazda6. Key adjustments were made to pedal height, angle, size and the amount of free play to ensure confident, comfortable braking. The same approach was taken with the parking brake to ensure the effort needed to engage the system was smooth, uniform and low in resistance.
Wheel and Tyre Combinations
The entry level Mazda6 Limited comes standard with 195/65R15 tyres mounted
on a 15-inch steel wheels. Classic models offer 16-inch alloys with 205/55R16 tyres,
while Luxury and Luxury Sports models get chunky 17-inch alloy wheel with 215/45R17 tyres.
A Zoom-Zoom Powertrain
At the heart of the Mazda6 beats a new, modern powertrain that exemplifies
Mazda's spirit of leadership and innovation.
Mazda Motor Corporation's new family of MZR four-cylinder engines, of which
the 2.3-litre with Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) is the most powerful, establishes Mazda as Ford Motor Company's centre of excellence for all large I-4 petrol engine development.
The all-aluminium, DOHC, 2.3-litre engine, which is standard across the Australian line-up, develops 122 kilowatts at 6500rpm and 207 Newton-metres at 4000rpm,
with 90 per cent of the engine’s torque available from 1750rpm.
This makes it the most powerful powerplant ever offered by Mazda in the mid-size segment in Australia. The new engine develops one kilowatt more than the 2.5-litre V6 engine once offered by Mazda in this market segment.
Refinement levels are first class with the engine coming standard with a balance shaft to minimise NVH.
Choice Of Transmissions
The new 2.3-litre MZR engine is available with a four-speed automatic transmission with an Activematic Transmission Control System to provide manual gear selection.
Mazda’s G5M five-speed manual gearbox, with gear ratios matched to the engine’s torque curve, helps deliver quick acceleration and quiet cruising.
High Technology 2.3-litre MZR Engine
Among the key objectives for the new 2.3-litre engine was achieving more torque, power and smoothness, while delivering improved fuel economy, lower emissions and minimal maintenance requirements. The new engine hits all of these marks, thanks to the use of lightweight aluminium, innovative engineering, such as S-VT,
a balance shaft and keen attention to detail.
Mazda's S-VT allows the point at which the engine's valves open and close and the duration they stay open to change with operating conditions, such as engine speed and air volume. Varying these parameters allows the engine to operate more efficiently at all engine speeds.
Located under the crankshaft, the balance shaft minimises vibration by rotating
at twice the speed of the crankshaft and offsetting the secondary inertia force of the rotating system. The balance shaft is fitted in its own housing and attached to the cylinder block for optimum positioning. It is driven by a gear to reduce drive losses.
To achieve the aggressive targets of improving torque, power and smoothness, Mazda engineers also focussed on several other areas.
Engineers developed a sophisticated new friction-welded nylon intake manifold
with equal length runners that incorporate swirl control valves. Mazda engineers
fitted these specially designed control valves into each of the intake runners, close
to the cylinder head flange.
These valves or "tumble flaps" in the variable induction system are controlled by
a solenoid actuator and are closed during light-load operations, such as idling at traffic lights, gear shifting and deceleration, to maximize combustion efficiency,
fuel economy and emissions performance.
The valves are fully open during higher load conditions, roughly 5,000rpm,
to maximize volumetric efficiency and power output.
The design of the intake manifold improved engine sound quality by emphasising
the even-order engine harmonics – a key to the equal length design.
This innovative intake manifold design is further enhanced by the careful design
of the air cleaner system. Mazda's air cleaner does more than simply clean the air. The system features a performance-tuned, bell-mounted, cold-air pickup duct at
the very front of the vehicle, a large noise, vibration and harshness-tuned resonator in the wheel-arch and "organ pipes" designed to selectively feed back a sporty
sound to the driver under fast acceleration.
To reduce engine back-pressure and to ensure quick catalyst warm-up efficiency, Mazda uses a fabricated stainless steel exhaust manifold design with welded tubes. Unlike a conventional cast iron constructed exhaust manifold, the stainless steel exhaust manifold delivers low-heat retention in normal operation. A typical four-cylinder exhaust manifold funnels into a single pipe and then into the catalyst.
In the Mazda design, a heat-insulating layer surrounds the portion where the four runners meet and a divider plate is located longitudinally in the exhaust pipe.
This arrangement combines the heat retention benefits of a single pipe structure
with the engine performance benefits of a dual-pipe structure. This concept of heat management allowed Mazda to simplify the rest of the exhaust system and eliminate the need for a close-coupled catalyst.
Eliminating the close-coupled catalyst and locating it under the floor, reduces engine back pressure, helping improve real-world performance and high speed fuel economy.
High quality stainless steel materials also were used for the extended service life
of the muffler system, which has been tuned for a sporty sound quality under high-load driving conditions. All Mazda6 models have two exhaust outlets, one on either side at the back of the car.
