Toyota’s new Yaris light car has topped sales figures in its first full month on
sale – selling 1733 units and helping Toyota improve its position atop
Australian new vehicle sales.
According to industry statistician VFACTS, Yaris was the highest-selling
Light car in November, while the Toyota Corolla maintained its stranglehold on
the small car segment with 4002 sales.
Toyota sold a total of 17,849 vehicles during November, which equates to a
market share of 21.4 per cent during the month.
“This is a remarkable start for Yaris,” said David Buttner, Toyota Australia
executive director sales and marketing.
“For Yaris to come out of the blocks in such a competitive segment as Light
cars and be so immediately popular shows that car buyers in this segment are
recognising its inherent sophistication and style.”
Meanwhile, Corolla’s position as Australia’s favourite small car was elevated
further with its November success taking it to 42,831 sales for 2005 to date, an
increase of 18 per cent year-to-date on 2004.
Toyota sold 1922 four-cylinder Camrys, which allowed the car to achieve
segment leadership and a huge market share of 47.2 per cent in the highly
competitive medium vehicle category.
Toyota models in the SUV class recorded 3583 sales for the month, over 25 per
cent market share – again achieving market leadership.
HiAce was the nation’s highest-selling van with 34.5 per cent market share.
This took its tally to 5573 for the year, up 13 per cent on 2004.
The new HiLux continued its strong performance with the 4x4 model, achieving
36.1 per cent market share and 1890 sales – sales of both HiLux models are up
eight per cent to end November on last year.
“Toyota’s position stems from the fact that we have popular cars across a
wide variety of market segments,” said Mr Buttner.
“This year we launched Yaris, new-model HiAce and HiLux, as well as an
updated LandCruiser 100 series wagon – and all of them have been greeted
enthusiastically by customers.
“We anticipate finishing 2005 off strongly, and eagerly await 2006 when
Toyota will launch a raft of exciting new models.”
