Improvements across the New 307 Range
Exterior style
The 307 benefits from the new Peugeot family appearance and combines the
architecture acclaimed as innovative when it won the European Car of the Year
title in 2002. The style of the New 307 has progressively evolved, now
expressing a personality that is more dynamic and powerful while enhancing its
elegance and appeal.
The new bumper design extends the overall length by 10mm. Changes are mainly
at the front providing all models in the 307 line-up with a more Sporty
character. The appearance is consistent with latest design styles presented by
Peugeot.
The new front design of the New 307 has a single air intake and surround,
with front fog lights in two chrome housings and the Peugeot badge in its centre
above. The new front panel is integrated into a new, shorter aluminium bonnet. At
each side of the single air intake, two over riders protect the bodywork from
minor front impacts.
The new hi-tech larger elliptical headlamps now protrude further into the
composite front wings. They overhang a slightly curved radiator grille featuring
black or chrome horizontal bars that creates a dynamic, sporty appearance.
On hatches and Tourings, the all-red rear lights feature new technology that
creates a modern appearance simulating the effect of Light Emitting Diodes
(LED’s).
A more dynamic interior style
The tall architecture of the 307 creates a bright and spacious passenger
compartment that promises comfort and dynamism due to its layout and trims.
While the New 307 retains all the qualities and virtues of the original,
improvements have been made to enhance style and function as a result of the
following changes: -New instrument panels with chrome instrument surrounds
and graphics on all versions -Aluminium detailing on the centre console is
extended to all versions -New styled heating, air conditioning and radio
controls
Some attributes derived from the 307 CC (Coupé Cabriolet) add a greater
dynamic appeal to Sport versions: sports instrument panel with white dial
backgrounds, red needles, tapered graphics and chrome instrument surrounds and a
sports leather steering wheel with Grey Lion inserts.
Also featured originally on the 307 CC, an innovative and luxurious integral
leather range is available for the Sport hatch models, dressing the fascia
panel, door trims and seats.
Technology aids visibility and safety
The new and attractive hi-tech headlamps present a Sporty look that’s even
more powerful. Extending a further ten or so centimetres along the wings, the
new, smooth glass headlamps present a “chrome” mask that forms the focal point
of three separate lighting functions:
- Main beam and sidelights are housed in the lower part.
- The front indicators occupy the top section.
- The central area is dedicated to the dipped beam, based on entirely new
technologies.
The new elliptical headlamps emit a high-quality beam (20% improved over the
previous lights), superb uniformity and an enlarged area of coverage, qualities
which together ensure greater visibility.
Xenon headlamps which are standard on the 307 ‘Sport’ models (Hatch and CC)
provide a blue-tinged light with an intensity close to that of daylight. They are
accompanied by headlamp wash units and an automatic ride-height sensor that
adjusts the height of the beam according to load and the car’s ride height to
ensure that oncoming vehicles are not dazzled.
In terms of lighting, the New 307 also stands out by its circular fog lights,
which are now offset in the body of the lower front panel and located in a
chromed housing.
New chrome rear lights
The new rear lights, with their ruby red “diode” appearance obtained by a
patented process, are a major new stylistic feature of the rear design. Their
chrome red mask, emphasising the different circular functions, is capped by
smooth glass which looks red as a result of red prisms alternating with small,
transparent areas. The white light is diffracted as a result allowing compliance
with the regulation colours of the direction indicator, reversing light and fog
light functions while conserving the integral ruby appearance.
New side repeaters
The composite front wings follow the example of the Marque’s new vehicles by
incorporating new side repeaters with a “crystal” appearance.
Windscreen wipers now feature “flat” wiper blades and are fitted across the
New 307 range
Since launch, the 307 has featured “butterfly” windscreen wipers that optimise
the cleaned area in relation to the size and curvature of the windscreen. The
307 CC since its launch combined this mechanism with new technology “flat-blade”
windscreen wipers. This technology is available on all New 307 versions.
Consisting of a single metallic blade inserted in a generous strip of rubber,
they are lighter, faster and ensure improved functionality as a result of the
even pressure they exert over the entire contact area.
They are also compact and discreet, combining efficiency, with good looks; to
ensure excellent visibility for the car’s occupants in wet weather. The rear
windscreen wiper is now activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged if
the front windscreen wipers are already working, ensuring better rear visibility
during manoeuvres.
New 2.0-litre 16V 103kW engine
A new 2.0 litre petrol engine, with double overhead camshafts, 16-valves and
a capacity of 1997cm3 (bore 85mm, stroke 88mm) is introduced, fully compliant
with the latest Euro 4 requirements.
