Four years after its launch, Mercedes-Benz is significantly upgrading the
successful C-Class in terms of technology, equipment and design. The suspension,
steering and six-speed manual transmission have a more sporty configuration,
ensuring that the C-Class offers an even more agile driving experience. In
future the C 220 CDI will have an output of 110 kW, which is 5 kW more than
before. With the new 270 kW C 55 AMG Mercedes-Benz is offering an eight-cylinder
unit for the first time in this model series.
The interior of the new C-Class has been upgraded by a new cockpit design
with sophisticated new controls and line-specific seats as standard. The
innovative, more scratch-resistant paintwork based on nano-technology is
likewise standard. Bi-xenon headlamps with cornering light function,
steering-wheel gearshift buttons for the automatic transmission and new
audio/navigation systems round off the highly desirable, high-tech
specification.
Even at standstill the redesigned front end with its bumper, radiator grille
and headlamps conveys the dynamic characteristics of this Mercedes model series,
which is available as a Saloon, Estate and Sports Coupé.
With state-of-the-art technology, good long-distance comfort and sporty
agility, the C-Class has won the hearts of more than 1.26 million drivers
worldwide since 2000. Never before has Mercedes-Benz sold so many vehicles from
one model series in such a short time.
In addition to the sporty and elegant Saloon, the C-Class model family
features the versatile Estate as well as the youthful and agile Sports Coupé.
Mercedes-Benz has now reinforced the well-proven characteristics of the
C-Class with an intensive model facelift, at the same time making new emphases
in terms of dynamism, comfort and perceived value.
Exterior: redesigned front end, wider tyres and more scratch-resistant
paintwork
The more dynamic appearance is above all created by the redesigned front
bumper with its striking, sportscar-like lower air intake and the likewise
redesigned radiator grille, which has three slats, appears wider and therefore
conveys an impression of power. Depending on the model and equipment, these
slats are painted or embellished with a sporty matrix of perforations. In future
Mercedes-Benz is equipping the C-Class with clear-lens headlamps as standard.
An increase in track width from 1493 to 1505 millimetres, 16-inch tyres as
standard and wide-base tyres of size 205/55 R 16 also emphasise the dynamic
appearance of the C-Class. In addition the CLASSIC and ELEGANCE lines are
equipped with the more sporty side skirts and rear bumper of the AVANTGARDE
line.
An even longer-lasting shine is guaranteed by the newly developed, more
scratch-resistant paintwork, which is based on nano-particle technology and
reinforces the legendary long-term quality of Mercedes. This too is standard
equipment.
Interior: new cockpit design and high value impression
Mercedes designers have upgraded the interior of the C-Class with great care
and attention to detail. This is shown not only by the discreet chrome trim on
various controls on the dashboard, but also by newly developed switches and the
modified seat design, which underlines the character of the different lines and
offers even better seating comfort.
Four clearly arranged dial instruments with white lighting in the style of
high-quality chronometers form the centrepiece of the completely redesigned
cockpit. Between the speedometer and rev counter, information appears in a
vertical central display which corresponds to the buttons on the multifunction
steering wheel and allows numerous individual settings to be selected. The form
and function of the air conditioning controls has also been improved: large,
clearly arranged rotary switches make adjustment easier and make a further
contribution to the high-value impression in the interior.
Even the basic CLASSIC model is equipped with new exotic wood trim which
highlights the high-quality appearance of the centre console and transmission
tunnel cladding. In the AVANTGARDE line there is a choice of aluminium or
optional bird’s-eye maple trim.
In addition, the C-Class Sports Coupé emphasises its youthful and dynamic
character with a new three-spoke steering wheel featuring solver-coloured
control buttons, aluminium trim on the centre console and sports seats.
THERMATIC automatic climate control is also standard equipment in the Sports
Coupé.
Chassis: axles, steering and transmission with a sporty configuration
Even more superb handling dynamics are ensured by various technical
modifications to the suspension, steering and manual transmission in the
C-Class. This package of measures, which is known as DIRECT CONTROL, includes
newly developed front and rear axle bearings which provide more agile cornering
with no loss of comfort, a more direct steering ratio and reconfigured standard
and sports suspension systems. The new six-speed manual transmission is now
easier to operate, more precise and has a shorter shift travel.
Engines: higher output for the C 220 CDI
The output of the well-proven four-cylinder diesel in the C 220 CDI has been
increased to 110 kW (previously 105 kW). This engine is equipped with
second-generation common-rail direct injection and runs with exemplary
smoothness by virtue of balancer shafts. Fuel consumption is just 6.1 litres per
100 kilometres (NEDC overall consumption; Estate 6.5 l/100 km).
Thanks to a technically sophisticated, additive-free particulate filter
system the diesel C 220 CDI already meet the EU-4 exhaust emission limits valid
from 2005.
C 55 AMG: new performance standards in this vehicle class
With the new C 55 AMG Mercedes-Benz is offering an eight-cylinder model in
the current C-Class for the first time, thereby entering the performance domain
of thoroughbred sports cars: 270 kW and 510 Newton metres of maximum torque are
previously unattained peak values in this vehicle class. From standstill the new
C 55 AMG accelerates to 100 km/h in only 5.2 seconds, and guarantees sporty
driving pleasure at the highest level with its standard sports suspension and
five-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel gearshift buttons and AMG
SPEEDSHIFT.
