Renault Australia has won two major categories in the highly esteemed Australias Best Cars awards for 2002.
Renaults popular Clio 1.4-litre hatch claimed the prized Best Small Car award and the prestigious 3.0-litre Laguna Privilege was declared the Best Luxury Car under $57,000.
Australias Best Cars awards combine the expertise of state motoring organizations, including the RACV, NRMA,
RACQ, RAASA, RACT, AANT and the RACWA and are among Australias most sought-after automotive
accolades. Individual category winners are assessed on value for money, design and function and on-the-road
performance and driveability.
Renaults lively 1.4-litre Clio Expression hatch received praise from the judges for its long list of standard features
and safety equipment including four airbags, ABS braking system with electronic brake distribution and
emergency brake assist and four seatbelt pretensioners and for its high levels of comfort and practicality.
Announcing the Best Small Car award, Chief Judge Ernest Litera commented on the Clios excellent on-road
dynamics. "Strong small car performance and respectable fuel economy is delivered by a 1.4-litre 16-valve engine,
but it is the superb European-style ride and handling package that stands out. Precise steering as well as good
brakes give Clio a clear lead in on-road ability."
Judging for the Best Luxury Car under $57,000 award was hotly contested, but Renaults 3.0-litre V6 Laguna
Privilege claimed the title with an impressive score right across the awards judging criteria. According to Mr
Litera, "Laguna scored strongly in many key areas. These included safety, occupant comfort, ride quality, handling,
space, practicality, running and repair costs, standard features and security."
The Laguna Privilege - acclaimed in Europe for its benchmark safety standards - was praised for its comprehensive
equipment levels and the "delightfully smooth and responsive performance of the 3.0-litre V6 engine."
Accepting the awards, Renault Australias Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Leon Daphne,
commented on the companys growing popularity in Australia. "Renault is one of Europes most popular
automotive brands and it is gratifying to see that success being repeated here in Australia. Winning two categories
in the highly respected Australias Best Cars awards certainly underscores this achievement."
"Since our return to the Australian market last year, the Renault Australian line-up has received wide acceptance and
we are very proud to be the first French vehicle manufacturer to be successful in these awards," Mr Daphne said.