Modifications to the engine include a pre-catalyser in the exhaust system
located under the four-into-one exhaust manifold and an under-floor catalytic
converter. This configuration provides a better control of exhaust emissions
during the warm up phase when the engine is started.
The intake camshaft is equipped with VVT (Variable Valve Timing) with an
angular variation of between 0 and 50° in relation to the crankshaft. This
occurs one degree at a time, thereby ensuring optimal filling of the combustion
chambers irrespective of engine speed. This characteristic makes the engine both
flexible and more powerful.
Engine warm up is more precisely controlled via the thermostat and the fitment
of a water/oil heat exchanger, to improve engine warm up, helping reduce levels
of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption.
Maximum power is increased to 103 kW and maximum torque is now 200Nm at
4000rpm (compared to 100 kW and 190Nm in the previous 2.0-litre engine). The
torque available at 2500rpm is 184Nm (92% of the maximum value) which represents
an increase of 5% compared to the EW10J4 engine.
Fuel consumption has also been reduced by between 3 and 5.5% according to
gearbox and body style, helping to reduce CO2 emissions. This engine
is available in all models with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed automatic
gearbox with a Porsche Tiptronic Control System.
Enhanced Safety
The structure of the 307 is meticulously designed to provide effective
protection for its occupants and also obtain good torsional rigidity, thereby
permitting excellent road-holding ability.
Since its launch, 307 (except CC) has offered as standard, six air bags,
including two curtain air bags, combined with pre-tensioning front and rear
outer seat belts with force limiters. A retractable steering column is also
fitted.
The New 307 optimises passive safety still further
- The dual-volume, twin-generator front air bags now have modified control
vents that further enhance their performance. A new deployment system for the
side air bags ensures enhanced occupant chest protection.
- All 307 body styles benefit from a fasten seat belt alarm with buzzer for the
front passenger seat belt, in addition to that of the driver. For this purpose,
a presence detection system is installed in the passenger seat.
- The front seats are equipped with new active head restraints with a
different profile ensuring better protection for the back of the head. These have
new modified locating bars and notched locking mechanisms to ensure they remain
- correctly deployed in the event of rear impact.
New: tyre-pressure monitors
The New 307 ‘Sport’ models now feature a “direct” under-inflation detection
system as standard.
Connected to sensors installed in the rim, the system monitors pressure and
temperature variations inside the tyres against reference values and has two
alarm levels - under-inflation and puncture. The alarm appears in the form of a
“service” or “stop” indicator depending on circumstances and is accompanied by a
message in the multifunction display indicating which wheel is affected.
The New 307 - Enhanced comfort
In the restyled centre console a number of new features appear with
attractive, variable lighting:
- For improved comfort inside the car, a new dual-zone air conditioning system
allows separate right and left temperature regulation. Its externally controlled
compressor takes into account ambient temperature, compares it to the requested
temperature and produces just the right amount of cold or hot air where
necessary. Previously the system either reduced the air temperature or reheated
it to reach the required temperature. This new method also helps reduce the
vehicle’s average fuel consumption, by reducing the operating time of the
compressor. The heater control panel with its modern appearance benefits from
lighting that highlights the new functions to optimal effect. It offers a new
control logic and optimised ergonomics.
- A new RD4 mono-CD car radio is fitted to the New 307. It benefits from a new
front panel design, with grey pre-select buttons and controls, complete with
orange backlighting, and offers new functions:
- 4 x 15W output
- Radio text system displays the artist’s name and song title when tuned to
RDS stations offering this service Rotary on and off control which also adjusts
the volume
- DSP system (Digital Sound Processor) for enhanced sound reproduction
- Menu control to enter the set-up menu
- ‘List’ mode to select FM stations from an alphabetical list and indicate
available stations
Improved parking assistance
The parking assistance system, when specified, offers enhanced features: the
buzzer can now be heard through the vehicle’s speakers instead of via a separate
unit. The proximity of the object is easier to judge according to whether the
buzzer is heard in the left or right speaker. At the same time, a diagram
appears in the multifunction display indicating the location and the remaining
distance from the object.
Auto-rear wipers (Hatch and Touring models)
The rear windscreen wiper is activated automatically when reverse gear is
engaged if the front windscreen wipers are already working, ensuring better rear
visibility during manoeuvres.
A personalisation menu for some equipment
The introduction of a new personalisation menu enables the user to set
activation parameters for certain functions, according to preference or to take
account of temporary conditions (fitments of trailer or bike carrier for
example). This menu controls the automatic activation of the headlamps, switches
off the automatic activation of the rear windscreen wiper, can also switch off
the parking assistance and follow-me-home headlamp function, or adjust its
operation time depending on the multi¬-function display fitted.
