Toyota has recorded its best-ever sales for the month of August, thanks to
booming sales of its ever-popular Corolla and Echo models.
A total of 17,920 Toyotas were sold last month – up 1559 on the previous
record, set last year.
Toyota sold a record 4783 Corollas in August – its second-best monthly result
on record after the 5221 sold in June.
Echo sold 1455 to record its second best August result – just 34 units behind
the record set in 2003.
Year-to-date Corolla sales are now 4282 ahead of 2004’s record sales.
“The news about Corolla’s combination of interior space, performance and fuel
economy has clearly reached consumers and they are responding to the value for
money those attributes represent,” said Toyota Australia’s executive director of
sales and marketing, David Buttner.
Mr Buttner said concerns about fuel prices are clearly shaping the motor
vehicle market at present.
Year-to-date Camry four-cylinder has sold 16,174 – 143 ahead of last year’s
sales.
Another Toyota model clearly benefiting from consumer focus on fuel economy
is petrol-electric hybrid Prius.
Its August sales of 133 were a record for the month and year to date Prius is
now running 262 or 40.2 per cent ahead of 2004.
“We think the growth in buyer interest in Prius is the beginning of a
significant trend and supports Toyota’s long-term commitment to establishing
hybrid technology,” said Mr Buttner.
Better supplies of new-generation HiLux helped it to record sales in August.
HiLux 4x4 was Australia’s most popular four-wheel-drive pick-up/cab chassis –
its 1593 sales 492 ahead of the record for the month set last year.
HiLux 4x2 also enjoyed its best-ever August performance with 1361 sales – 208
up on August 2004.
“With supply issues sorted, we’re now confident that by year’s end HiLux will
outsell its 2004 total,” said Mr Buttner.