Externally the C 55 AMG is distinguishable from the other models in the
C-Class by its striking front-end design, with elliptical twin headlamps and an
approx. 80- millimetre longer front-end structure. This makes it possible to
install the beefy V8 engine. The striking design of the side skirts, boot lid
and rear bumper also emphasises the high-performance character of the
eight-cylinder model. 18-inch light-alloy wheels, tyres in size 225/40 R 18
(front) and 245/35 R 18 (rear), AMG sports seats with Alcantara upholstery and a
decidedly sporty instrument cluster with silver-coloured dials are further
special features of the new C 55 AMG, which replaces the previous C 32 AMG.
Technology: premiere of newly developed cornering light function
The C-Class is reinforcing its reputation as a technology trendsetter in this
market segment with innovations for even more safety and comfort. These include
powerful bi-xenon headlamps, which Mercedes-Benz has combined with a special
cornering light function. This is integrated into the fog lamps, which
illuminate the areas in front of and to the sides of the vehicle over a wide
angle, so that pedestrians and cyclists can be seen more easily when cornering.
Even tight bends are more clearly visible with this system.
From spring 2004 an even more efficient generation of car radios will enter
the C-Class. In addition to the radio/CD combination Audio 20 CD, the
top-of-the-line model COMAND APS is also equipped with a CD player, DVD
navigation, a large colour screen (6.5’’) and four 50-watt amplifiers. SMS
messages and e-mails can also be received and answered with this unit.
The C-Class is now also available with a 320-watt sound system with surround
sound and the voice control system LINGUATRONIC, which operates the car
telephone and numerous audio functions by voice commands. Mercedes-Benz is the
first manufacturer to offer voice control for navigation destinations in this
vehicle class.

Saloon
Super-fit for dynamic driving pleasure
- Expressive design for even more muscular appearance
- 16-inch wheels and 205/55 R 16 wide-base tyres as standard
- High value impression in the interior owing to new cockpit design
Accounting for approx. 65 percent of unit sales, the C-Class Saloon is easily
the most popular model variant in this Mercedes family. Since its debut it has
won the hearts of more than 885,000 male and female drivers worldwide. Most of
these (roughly 41 percent) have decided in favour of the ELEGANCE line, another
26 percent choosing the AVANTGARDE line and 33 percent the CLASSIC line.
In 2000 an extensive package of technical innovations entered series
production in the C-Class Saloon which had previously been unavailable in this
vehicle class, and it still sets standards today. Outstanding features included
in the comprehensive safety concept, which is based on Mercedes accident
research findings: adaptive airbags for the driver and front passenger which are
activated in two stages according to accident severity, sidebags and windowbags,
bent tensioners, belt force limiters, automatic child seat recognition and an
automatic belt attachment reminder are standard safety equipment in this
Mercedes model series. The front-end structure is also configured for real
accident situations by a three-stage protective system which becomes effective
according to the severity of an impact.
The exemplary level of safety for this vehicle class provided by the C-Class
is also confirmed by the results of crash tests according to the European NCAP
standard (New Car Assessment Programme), which this successful Mercedes model
has absolved with an outstanding score. For this reason the Euro-NCAP
organisation has awarded the C-Class Saloon five stars – the highest rating for
this test procedure.
From spring 2004, following an intensive revision, the new generation of the
C-Class will face the future with renewed vigour and remain on the fast lane.
Mercedes-Benz has placed an even greater emphasis on handling dynamics,
long-distance comfort and value impression, and is also offering two new engines
and even more valuable comfort-enhancing extras for the four-door model.
Engines: Even more versatile with the new TWINPULSE powerpack
The unique range of engines and appointments which gives Mercedes customers
enormous scope for fulfilment of their individual wishes will become even more
attractive from spring 2004: there is a choice of six engines including two
four-cylinder petrol engines (C 180 KOMPRESSOR and C 200 KOMPRESSOR), two
high-torque six-cylinder models (C 240 and C 320) one eight-cylinder engine (C
55 AMG) and one direct-injection diesel. The output of the C 220 CDI has
increased from 105 kW/143 hp to 110 kW.
The C-Class saloon can be ordered with one of the three distinctive design
and equipment lines: CLASSIC, ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE.
Front end: more dynamic with redesigned bumper and wider track
Even at first glance the design of the Saloon conveys the significant
improvement in agility and dynamism which further development of the suspension,
steering and transmission has made possible: with its sportscar-like lower air
intake and two prominent wing sections, the redesigned front bumper emphasises
the width of the body and lends a more muscular appearance to the car. This is
reinforced by the wider tyres (205/55 R 16 instead of the previous 195/65 R 15),
which are now on 16-inch wheels (previously 15-inch) with a smaller rim offset,
and the wider front track (1505 instead of the previous 1493 millimetres).
Mercedes designers have also redesigned the radiator grille. The
number of transverse slats has been reduced from four to three, ensuring that
the radiator grille appears wider. Headlamps with clear lenses contribute
additional brilliance to the front-end design – especially the optional bi-xenon
headlamps with which the cornering light function is now available for
the first time.