New HF remote locking / un-locking controls
A new rectangular high frequency (HF) plip remote control with a chrome
Peugeot logo and a folding key is introduced.
A two-button plip is used on all but CC versions: the first button is used for
locking (as well as associated functions such as raising the windows or locating
the car), the second for unlocking.
A three-button plip is used specifically for the 307 CC and allows the user,
by means of the central button, to unlock and half-open the boot lid.
Platform and architecture
The New 307 retains the tall architecture of the 307, a truly distinctive
feature at the time of its launch offering a blend of capacity and compactness,
with a high-level specification in terms of interior space and comfort.
The new-style front generates an overhang increased by 10 mm and takes the
length of the hatchback to 4.21 m. The width remains unchanged (1.73 m), as does
the generous height of 1.51 m.
The 307 platform is still available in two wheelbase versions: 2.61 m for the
hatch and the CC and 2.71 m for the Touring.
The platform is distinguished by its excellent rigidity, ensuring optimal
performance of mechanical assemblies and the suspension, but also for good
acoustic damping.
For example, torsional deformation is only 0.80 mrd under a torque of 100
daN.m applied to the axles.
Its ability to absorb high-speed impact helps to protect the occupants, while
a range of equipment limits the effect of collision with a pedestrian or other
urban type incidents (type 15 km/h).
Structure and safety
The principle of the steel monobloc structure is used again, with an engine
compartment that extends into the under body of the passenger compartment.
This engine compartment consists of the bulkhead and the two chassis legs,
connected at the front by a new aluminium bumper bar with a distinct curvature
that matches the new design of the front.
The bumper impact absorbers can absorb up to 6000 Joules before transmitting
energy to the chassis legs, which can resist up to 9 tonnes.
Helped by the mechanical sub-frame, the chassis legs are the focus of the
absorption strategy and determine the sequence that forces, are transmitted
along them in pre-established “paths” towards specially strengthened zones,
namely the bulkhead, the under body and the sides of the body, which are
connected by numerous cross members.
To resist side impact, the sides of the body are fully sectioned and the B/C
post is lined with a high-strength steel reinforcement along its entire length.
Similarly, numerous cross members span the exterior side members of the floor and
the upper part of the passenger compartment. Lastly, each door incorporates two
longitudinal strengtheners.
The weight specification imposed the use of materials lighter than steel. For
example, the bonnet is manufactured from aluminium; the wings are made of a
composite material, while plastic has been used for the front grille, bumpers
and headlamps.
The new 307: Engines
Petrol engines The 2.0 16V 103 kW / EW10A engine
This is a development of the current 4-cylinder EW10J4 engine, with double
overhead camshafts, 16-valves and a capacity of 1997 cm3 (bore 85 mm, stroke 88
mm).
The compact light-alloy engine block has cast-iron liners inserted during
manufacture. The main crankshaft bearing supports in the engine cylinder block
are mated to a separate light-alloy support casing, which helps to strengthen
the assembly and significantly reduce vibrations. The valve timing is controlled
by a toothed belt which directly drives the timing gears of each of the
camshaft.
The use of an electronic control unit (ECU) controlled electrical throttle
housing enhances drivability and allows dialogue with the electronic stability
programme (ESP) system.
Modifications to the engine include the following:
- The exhaust system now incorporates a pre-catalyser located under the
four-into-one exhaust manifold and an under-floor catalytic converter. This
configuration provides a better control of exhaust emissions during the warm up
phase when the engine is started.
- The intake camshaft is equipped with a variable valve timing system (VVT*)
with an angular variation of between 0 and 50° in relation to the
crankshaft. This occurs one degree at a time, thereby ensuring optimal filling of
the combustion chambers irrespective of engine speed. This characteristic makes
the engine both flexible and more powerful.
- Engine warm up is more precisely controlled via the thermostat and the
fitment of a water/oil heat exchanger, to improve engine warm up, helps reduce
levels of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption.
* Variable Valve Timing
- The alternator controls the battery voltage according to engine load,
thereby helping to reduce fuel consumption.
- The idle speed is reduced.
- Modified geometry of the camshaft timing gears reduces operating noise
levels.
- Fitment of a Magneti-Marelli 6LP sequential fuel injection and Valeo BBC 1.4
monostatic ignition system.