The 2.3-litre engine also features a new, more powerful engine management computer module.
Lightweight Aluminium Construction
Mazda's 2.3-litre engine is made of a lightweight, all-aluminium alloy construction
that helps deliver superior performance and fuel economy.
Each four-cylinder begins life as a precision gravity sand-cast cylinder block of high-grade aluminium alloy with cast-iron cylinder sleeves cast directly into the block.
An aluminium alloy, ribbed ladder-frame structure, which carries the bottom bearing braces, mates to the cylinder block for optimised stiffness.
Low friction-coated, lightweight alloy pistons with sinter-forged connecting rods
for dimensional accuracy and fraction-split ends are used for a precision fit that enhances reliability and reduces noise and vibration.
Cylinder head construction is of aluminium-silicon alloy – thermally treated for strength and durability after the casting process – with an asymmetrical, four-valves-per-cylinder design.
The double overhead cams are driven by a hydraulically-tensioned silent chain drive, actuating the valves via mechanical tappets. Unlike previous-generation Mazda engines, the tappets are precision-fitted during assembly and require no shimming. The intake and exhaust valves are nitrogen treated for durability.
Designed for Long Running Life and Low Maintenance
The design of Mazda's new four-cylinder engine incorporates the latest measures
for long service life and lower maintenance requirements. For example, the chain drive requires no maintenance over the life of the engine.
And during scheduled maintenance, the valve lash no longer requires inspection. This has been accomplished through the reduction of actuating forces through
weight optimisation elements such as the valves and tappets; precision cam contouring to avoid excessive contact forces, and the selection of optimal geometry and materials for moving parts and valve seat rings. Such attention to detail helps
to bring down the lifetime maintenance cost for the owner.
The Mazda6 has been designed to meet the world’s toughest safety standards, backing up its first-class levels of active safety with a comprehensive list
of secondary safety features that have never been seen on a midsize Mazda. These include dual-stage front airbags, anti-whiplash front seats, an intrusion minimising brake pedal and on Luxury and Luxury Sports models, front side and curtain airbags.
Designed to World-Class Safety Standards
Strong, solid and smart, the new Mazda6 delivers world-class crash protection technology. It has been insightfully engineered to meet or exceed crash safety
standards in all major world markets.
New Dual-Stage Airbags Head Safety Features
New dual-stage front airbags, which are standard across the range, give Mazda6
the ability to customise the deployment of its passive safety protection for the
driver and front-seat passenger.
Using an advanced Crash Zone Sensor at the front of the vehicle to determine
the type and severity of the frontal impact, a control module deploys the front
airbags as necessary for optimal occupant protection.
The driver's airbag, which deploys from the centre of the steering wheel cover, expands rapidly to its 45-litre capacity. A second deployment, if necessary under crash circumstances, can be timed simultaneously or after the initial firing.
The passenger-side airbag – 110 litres in capacity – has the same capability
for tailored deployment. It deploys upward from the vehicle dashboard.
Dual-stage airbags are part of a system of up to six airbags in the new Mazda midsize car family.
Curtain airbags on Luxury and Luxury Sports models, increase the head protection
of front and rear-seat occupants in the event of a side impact. The new curtain airbags deploy from the outboard edge of the headliner to cover the side windows from the A-pillar to the D-pillar. Each quilted curtain airbag has a 16.5-litre capacity.
A sensor in each side pillar of the vehicle determines the deployment of side-impact airbag protection, including both the side curtain airbags and the side airbags.
The side airbags deploy from the outboard edge of the front seatbacks, inflating
to their 7.0-litre capacity for thorax protection of the front-seat occupants.
Additional side-impact protection is provided in the form of foam bolsters in the
door panels that increase the protection of the hip area of the driver and front-seat passenger.
The seatbelt package of the Mazda6 is designed to contain each vehicle's
occupants safely inside the protective body cabin and to position them for the
best airbag protection.
The front seatbelt features pyrotechnic pretensioners on the reel end of the belts.
In the event of a moderate or greater frontal impact, these pretensioners take up
the slack of the seatbelt. Load-limiting retractors then play out a measured amount
of webbing to modulate the pressures on occupants' chests during the force of the collision.
Rear-seat passengers have three-point seatbelts and headrests in all three positions.
Interior trim materials of the new Mazda6 have been designed to provide further protection for the occupants. These soft-plastic protective trims, for the side pillars and outer roof joints, protect the occupants' heads from striking sharp edges.
Anti-Whiplash Seat Design
The seats of the Mazda6 also play a significant safety role.
All Mazda6 models feature a new anti-whiplash front seat design. The seatback
has been carefully designed to reduce the abrupt, rearward lurching motion of the head that can cause the neck extension injury commonly known as whiplash.
The supportive springs of the seatback help to control rearward body motion while
a new-style headrest – positioned closer to the occupant's head – provides more effective restraint against the rearward motion of the occupant's head.