From the front the three different lines in the C-Class are distinguished by
the colour of the radiator grille, whose slats are for example painted black in
the sporty and progressive AVANTGARDE line.
Side view: sporty elegance
The characteristics of the different lines are even more obvious when viewed
from the side: ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE feature attractive, newly developed
light-alloy wheels as standard, the AVANTGARDE line showing its special
character with a sporty five-spoke design and mixed tyre sizes. The wheel/tyre
sizes in this line are 7J x 16 with 205/55 R 16 tyres at the front and 8J x 16
with even wider 225/50 R 16 tyres at the rear. 17 and 18-inch wheels are
available for all lines on request. The wheel trims of the CLASSIC line are also
in a new design.
As a further distinguishing feature, the ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE lines have a
chrome strip in the new, two-piece waistline trim strip, which is now
also painted in haematite in the CLASSIC line (previously black) and ensures a
high value impression. All the design and equipment lines share the new,
transparent indicator lenses in the mirror housings. In adding this
detail the Mercedes designers have strikingly transferred the brilliant,
high-quality look of the headlamps to the indicator repeaters at the sides.
The muscular side skirts of the AVANTGARDE line now strike a sporty
note in all the design and equipment lines. Their design harmonises with the
rear bumper, whose spoiler-like contour lends a powerful, dynamic
impression to the rear end in all the lines. The rear lights also make a
design statement with their dark-tinted lenses and mirror-polished reflectors,
and emphasise the sporty yet elegant appearance of the Saloon.
Exterior: The major facelifting measures for the Saloon
- Redesigned front bumper with enlarged lower air intake
- ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE: bumpers with chrome strips

Cockpit: instruments in the style of high-quality chronometers
Whereas dynamism and sportiness were the predominant considerations for the
exterior design of the Saloon, for the interior the designers devoted their
facelifting measures to mainly increasing the impression of quality,
incorporating a number of improvements with an attention to detail typical of
Mercedes.
This progress is noticeable immediately on entry: in the cockpit a completely
redesigned Instrument cluster captures the attention. The four dial
instruments with white illumination for the coolant temperature, speed, engine
speed and fuel level are designed for clear legibility and are reminiscent of
high-quality chronometers. Chrome surrounds on each instrument discreetly but
effectively enhance this impression. The indicator lamps are distributed over
the dials of the speedometer and rev counter, but only appear when starting the
engine or in the event of a fault. One addition is the green indicator lamp in
the speedometer, which indicates to the driver whether he has switched on the
standard Headlamp Assist function.
The central display, which is connected to the standard multifunction
steering wheel by a data link and makes numerous individual adjustments as well
as access to a wide range of additional information possible, is divided into
two sections and located vertically between the speedometer and rev counter.
Centre console: newly designed switches and controls
The new design of the centre console likewise conveys the enhanced
value in the interior. Mercedes-Benz has not only modified the shape of the
rotary controls for the ventilation outlets, but also developed new
switches. These lie flush in the upper section of the centre console and
form two groups. This area of the centre console is tastefully framed by
high-quality trim of exotic wood (CLASSIC and ELEGANCE) or structured aluminium
(AVANTGARDE), depending on the line. On request decorative trim in fine
bird’s-eye maple is also available for the AVANTGARDE line.
Separated by a chrome strip, one of the new audio units is
accommodated beneath the array of switches. Two latest-generation systems are
available, whose buttons and rotary controls perfectly harmonise with the design
of the other controls. A third chrome strip embellishes the centre console below
the radio, at the same time separating the third functional area. Here the
driver and front passenger are able to operate the standard automatic climate
control THERMATIC and adjust the fan speed, temperature and air distribution
using redesigned rotary controls. Chrome surrounds on the controls and their
scales additionally enhance this section of the centre console.
Mercedes designers have also revised the control unit for the optional
THERMOTRONIC.
Like the switches in the centre console, the buttons on the transmission
tunnel cladding follow the new design concept. These are now grouped in a
separate array in front of the centre stowage compartment.
The shift/selector lever is now even more pleasing to the touch and
has individual features depending on the design and equipment line. The shift
knob of the ELEGANCE model is covered with leather in the chosen interior
colour, while that in the AVANTGARDE line is distinguished by a striking
combination of black leather and an aluminium cap.

Seats: individual design according to line and even more comfort
More than ever before, the newly developed seats in the C-Class meet
the requirement of Mercedes customers for excellent long-distance comfort. In
addition to further improvements in their technical qualities, they offer a new
upholstery design and new fabric patterns which differ according to line.
- In the CLASSIC line the seats are upholstered in twin leather
upholstery in the colours black, pebble beige or alpaca grey.
- The ELEGANCE line has seats with a new upholstery design: the rear of
the cushions and upper sections of the backrests are vertically structured,
upholstered in twin leather upholstery in the colours black, pebble beige or
alpaca grey. The door lining centre panels are in single-tone. On request
leather upholstery in black, alpaca grey, royal blue or pebble beige is
available for this line.
