The Alfa Romeo name is synonymous with performance and speed so it is of special significance when a new Alfa Romeo takes over the mantle of being the fastest Alfa Romeo ever produced.

That new car is the Alfa Romeo GTV 3.2 V6 24V which, with a top speed of 255 kmh, is the fastest road going car produced by Alfa Romeo and it is now on sale in Australia.

Powered by the 3.2 litre version of the legendary Alfa Romeo V6 engine that has powered the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA and 156 GTA to such acclaim, the lighter weight and the smaller frontal area of the GTV enables the new version to race ahead of the top speed of its hyper hatch and hot saloon siblings.

The 176 kW of power produced by the 3.2 litre V6 engine is balanced by 289 Nm of torque, the essential ingredient for powerful acceleration, something the Alfa Romeo GTV 3.2 V6 24V offers in each of its six gears. It will dispatch the rush to 100 kmh in just 6.7 seconds, a task that is accompanied by the banshee wail of Alfa's V6 doing what it does best, delivering shattering performance.

Alongside the Alfa Romeo GTV 3.2 V6 24V is a new version of the GTV equipped with Alfa Romeo's benchmark 2.0 litre JTS engine, which boosts both power and torque for the four cylinder version of the GTV, providing it with a top speed of 220 kmh and a 0-100 kmh time of 8.4 seconds. With enhanced mid range punch for the JTS engine, the GTV JTS delivers more performance with less gear changing, as well as improved economy and lower emissions.

But it is not all about performance. Pininfarina, the Italian styling house that designed and styled the GTV has gifted the new GTV with a strong, vital new appearance that enhances the original acclaimed wedge shaped sports cars with the more dominant use of the classic Alfa Romeo shield that is such a strong feature of the present generation of Alfa Romeos.

There are also changes to the GTV's already talented chassis that boost grip, enhance ride comfort and refine handling, while inside, the dashboard has a new trim, there's a new centre console with a new integrated audio system, as well as new upholsteries. Outside the JTS has new alloy wheels and new paint colours are offered across the range.

The GTV JTS has as standard new Alfatex sports cloth upholstery, front seat-belt pretensioners, driver and passenger airbags, electrically-controlled windows and door mirrors, automatic climate control system, remote central locking and check control for door and boot closure, height and reach adjustable three-spoked steering wheel, radio and CD player, power steering, headlight alignment corrector, foglights, electronic immobilizer and new-design 205/50/16" light alloy wheels. The GTV 3.2 V6 24V has the same specification, but with Momo leather upholstery and 225/45 tyres and 17 inch alloy wheels.

Prices for the new GTV open at a recommended retail price of $55,000 for the GTV JTS, with the 3.2 litre V6 engine, the GTV 3.2 24V V6 is $73,500.