Rear seats in the Mazda6 have a robustly strong seatback understructure to resist the potential for luggage to protrude into the passenger compartment in the event
of a frontal impact. The structure includes welded tubular reinforcement.
Pedal Prevents Leg Injury
Mazda6 also provides additional protection to the driver from the potential of lower leg injury.
In a collision severe enough to force the lower body structure into the footwell area, Mazda6's new pedal design moves the brake pedal away from the driver's foot to prevent up to 80mm of pedal intrusion that could cause a foot, ankle or lower leg injuries.
ISOFIX Child Restraints
The rear seat of the sedan, wagon and hatch features two sets of ISOFIX anchor bars. These anchors provide a firm point of attachment for the base of an ISOFIX child safety seat, making it easier to install correctly.
The child seat is further secured by a top tether strap. Together, the anchor base
and top tether form a robust, parent-friendly system to optimise the protective capabilities of the child safety seat.
The top tethers are located on the rear parcel shelf on the sedan and on the base
of the backs of the rear seats on the hatch and wagon.
Triple-H Safety Cell
Mazda6's Triple-H body architecture has been carefully designed to provide a strong structure for the safety of its occupants.
Named for three H-shaped sections of the body structure that are central to its ability to channel crash energy, the Triple-H architecture of the Mazda6 is an intelligent engineering approach to occupant protection. It is part of a broad focus on creating
a rigid occupant protection shell surrounded by energy absorbing structures.
Created by Mazda's proprietary engineering concept, the three interconnected
H elements of the Mazda6 architecture are:
- The side of the occupant cell, with a highly reinforced B-pillar joining
a stiffness-optimised roof ridge and a strong lower sill
- The roof structure, with a strong crossbeam, that connects to the top of
the B-pillars and roof sills
- The floor, with a stiff crossmember joining the two lower sills. Mazda 6's
sill section is wide and strong, optimised for the right combination of strength
and crush properties.
- The B-pillar structure is significant in the Triple-H architecture.
Different gauges of metal, joined by laser welding, tailor the B-pillar's capability
to protect the vehicle occupants. Its lower section is designed to crush predictably and absorb side impact energy while reducing the chance of the centre section deforming to cause injury.
The base of each B-pillar is wide, helping to reduce the chance of doors intruding
into the occupant compartment during an impact. This is also aided by a wide, tall sill section at the base of each rear door.
World-Class Frontal Crash Protection
Mazda6's front structure also provides multiple paths for crash energy and smart features that react to differing frontal impact situations.
The objective of the front structure of the car is to absorb crash energy before
it reaches the occupant cell and redirect remaining energy away from the passenger compartment.
The rigid perimeter beam that supports the front suspension and steering components is a key aspect of the crash energy management system. Fabricated
of 2mm hydroformed steel, it forms the beginning of Mazda6's lower energy path
that eventually flows into the strong lower sill.
In a full frontal crash, with its short, sharp pulse of energy, absorption is the key
role of the perimeter beam. In such an incident, the beam pushes back into a softer section of the B-frame of the vehicle floor.
In an offset frontal crash, the energy the vehicle must manage is entirely different, and the perimeter frame plays an entirely different role. In an offset impact the perimeter frame contacts the highly rigid side sill structure to provide strength
against the longer-duration crash forces pulsing diagonally through the structure. This reduces the rearward movement of the perimeter frame into the B-frame to better protect the occupants.
Further frontal energy absorption is provided by the side rail of the Mazda6 architecture. It protrudes forward from the lower sill with a low kick-up angle of 32 degrees. This low angle is critical to transmitting frontal energy forces downward
into the sill section rather than into the occupant compartment.
Joining the front ends of the side sills, a bumper beam provides two unique roles.
In a low-speed impact, it absorbs energy to protect the more complicated body structure from being damaged. This in turn helps to minimise the repair costs of
the new Mazda6.
In a higher-speed collision, the bumper beam becomes an integral part of the
energy management architecture.
Further aiding the distribution of frontal energy is a robustly strong lower cowl
beam. This beam plays a key role in distributing some frontal energy laterally,
in three directions, away from the occupants.
At the rear, the architecture also plays a dual role of absorbing and channeling
crash energy. Here, the shape of the lower rail reinforcements provides initial crush absorption and then higher levels of rigidity to direct energy forward. Forward pulsing energy can dissipate along as many as three rigid crossmembers in the Mazda6 structure.
Class Leading Braking
Mazda6 provides its driver with an increased capability to avoid accidents, using
an array of active safety features such as agile handling, precise steering and robust braking.
Mazda6's braking capabilities are class leading.
The Mazda6 is equipped with four-wheel-disc brakes. At the conclusion of rigorous testing procedures involving 10 repeated 100 km/h-to-zero stops, Mazda6 achieved
a stopping distance of 37 metres, better than some premium German sedans.
