The new Alfa Romeo Sportwagon, a unique combination of style, versatility and Formula One-derived technology, makes its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show this week (2 - 12 March 2000) before arriving in Australia in the middle of the year.

Based on the award winning Alfa Romeo 156 sports saloon, the 156 Sportwagon features a completely redesigned rear end from the B-pillar rearwards. Clearly styled with the same commanding distinction as the original car, the new lines sweep back to a near vertical rear door. But style has not compromised versatility. The rear door opens into the roof, endowing it with the width and height of a sloping rear door, but without the impact on the interior space that would normally be associated with such a door. Nor has the new tail impacted on the aerodynamic performance of the 156, with a Cd of 0.30, the Sportwagon cuts cleanly and quietly through the air.

The new Alfa Romeo model will target the rapidly growing market for vehicles combine the sports orientated performance, strong style and strong image of European sports sedan with the needs of changing lifestyle that requires more flexible space for a young family or for hobbies and sports.

Available in Europe with the full range of engines, the Australian version of the 156 Sportwagon will be launched with the 2.0 litre 114 kW Twin Spark engine with a choice of a five speed manual gearbox or the straight-out-of-Formula One Selespeed sequential manual gearbox.

Full specification and prices will be announced when it is launched.