Largely due to these various developments, maximum power is increased to 103
kW against 100 kW at 6000 rpm previously and, above all, maximum torque is now
200 Nm at 4000 rpm compared to 190 Nm at 4100 rpm previously. The torque
available at 2500 rpm is 184 Nm, or 92 % of the maximum value, which represents
an increase of 5 % compared to the EW10J4.
This enhanced performance gives the New 307 fitted with this engine, greater
flexibility at low engine speeds to ensure better drivability, but also a
reduction in operating noise.
Fuel consumption has also been reduced by between 3 and 5.5 % according to
gearbox and body style, helping to reduce CO2 emissions. This engine is available
in the Hatch,Touring and CC models.
The 2.0 litre 16V 130 kW / EW10 J4S engine
The EW10 J4S petrol engine derives from the EW10A version, but differs
essentially in the design of the cylinder head, intake system, exhaust and
engine management. It is the most powerful 4-cylinder engine in the family of EW
engines.
With a capacity of 1997 cm3, due to a bore of 85 mm and a stroke of 88 mm,
this engine develops a maximum power of 130 kW at 7000 rpm and a maximum torque
of 202 Nm at 4750 rpm.
The cylinder head with four valves per cylinder is of the “cross flow” type
and is manufactured from aluminium. It has forked intake ports with an optimised
design to improve fuel/air mixing. It also incorporates inverted “V” shaped
combustion chambers and optimised cooling of each cylinder.
On the intake camshaft equipped with the VVT* system, variation of angular
timing is controlled by the ECU according to oil temperature, engine load and
engine speed.
The exhaust system comprises of a four-into-one tubular stainless-steel
exhaust manifold.
This engine is available in the 307 ‘Sport’ models – as a 5-door hatchback or
as a CC .
* Variable Valve Timing
Diesel engines
The 1.6 litre HDi 16V 80 kW / DV6TED4 FAP engine
The design of this engine supports the “downsizing” policy of the PSA Peugeot
Citroën group, the aim of which is to reduce the capacities and fuel consumption
of engines while preserving their dynamic performance.
With this in mind, the DV6 TED4 engine with a capacity of 1560 cm3 (bore 75
mm, stroke 88.6 mm), equipped with a front-mounted air/air intercooler, develops
a maximum power of 80 kW at 4000 rpm, and a maximum torque of 240 Nm at 1750
rpm.
In the top three gears, torque can attain 260 Nm at 2000 rpm thanks to the
“over boost”* function, activated when at full engine load between 1500 rpm and
3750 rpm. Maximum torque is then increased temporarily by 8.3 %.
This is an all-aluminium 4-cylinder engine with a meticulously designed
engine block to guarantee reliability, durability and a high level of acoustic
performance. A 16-valve cylinder head with two camshafts and valve operation
controlled by roller cam followers and hydraulic tappets is fitted to the engine.
A low inertia Garrett GT 15 variable-geometry turbocharger with an “over-boost”
function is used to ensure dynamic performance.
It benefits from a second-generation Bosch common rail direct injection
system, with operating pressures varying from 250 bar at idle speed to 1600 bar
at maximum, according to demand calculated by the electronic control unit (ECU)
“software” in relation to the speed and load applied to the engine.
(*) temporary enrichment of the air and fuel mixture
The rail is connected to injectors with a spray head containing six injection
apertures with a diameter of 120 µ.This ensures that a very fine jet is sprayed
directly into the combustion chamber, thereby ensuring good fuel/air mixing and
thereby a reduction in emissions at source. In addition, the sophisticated
Common Rail Injection system ensures maximum performance and efficiency by its
ability to provide up to six different injection phases.
To reduce the quantity of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emitted in exhaust fumes, the
DV6 is equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation device (EGR). Lastly, to
complete the processing of exhaust gases, an oxidation catalyser is located as
close as possible to the turbocharger to benefit from the highest possible
exhaust temperatures. A six-blade water/oil heat exchanger is placed between the
engine block and the “environmentally-friendly” oil filter element and housing.
With this system only the filter element is replaced, to facilitate recycling and
prevent oil spills during servicing.
This engine is available in both the 5-door hatchback and Touring versions.
The 2.0 litre HDi 16V 100 kW / DW10 BTED4 - FAP engine
With a capacity of 1997 cm3 (bore 85 mm, stroke 88 mm), this engine is
equipped with a Garett variable-geometry turbocharger equipped with a controlled
vacuum waste gate and a front-mounted air/air intercooler. It develops a maximum
power of 100 kW at 4000 rpm and a maximum torque of 320 Nm at 2000 rpm.