- For the AVANTGARDE line the Mercedes designers have developed the new
fabric upholstery "Coventry" (in black or alpaca grey), which is combined with
the material ARTICO. This appears on the seat bolsters and door lining centre
panels.
Sports seats with a special backrest contour provide even better lateral
support when taking bends at speed. These are available in the sports package,
optionally in conjunction with leather or Twin Leather (CLASSIC) upholstery.
Sports packages: a full range for outstanding dynamism
When equipped with the sports package or AMG sports package
(optional extras) the C-Class Saloon and Estate exhibit their sporty, agile
character even more clearly. The packages are available for all engine variants

Estate
Estate with an agile nature
- Redesigned front end emphasises the dynamic character even more
- Stylistic details upgrade the interior in form and function
- Wide range of equipment offers great scope for individuality
The C-Class Estate has been part of the Mercedes-Benz car model range since
2001, with more than 189,000 units sold to date. Approx. every fifth C-Class
buyer decides in favour of this youthful, compact estate, which has gained many
new customers for Mercedes-Benz with a capture rate of around 40 percent.
Emotive appeal and utility value; dynamism and variability; elegance and
space; driving pleasure and practicality – in the C-Class Estate seemingly
contradictory aims are reconciled into a harmonious overall concept. The body
design visualises all the attributes of this automobile: it is modern and
progressive, dynamic and innovative, and at the same time practical, versatile
and capable. In other words: the Estate is more than just an estate car, it is a
powerful, multifunctional automobile in a young model generation which has the
typical family characteristics of the C-Class despite its distinctive position.
No wonder, for the Saloon and Estate were developed in parallel. While the
front end of both variants is characterised by sporty, elegant lines, the Estate
particularly exhibits its dynamism by means of the long, strikingly formed roof,
which has a pronounced downward sweep to the rear and ends in the heavily
slanted rear roof pillars. A discreet spoiler is integrated into the upper
section of the large tailgate, contributing to the exemplary aerodynamics and
handling stability. In this way the Estate underlines its distinctiveness
without sacrificing the dynamism of the Saloon.
Body design: wider, more muscular and up-to-date
The formal and conceptual affinity between the two body variants has made it
possible to transfer the majority of the facelifting measures for the Saloon to
the Estate in unmodified form, thereby achieving the same emphases in the
Estate. Dynamism, comfort and value enhancement are the order of the day.
As before, the Saloon and Estate speak the same formal language when viewed
from the front. In conjunction with the wider tyres (205/55 R 16 instead
of the previous 195/65 R 15), which are now on 16-inch wheels (previously
15-inch) with a smaller rim offset, and a twelve-millimetre wider front track,
the redesigned front bumper ensures a more beefy appearance for the
Estate model. This is assisted by the modified radiator grille, which now
has three instead of four transverse slats for a wider, more powerful look. The
elegance of the Estate is particularly characterised by the striking twin
headlamps, whose up-to-the-minute, clear lenses contribute additional
brilliance to the front-end design. The oval fog lamps, which are responsible
for the newly developed cornering light function available with bi-xenon
headlamps (optional), as well as the side indicator repeaters, also feature
clear lenses.
When viewed from the side, the C-Class Estate cuts a sporty and elegant
figure by virtue of the curved shoulder-line at waistline level and the sweeping
line of the long roof. In the ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE lines this formal
expression receives even more emphasis by virtue of a two-piece waistline
trim strip. This has a haematite-coloured upper section and a lower chrome
strip, which discreetly but effectively enhances the appearance.
In the CLASSIC line the waistline trim strip is painted in haematite
(previously black), likewise ensuring a higher value impression.
The muscular side skirts of the AVANTGARDE line now strike a sporty
note in all the design and equipment lines, and harmonise with the spoiler-like
contours of the rear bumper likewise adopted from the AVANTGARDE line.
To protect the rear area and luggage compartment from prying eyes, and reduce
interior temperatures during the summer months, the C-Class Estate is available
with dark-tinted rear side windows and a dark-tinted rear window.
Mercedes customers are able to order this new option for all lines.
With their mirror-polished reflectors the rear lights of the Estate
correspond to the new lighting design of the Saloon, however a division into
three sections distinguishes them from the sister model.
Wheels and tyres: larger, more attractive and sporty
In the ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE lines the C-Class Estate is fitted with newly
designed light-alloy wheels as standard, the AVANTGARDE line showing its
special character with respect to design and tyre size:
- ELEGANCE: Wheels in a seven-hole design, 7J x 16; tyres 205/55 R 16
- AVANTGARDE: Wheels in a five-spoke design, front 7J x 16 and rear 8J
x 16; tyres 205/55 R 16 at the front and 225/50 R16 at the rear.
The alloy wheels of the CLASSIC line have also been redesigned.
17-inch wheels are available on request for all the lines.