Mazda's four-wheel, anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) system, which is standard across the Mazda6 range, controls
the front wheels independently and the rear wheels in tandem during heavy
braking – to improve vehicle control.
The ABS with EBD system employs dynamic proportioning to achieve shorter stopping distances. EBD works by measuring braking force versus traction and allocating brake force to wheels that have the best grip for stopping even before
the ABS system activates. This advanced system helps reduce the braking distance by using the right level of brake modulation for robust stopping and occupant comfort.
Mazda6 Craftsmanship
The development of the new Mazda6 is filled with examples that reflect Mazda's unrelenting focus on raising the bar of craftsmanship for the very demanding expectations of today's sophisticated midsize car customer.
From its dynamic exterior design to its spacious, comfortable interior, Mazda6
is clearly crafted with materials of a consistently high quality. Underneath its taut, sculpted skin, Mazda6 is insightfully engineered to deliver on that craftsmanship promise.
Fit and Finish Finesse
The structure of the new Mazda6 is the first indication that this new body
architecture is engineered for even higher levels of manufacturing precision.
The latest techniques for precise body assembly help to ensure that Mazda6
has even tighter and more consistently narrow gaps between key body panels.
A gap of only 1.5mm is all that separates the headlamp unit from the front bumper edge. A similar gap conveys the precision fit of the rear bumper where it joins
the rear guard.
On the interior, the same attention to detail has been applied.
For the new Mazda6, Mazda did away with the old style of instrument panels,
which featured separate audio units and heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) systems that would be installed into the panels. This style of construction has inherent challenges in terms of build precision, with the potential for irritating gaps, squeaks and rattles.
Instead, the centre panel of the Mazda6's T-shaped instrument panel is one integral unit that is assembled and installed as one piece.
The centre panel architecture provides one smooth finish. Using "plug and play" inspiration, different components, like the radio and CD-player systems and HVAC controls and ducting, are robustly installed into the centre panel module during sub-assembly. All the customer sees is the functionality in a clean, consistently applied alloy-style finish.
This attention to detail had an interesting side benefit in addition to the higher build quality it offered. Because the audio system controls could be stretched over a wider
area of the centre instrument panel, the buttons and displays were not restricted to
the small, ergonomically challenging size of traditional audio units. This gives the Mazda6 audio system controls a larger and more convenient look and functionality that either front-seat occupant can share.
It’s All In The Detail
Astonishing engineering effort was focussed even on seemingly small aspects of
the Mazda6. The door operation alone featured a multi-faceted series of initiatives:
- To optimise the effort of opening and closing the doors of the new vehicle, volunteer subjects were wired with electrodes to measure every muscle movement required. As a result, Mazda6's door handles are positioned
at the height of minimal muscular load
- The door handle itself was crafted through extensive study of the finger pressures involved in operating various handle designs
- The sound of the door closing was studied for both its machine characteristics – such as the force involved in the closure – and the human characteristics –the sound level and sound quality apparent to the listener. Mazda engineers applied "psychoacoustics" principles to the study and established targets
for the right sound
- The speed of closing the door was scrutinised and a target closing speed
of less than 1 millisecond was achieved in the new Mazda6
- The structure of the door latch was subjected to intensive engineering study
to optimise its operating force and closing robustness. The new Mazda6 features a low-friction latch design as a result
- The weather strip sealer around the perimeter of the door frame was improved to reduce closing efforts. The new design helps reduce the maximum air pressure in the cabin resulting from closing a door
That Quiet Quality
Mazda6 also communicates its quality and craftsmanship aurally. From its quiet, comfortable, ride to the details of every switch and button, Mazda6 reflects careful attention to detail.
The sound quality of the Mazda6 also results from a multi-faceted effort by development engineers:
- Powertrain noise was relentlessly attacked in the technology of Mazda6's
new 2.3-litre MZR engine. The new engine with its Sequential-Valve Timing (S-VT) technology brings new levels of refinement to its class
- Wind noise was attacked with aerodynamic precision in Mazda's wind tunnel. The shape of Mazda6's body, and the sophistication of its NVH package, helps isolate wind noise from the vehicle occupants.
- The potential for road noise and vibrations to be transmitted into the vehicle was countered on every potential path. Detailed work went into the optimisation of the bushings and mounts of the suspension systems front
and rear.
And, because sound is more than noise, Mazda engineers also concentrated on
the quality of the sounds that Mazda6 owners would hear
Complex intake manifold and air intake system designs in the powertrains were fine-tuned to provide a unique sound quality of the engine.
Every pushbutton, every handle and every lever was engineered to produce a sound quality that matched its precise look and operational feel. This attention to detail
of touch, feel, sound, look and function is what adds up to the total perception
of craftsmanship.