In the top four gears, torque can increase to 340 Nm at 2000 rpm thanks to
the “over boost”* function, activated when at full engine load between 1500 rpm
and 3200 rpm.
The Common Rail high-pressure direct injection includes an electronically
controlled high-pressure pump which manages up to six different injection
phases. This engine is fitted with a third-generation “Octosquare” particle
emission filter.
(*) temporary enrichment of the air and fuel mixture
The replacement interval is now 180,000 km, a performance made possible by
improvements to the additive and the filter design. The new-generation Eolys
additive, with an improved efficiency that allows a smaller dose to be
administered to the fuel, reduces the quantity of residue stored on the walls of
the filter. The filter core has a new structure in which the Octosquare geometry
and the larger diameter of the filter ducts significantly increase the residue
storage capacity.
This engine is now available in the 5-door hatchback, and remains available
in the Touring model range.

All the New 307 engine options are coupled to a transversely mounted manual
gearbox. The gearbox and final drive ratios are adapted to each engine, according
to torque, power and body style.
The 1.6 litre petrol engines are equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the
1.6 litre HDi and 2.0 litre petrol versions are equipped with a 5-speed BE4
gearbox, while 2.0 litre HDi models are equipped with the 6-speed ML gearbox.
The gearbox gear selection is cable controlled with a hydraulically operated
clutch. The clutch diameter varies according to each engine from 200 to 230 mm.
Automatic gearboxes
The 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre petrol engines can be fitted with an AL4 automatic
gearbox equipped with a “Porsche Tiptronic” sequential control system. This
electronically controlled “auto active” gearbox has four speeds and electronic
control of gear selection and driving mode.
The gearbox has a dual function gear “selector” lever with, on the right-hand
side, a PRND shift gate and on the left, accessible from the “drive” position, a
sequential (Tiptronic) control which offers the driver “active” driving control.
By a forward or backward movement of the “gear lever”, the driver can go “up” or
“down” the gears. The system automatically selects first gear when at a
standstill, at traffic lights for example, and automatically if the maximum safe
engine speed is exceeded a higher gear to protect mechanical parts for safety
reasons. Two pushbuttons allow the selection of a Sport and Snow operating mode.
For greater safety, the auto active gearbox has a “shift lock” function that
requires the foot to be kept on the brake pedal with the engine running before
being able to move the gear lever from the Parking position.
Chassis and Suspension
The New 307 retains the existing chassis dynamics (steering and brake
specifications) that combine to form a large part of the product’s overall
appeal, combining good road handling with ride comfort.
The front axle
The front axle is an inverted McPherson strut design with a linked anti-roll
bar. The front sub-frame is attached at four points under the chassis legs and
front floor. Each wishbone is connected to two flexible mountings rigidly attached
to the sub-frame.The very rigid front section (1500 daN) ensures rigorous guide
accuracy while the rear (75 daN) works mainly as a vibration absorber.
The rear suspension linkage
The rear suspension with collapsible cross member consists of two suspension
arms connected by a cross member and an anti-roll bar, with all four elements
welded together.
The “U” shaped rear steel cross member varies in thickness between 5 and 6 mm
according to version. The anti-roll bar is hollow and positioned inside the rear
cross member and welded to each rear suspension arm.
Steering
The rack and pinion system features power steering generated by an
electro-hydraulic pump unit, which modulates the hydraulic pressure applied to
the rack according to vehicle speed, angular steering wheel speed and the
temperature of the power steering fluid.
In the event of impact, the upper section can retract over a distance of 50
mm and the lower section slides into a sleeve over a distance of 95 mm.
Simultaneously, this lower part of the column can slide on a “ski” mounted on
the pedal bracket support flange, which retracts at the same time in order to
limit steering wheel movements.
Braking
All versions are equipped with additional Bosch 8.0 anti-lock braking (ABS)
with four sensors and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), which guarantees maximum
deceleration in emergency conditions.
Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) controls the pressure between the
front and rear, and, for the rear, between the left and right wheels.
The hazard warning lights are activated automatically in the event of sharp
deceleration (8 metres per second).
The 2.0 HDi, Sport and CC versions are equipped as standard with the Bosch
8.0 electronic stability program (ESP), which features anti-lock braking (ABS)
and traction control (ASR) functions and acts on the engine control and on the
brakes. It also includes a stability control (CDS) which, by means of steering
wheel angle sensors, yaw speed and lateral acceleration sensors, can detect the
start of an under-steer or over-steer condition. When these have been detected,
the ECU orders controlled braking on the wheels and modulation of engine torque;
within the limits of the laws of physics, this will return the car to the
driver’s chosen trajectory.