Exterior: the major facelifting measures for the Estate
- Redesigned front bumper with enlarged lower air intake
- ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE: bumpers with chrome strips
- New radiator grille with three transverse slats
- ELEGANCE: slats in grey with chrome strips
- AVANTGARDE: slats in black with chrome strips

- AVANTGARDE: mixed tyres, front 205/55 R 16, rear 225/50 R 16
- Dark-tinted rear side windows and rear window (optional)
- Sporty rear bumper for all lines
- ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE: with chrome strips
- High-brilliance rear lights
Interior: more attractive, valuable and comfortable
Thanks to its variable interior, the C-Class Estate is the ideal companion
for people with an active lifestyle who have varying requirements for the
transport capacity of their car for professional or personal reasons. Depending
on the position of the multifunctional rear seat unit, the compact Estate
provides a loading capacity from 470 to 1384 litres according to the VDA
measuring method. A removable shopping crate accommodated in a compartment
beneath the luggage compartment floor is standard equipment, as is the
easy-to-use luggage compartment cover with an integral safety net.
For the cockpit, dashboard, centre console and seats the objective for the
facelift was the same as for the Saloon: value enhancement to the last detail.
This is particularly reflected by the newly developed instrument
cluster in the style of high-quality chronometers. Four dial instruments
with white illumination inform the driver precisely about the coolant
temperature, speed, engine speed and fuel level. Chrome surrounds on each
instrument additionally enhance the appearance. Mercedes engineers have divided
the central display into two and positioned it vertically between the
speedometer and rev counter. It is connected to the standard multifunction
steering wheel by a data link and makes numerous individual adjustments as well
as access to a wide range of additional information possible.
The lower half of the dashboard forms a transition to the gently curved
centre console, which makes an even higher-quality impression than before
with redesigned controls and fine materials. Here the Mercedes designers have
given close attention to every detail and made careful improvements. Special
care was taken over the switches in the upper section of the centre
console, which are in a completely new design. They are now flush with the
surface and framed by high-quality trim. Eight switches (depending on the level
of appointments) on each side form a control array, separated by the prominent
red button for the hazard warning system and the indicator lamp for the
automatic child seat recognition system.
Depending on the design and equipment line, the decorative trim is of
exotic wood (CLASSIC and ELEGANCE) or structured aluminium (AVANTGARDE). On
request decorative trim in fine bird’s-eye maple is also available for the
AVANTGARDE line. The switches on the tunnel cladding also correspond to the new
switch design in the C-Class. They are now located in an area behind the shift
lever.
Two chrome strips stylishly frame the radio, which completely occupies
the middle section of the centre console. There is a choice of two
latest-generation units, whose pushbuttons and rotary controls harmonise
perfectly with the design of the other controls.
The standard automatic climate control THERMATIC and high-comfort
automatic climate control THERMOTRONIC (optional equipment) also feature new,
attractive controls with user-friendly, chrome-trimmed adjustment wheels.
The aesthetic and ergonomic design concept of the C-Class is also reflected
in the newly developed shift/selector lever, which is now even more
pleasant to the touch and makes gear changes even easier. The lever has
individual features depending on the character of the relevant design and
equipment line. The shift knob of the ELEGANCE model is covered with leather in
the chosen interior colour, while that in the AVANTGARDE line is distinguished
by a striking combination of black leather and an aluminium cap.
Seats: more comfortable, up-to-date and individual
The seats have now also become characteristic features for the separate
design and equipment lines. Fabric patterns, colours and upholstery designs
differentiate the three lines in the C-Class Estate:
This appears on the seat bolsters and door lining centre
panels.
Mercedes-Benz has made technical improvements to the seats for the driver and
front passenger, while also improving the level of comfort.
In conjunction with the sports packages, sports seats are also available
whose backrest contours provide even better lateral support when taking bends at
speed. These may be ordered in conjunction with leather or Twin Leather
(Classic) upholstery.

Sports Coupé
Even more youthful, attractive and sporty
- Design: front end with decidedly dynamic lines
- Interior: cockpit with a new steering wheel and high-quality instruments
- Equipment: automatic climate control as standard
- Sports packages: EVOLUTION models even more individual
In introducing the Sports Coupé, a new, distinctive model variant in the
C-Class in 2001, Mercedes-Benz met the wishes of younger, active people who are
looking for a car which offers a distinctive driving experience and exemplary
handling dynamics. The success of this attractive two-door coupé confirms this
model concept: to date more than 187,000 male and female drivers have decided in
favour of the C-Class Sports Coupé. The majority are new Mercedes customers, as
this model enjoys an impressively high capture rate.
Technically the Sports Coupé is based on the Saloon and therefore offers all
the pathfinding innovations of the C-Class. In stylistic and conceptual terms
the Sports Coupé goes its own way, however, and has established itself in the
C-Class model family as an energetic "youngster" with a special emphasis on
dynamism and design. The compact dimensions of the body, which is approx. 18
centimetres shorter than that of the Saloon, as well as muscular proportions
characterise the sporty and dynamic appearance. Likewise the typical slatted
radiator grille with the central Mercedes star and the striking ellipses of the
headlamps clearly mark this two-door model out as a member of the Mercedes Coupé
club.
Three four-cylinder engines –and a V6 power the Sports Coupé. The output
range extends from 105 kW to 160 kW.
