Lexus RX330 has become a 2003 Wheels Car of The Year Nominee.
This nomination follows the vehicle's recent win as Australia's Best Luxury Four-Wheel Drive in an award by a judging panel representing the nation's seven auto clubs.
Since its Australian introduction in April this year, the Lexus RX330 has proved a runaway success and now leads the Australian luxury four-wheel drive market sector.
Wheels magazine editor Ged Bulmer said Lexus RX330's luxury, quality, performance and innovation contributed to its selection as a 2003 Wheels Car of the Year nominee.
"Its interior is immaculately crafted and genuinely luxurious - outstanding for the price. Its drivetrain is excellent, with powerful engine and smooth transmission working in complete harmony," he said.
"As well, it introduces useful safety innovations to the Australian market."
In an update to the 41-year-old Wheels Car of the Year award, entry to the week-long test program is no longer automatic for every car launched in the calendar year.
Instead, a panel of Wheels magazine's senior editorial staff nominates only the best new models to go forward to the testing phase.
Fifteen cars have been selected from more than 30 eligible to be judged for this highly respected Australian award.
Wheels has restricted the number of nominees in order to devote its Car of the Year test program to the "most worthy new cars", according to the judges.
2003 has been Lexus' most successful sales year ever in Australia as the luxury marque strengthens its local presence.
"The success of the RX330 is a testament to the heart of Lexus - and an example of where we are headed in the future," said John Roca, senior manager, Lexus Australia.
The winner of the 2003 Wheels Car of the Year award will be announced on January 21, 2004.
