Citroen has produced its millionth Berlingo, the commercial vehicle that has redefined small commercial vehicles and sparked a rash of imitators.
The millionth Berlingo produced since its launch in 1996 rolled of Citroën's production lines in Vigo, Spain in September. The Citroën Berlingo is a dedicated commercial vehicle, unlike its original rivals which were cars with a box on the back, producing a compromised vehicle. The Berlingo with its designed-to-work functionality, offered not just more space and a larger payload, with three cubic metres and an 800 kg load capacity, but unrivalled levels of comfort and performance, with more than a hint of Citroën style. This combination has not proved highly attractive to business users, but also to families looking for value for money transport as a mini-MPV.
Much copied, the Berlingo has just been up-dated and continues to evolve, with the millionaire vehicle being a Berlingo XTR, a new version with a locking differential to help it get across difficult conditions.