For drivers with particularly sporty inclinations Mercedes-Benz has developed
the EVOLUTION sports package specifically for the C-Class Sports Coupé. This
includes 17-inch light-alloy wheels, wide-base tyres, a reconfigured, lowered
sports suspension, a leather-covered sports steering wheel and other
high-quality accessories with which the two-door model displays its sporty
attributes particularly impressively. The EVOLUTION AMG sports package includes
additional body and suspension components made by Mercedes-AMG.
Front end: new bumper, wider track and high-brilliance headlamps
As a result of the model facelift the C-Class Sports Coupé exhibits even more
youthfulness and dynamism from spring 2004. The front bumper is one
contributor to this: with a larger lower air intake and its new slatted
structure (previously a mesh) it accentuates the muscular appearance even more
than before. The wider track (1505 instead of the previous 1465 millimetres)
likewise underlines the new, energy-laden front-end view of the Sports Coupé.
Mercedes designers have slightly modified the typical coupé radiator
grille, increasing the visual prominence of the transverse slats by angling
them more obliquely. Models equipped with the sports package EVOLUTION/EVOLUTION
AMG have a further special feature: in this case the slats in the radiator
grille are painted in brilliant silver and perforated.
Compared to the Saloon, the Sports Coupé has always distinguished itself by
an individual interpretation of the twin-headlamp look, in which the ellipses of
the main and dipped headlamps are more clearly delineated. From spring 2004 the
headlamps also feature clear lenses for even greater brilliance. The
designers have also transferred this theme to the side indicators in the
exterior mirror housings and the standard fog lamps, which also act as
cornering lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps.
Side view: redesigned wheels, wide-base tyres and an individual chrome
package
The side design of the elegant Coupé body remains unchanged, however it is
made even more attractive by newly designed light-alloy wheels.
Mercedes-Benz equips the C 180 KOMPRESSOR, C 200 KOMPRESSOR and C 230 KOMPRESSOR
with light-alloy wheels (7J x 16) in a five-spoke design as standard. The C 320
Evolution sports 17-inch alloy wheels.
The sports packages EVOLUTION and EVOLUTION AMG also include light-alloy
wheels in a seven or five-spoke design, with tyres of different sizes at the
front and rear: 225/45 R 17 at the front, 245/ 40 R 17 at the rear.
Mercedes-Benz has developed a new chrome package for customers who
wish to give their Sports Coupé a special, individual look. This is available on
request and enhances the bumpers, waistline trim strips and door handles with
chrome inserts.
As in the Saloon and Estate models, the rear lights of the Sports
Coupé are in the new high-brilliance design.

Interior: high value impression, superb ergonomics and new technology
Sportiness and variability were the primary consideration for the interior
concept. Seats with raised side bolsters, decorative trim of structured
aluminium and a three-spoke steering wheel reflect the sporty character of the
Coupé, which also exhibits the qualities of a small estate car in terms of
loading capacity. Thanks to an asymmetrically divided and completely foldable
rear seat unit the boot and rear section can be variably configured, providing a
luggage capacity of between 310 and 1100 litres according to the VDA measuring
method.
With the aim of further improving the value impression and comfort of the
interior, the Mercedes designers have revised the dashboard, centre console,
controls and seats.
The centrepiece of the new cockpit design is the well-proportioned
three-spoke steering wheel, which is highlighted by silver-coloured
buttons with which the driver is able to operate the telephone, radio and
central display. As part of the EVOLUTION sports packages the steering wheel is
covered with fine leather, also featuring thumbrests. Other new features are the
optional steering-wheel buttons for the five-speed automatic
transmission, which enable sporty gearshifts to be executed.
The redesigned instrument cluster is a further highlight in the
cockpit of the Sports Coupé. Four dial instruments with white illumination and
discreet chrome surrounds, black dials, white needles and clear markings reflect
the design of high-quality chronometers, immediately conveying the sophisticated
technology and high precision of the instruments. The speedometer and rev
counter take the form of two large dial instruments, each of them flanked by two
smaller displays showing the coolant temperature (left) and fuel level (right).
The indicator lamps are distributed over the dials of the speedometer and rev
counter, but only appear when starting the engine or in the event of a fault.
One addition is the green indicator lamp in the speedometer, which indicates to
the driver whether he has switched on the vehicle lights.
The central display, which is connected to the standard multifunction
steering wheel by a data link and makes numerous individual adjustments as well
as access to a wide range of additional information possible, is divided into
two sections and located vertically between the speedometer and rev counter.
The instrument cluster is even more striking in the EVOLUTION models
of the Sports Coupé. Here the chrome surrounds of the dial instruments contrast
even more strongly with the dials; they are slightly more prominent and slanted
at the bottom, creating a visually attractive impression of depth.
Centre console: new switches, high-quality trim and attractive
controls
Redesigned adjustment wheels for the air vents, ergonomically perfected
switches, high-quality trim and an attractively formed control unit for the
standard THERMATIC automatic climate control characterise the new design of the
centre console. The switches in the upper area of the centre console lie
flush in a panel of structured aluminium and form two arrays, whose pushbuttons
and rotary controls harmonise with the design of the vehicle controls.
A chrome strip separates the lower area from the centre console. This is
where the likewise newly designed control unit for the standard THERMATIC
system with its attractive, ergonomic rotary controls for the fan speed,
temperature and air distribution attracts attention. Discreet chrome surrounds
additionally enhance the appearance of this THERMATIC operating console. The
designers have also revised the control unit for the optional THERMOTRONIC
system.
