Coming hard on the heels of the successful launch of the Kia Pregio 1.2
tonne van, Kia has added the K2700 light truck to its rapidly growing
commercial vehicle range.
Like the Pregio, the K2700 offers spectacular value for money from all
angles, with a highly competitive price of $22,500.
This includes a big 2.7 litre diesel engine, a 1.5 tonne payload, a full
standard equipment list, a comprehensive warranty with three years/100,000
km and 24 hour roadside assistance and loan car programme should the K2700
be off the road for more than 24 hours with a warranty issue. And, as if
this was not enough, the Kia K2700 offers the option of a strong steel tray
top, fully factory fitted, for just $800.
"Our decision to be aggressive with the positioning of the Pregio in the
market place has been rewarded with sales of more than 100 a month, well
above our planned target, and with the K2700 we are pursuing the same
policy," says Ric Hull, Managing Director of Kia Automotive. The K2700
enters its market sector with a highly competitive package, a tough, modern
design and we believe that it will follow in the Pregio's footsteps to
become one of the top selling vehicles in its category."
The Kia K2700 is an all-new design, which is clearly indicated from its
modern, user-friendly cab, stylish exterior and advanced specification. The
2.7 litre J2 diesel engine produces 62 kW and, more importantly in a
commercial vehicle, a maximum torque of 172 Nm. This is delivered to the
rear axle, with rear double wheels, via a tough five speed manual gearbox
and clutch with a locking system for added strength. For peace and quiet,
the use of curved helical gears, rather than straight cuts gears cuts noise
in the cab by 1.8 decibels.
The tilting cab and drivetrain are mounted on a box frame chassis that
features interlocking 'C' beams and which is made from high strength steel.
This both ensures a long durable life and protects the occupants in the
event of an accident.
The spacious cab with an interior width of 1.6 metres has three seats, with
the centre seat fitted with a folding down back that reveals a desk with a
locker and cup holder. Not that this is the only storage space in the cab,
with a profusion of lockers and pockets in the dashboard and doors. As well
as a four way adjustable driver's seat, the steering wheel is height
adjustable for added comfort. Other comfort features include durable cloth
upholstery, a twin speaker digital CD audio system and electric windows
with one touch operation on the driver's side.
Comfort means that the engine is completely separate from the cab and is
accessed by tilting the cab forward - a quick and easy operation - while
convenience means that all the key consumables may be checked by a lift up
front panel. This means that the cab is completely separated from the heat
and noise of the engine. Subjected to 5000 lift lower tests in field tests
and 20,000 bench tests, the cab tilt mechanism is robust and resilient.
As standard the Kia K2700 comes as a cab chassis, but as an option - and,
at $800, a very reasonable one - a factory fitted tray top is available.
Unlike its aluminum counterparts, the Kia tray top is made from steel,
ensuring a long and durable life. It is 3.1 metres long and 1.65 metres
wide, providing a surface area of 4.7 square metres. As well as three drop
down sides, which use extra long hinges for strength, there are 12 tie down
points on either side of the load area. As well as the tray top, a load
wall made up of six vertical bars separates the load from the cab.
