Legendary touring car champions Peter Brock and Dick
Johnson will captain rival Holden and Ford teams in the 2004 Shannons
Ford-Holden Challenge rally to Adelaide's Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar street race
from 14-18 March.
The five-day four night Rally, which includes more than 20 performance and
driving skill events is open only to owners of Fords, Holdens and GM vehicles of
all ages, competing in Current and Heritage categories.
The field of around 200 cars, panel vans and utes will travel from Melbourne
via Shepparton, Mildura and the Barossa Valley, arriving just in time for the
four-day Clipsal race programme.
Peter Brock wrote himself into the record books in mid-November when he won
his10th Bathurst, co-driving the red '05' Holden Monaro 427 in the 24 hour
endurance race.
He is the most decorated and versatile Holden driver in history, also winning
the Sandown 500 race nine times, claiming three Australian Touring Car titles
and winning the 1979 Repco around Australia trial outright.
Dick Johnson is an equally legendary Ford figure, as a five-time Australian
Touring Car champion, a three time Bathurst winner and the winner of the Eastern
Creek 12 Hour endurance race.
More good news is that Holden will opened the gates to its normally
top-secret Lang Lang Proving Grounds to entrants in the Challenge, with the
rally's opening events conducted at the facility on Sunday 14 March.
Brock and Johnson will drive unique Holden and Ford cars throughout the
Challenge and will take part in all the event's performance events, ranging from
full-blooded drags, to circuit sprints, acceleration and braking tests and a
drifting contest. A special Show & Shine and a Sound-Off competition will be
other attractions to entrants of both makes.
All Ford and Holden entrants will fight for the Shannons Challenge Perpetual
Trophy for the dominant make, with every competitor's score counting towards
Ford or Holden team result.
Once in Adelaide, entrants will enjoy privileged infield parking at the
Clipsal 500, access to a special Challenge grandstand at the hairpin opposite
the pits leading onto the main straight, while major category winners will enjoy
parade laps of the former Grand Prix circuit.