In Sports Coupés equipped with the EVOLUTION/EVOLUTION AMG package a special
aluminium trim panel embellishes the centre console: the surface of this trim is
more finely structured than that of the basic version, and also slightly
darkened to emphasise the sporty, hi-tech character of the interior. This image
is also complemented by other striking features in the sports packages, for
example the aluminium-look pedal cluster and the redesigned, silver-coloured
shift lever. The EVOLUTION models are equipped with the sporty DIRECT CONTROL
gearshift (if ordered with a manual) and a shorter shift travel as
standard.
The sporty seats of the Sports Coupé feature new fabric upholstery
available in black or alpaca grey. The door lining centre panels and rear side
walls are in single-tone fabric which harmonises with the chosen upholstery
colour. For models with the EVOLUTION and EVOLUTION AMG sports packages
Mercedes-Benz offers a tasteful, two-tone interior on request and at no extra
cost. In this case the black side bolsters of the seats are covered with the new
leather-like material ARTICO, while the cushion and backrest surfaces are in
alpaca grey.

Technology
Dynamism as standard
- DIRECT CONTROL: reconfigured suspension, steering and transmission
- Cornering light function: more safety on junctions and tight bends
- Paintwork: higher sheen and improved scratch resistance thanks to
nano-particle technology
- New generation audio systems
Since its introduction in spring 2000 the C-Class has been the acknowledged
technological leader in this market segment. With more than 20 innovations which
were previously only available in the luxury Mercedes models, the C-Class has
set the standard in terms of safety, environmental compatibility and
long-distance comfort. At the same time this top-class technology provides the
ideal conditions for sporty agility and dynamic driving pleasure.
The new-generation C-Class beats the standards set four years ago in every
respect, with particularly striking improvements in handling dynamics.
This is the result of an extensive range of measures known as DIRECT
CONTROL, which involves further technical development of the axles, steering
and six-speed manual transmission. These measures combine to produce even more
agile handling without compromising the ride comfort typical of a Mercedes.
DIRECT CONTROL is standard equipment in all the C-Class model variants, and can
be supplemented with other systems for even more sporty performance on request.
By improving the elasto-kinematics at the front and rear axles
Mercedes-Benz has achieved practically neutral handling characteristics: the
three-link front axle now has new radius rod bearings with a 22 percent softer
setting for a further improvement in ride comfort; in the multi-link independent
rear suspension the configuration of the spring link bearings has been modified.
In conjunction with an approx. seven percent more direct steering ratio, this
new suspension configuration ensures more responsive and precise steering as
well as improved roadholding on bends. A high level of handling safety continues
to be a major characteristic of the C-Class.
A stiffer configuration of the springs and shock absorbers is provided by the
sports suspension, which is available on request for all the C-Class
models. In this case the suspension is lowered by 15 millimetres at both front
and rear versus the standard vehicle; in the Sports Coupé it is lowered by 15 mm
at the front and five mm at the rear.
Sporty and safe: wide-base tyres
In the CLASSIC and ELEGANCE lines, as well as the Sports Coupé, the standard
tyre size for the C-Class is 205/55 R 16, with size 7J x 16 wheels. The
tyres are therefore larger and wider than before, likewise emphasising the even
more dynamic character of the new C-Class generation. In the AVANTGARDE line the
Saloon and Estate are fitted with 205/55 R 16 tyres at the front and even wider
225/50 R 16 tyres at the rear. The ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE lines are equipped
with light-alloy wheels as standard.
Precise and comfortable: new gearshift control for the six-speed
transmission
The standard DIRECT CONTROL package also includes a further development of
the gearshift control for the six-speed transmission. This has resulted
in considerable improvements, especially in gearshift comfort and precision. In
contrast to the previous technology, in which the longitudinal and transverse
movements of the shift lever were separately relayed to the transmission, a
single shift rod now transfers both movements at once. This eliminates the need
for the previous complicated linkages and has a positive practical effect in
terms of more rapid and smooth gear changes.
Mercedes customers who choose the five-speed automatic transmission in
preference to the manual transmission are now also able to execute more sporty
gear shifts. This is made possible by the optionally available steering-wheel
buttons with an additional, manual shift programme.
High torque and good fuel economy: CDI engine with higher output
The output of the direct-injection diesel engine in the C 220 CDI has
increased from the previous 105 kW to 110 kW, giving this C-Class Saloon a
maximum speed of 224 km/h. The acceleration time from zero to 100 km/h is
reduced by 0.2 seconds to 10.1 seconds. With an exemplary NEDC combined fuel
consumption of just 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres, the C 220 CDI is able to
cover more than 1000 kilometres on one tank of fuel.
The four-cylinder unit in the C 220 CDI features second-generation
common-rail technology which provides significant progress in terms of output,
torque, fuel consumption and noise comfort.
This 110 kW diesel engine is likewise equipped with two balancer shafts,
which counter-rotate at twice the crankshaft speed. In this way they compensate
the inherent inertia forces which occur as a result of piston movement and can
lead to irritating vibrations. By considerably reducing noise emissions and
vibrations, this technology produces a noticeable improvement in ride comfort.

Powerful wide-angle illumination: cornering light function in the fog
lamps
From spring 2004 the C-Class is offering a further technical innovation in
the area of driving safety: a newly developed cornering light function
reduces the risk of accidents in the dark and in inclement weather. This feature
is optionally available in conjunction with the powerful bi-xenon headlamps.
Thanks to this new lighting technology, which combines each fog lamp and
cornering light in a single housing, cyclists, pedestrians and other road users
are more clearly visible when negotiating bends, and visibility even on tight
bends is improved when driving slowly.
If the cornering lights are activated, they automatically switch on up to a
maximum speed of 40 km/h as soon as the driver operates the indicators or moves
the steering wheel to turn the front wheels. The cornering lights illuminate the
area to the side of the vehicle covering an angle of up to 65 degrees, with a
range of approx. 30 metres. In this way they shed light on areas of the road and
pavement which remain obscured with conventional headlamp technology.
When turning right or taking a right-hand bend the cornering light on the
right lights up, and that on the left when turning left or taking a left-hand
bend.
The electronic control unit does not switch the cornering lights on and off
abruptly, but gradually increases and dims the light intensity – and more
rapidly when switching on than when switching off. This gives the driver's eyes
time to adjust to the changing light conditions.
These cornering lights are very intelligently designed. They consist of a
housing with a reflector and an H7 bulb. With this clever arrangement
Mercedes-Benz combines two lighting functions in a single housing: the halogen
bulb of the cornering light serves as a fog lamp, also ensuring better road
illumination in this capacity.
Shinier and more scratch-resistant: new paint finish as standard
In addition to safety, environmental compatibility and comfort, one of the
outstanding attributes of the C-Class is long-term quality. With an innovative,
more scratch-resistant paint based on the latest nano-technology, Mercedes-Benz
is once again setting standards in this area.
The newly developed clearcoat contains microscopically small ceramic
particles. It hardens in the paintshop oven and forms a very dense network
structure which provides much more effective scratch-resistance, for example
when the car is washed in mechanical car wash systems. These so-called
nano-particles produce a three-fold increase in scratch-resistance and ensure a
lasting and visible improvement in the sheen of the paint finish. Following
extreme tests in a car wash, Mercedes engineers measured an approx. 40 percent
higher sheen than for conventional clearcoats. In addition the newly developed
paint system corresponds to the high Mercedes standard in terms of protection
against chemical and environmental influences.
The new paint with nano-particles is used for both standard and metallic
paint finishes, and is standard equipment in the C-Class from spring 2004.
Mercedes-Benz is the world's first automobile manufacturer to offer this more
scratch-resistant paint. It provides an example of the great future potential of
nano-technology, with which scientists are able to penetrate and change the
atomic structure of materials. In future it will also be possible to lend new,
tailor-made characteristics to materials in other areas of automobile
development.
Versatile performance: new car radios with numerous additional
functions
The attractively designed centre console of the C-Class will accommodate a
new generation of audio units. These not only harmonise visually with the
interior design, but also meet the high Mercedes standard in technical terms.
The following systems are available as optional equipment:
- Audio 20 CD with VHF, MW, LW and SW reception, RDS function, integral
CD player, separate treble and bass adjustment, telephone keypad and automatic
volume control according to vehicle speed.
- COMAND APS with the same features as Audio 20 CD plus integral
DVD navigation, CD player, colour display (6.5") in TFT technology (image format
16 : 9), four 50-watt amplifiers and e-mail/SMS functions. The navigation system
operates Australia-wide using a DVD and shows the route in the form of a colour
map (Standard on C 320 and C 55 AMG)
These car radios are linked to the standard multifunction steering wheel and
the central display in the instrument cluster. This enables the driver e.g. to
adjust the volume by pressing a button on the steering wheel, search for a radio
station or select the next track on a CD.
Mercedes-Benz has perfected musical enjoyment en route with a newly developed
sound system providing surround sound for every seat. This is available
as optional equipment and can be combined with Audio 20 or COMAND APS. The
amplifier has eight output stages with a total output of 320 watts. A microphone
monitors the noise level in the interior for automatic adjustment of both tone
and volume. Two special loudspeakers in the rear provide the surround-sound
effect.
Innovative and convenient: voice control also for the navigation
system
The driver is able to operate the majority of the audio functions, the car
telephone and the navigation system in the C-Class by means of the
LINGUATRONIC voice control system. This innovative system works together
with the COMAND APS unit. Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer in this vehicle
class to offer voice control for the navigation system.
The system is activated by a stalk on the steering column. A few spoken
commands by the driver cause the system to find or store a different radio
station automatically, skip to the next track on a CD or programme a new
destination into the navigation system.
With this technology Mercedes-Benz has made a further important contribution
to road safety, as drivers no longer need to take their hands from the steering
wheel to operate the car telephone or audio equipment. Accordingly LINGUATRONIC
relieves the driver of effort, enabling him to concentrate fully on the traffic
situation, and offers significantly more comfort as well. Only the sound and
volume cannot be adjusted by voice control.
